Detroit Pit Crew rescued Courage in August of 2016. He had been abandoned in a box with severe injuries including a broken jaw, broken zygomatic arch and massive infection and swelling. It was unknown as to whether he would lose his eye due to the injuries. The fabulous team at Center Line Veterinary Hospital provided emergency medical care, and were able to place drainage tubes in his head, admin
ister IV fluids and antibiotics, and render other necessary emergency care. Due to their quick and fantastic care, Courage's eye was saved, and he began on his road to recovery. Due to the age of the break in his jaw, it was determined that surgery would not be the best course of action. The jaw was allowed to heal naturally under the supervision of the veterinary team, and was able to fuse in an alignment that allows him to eat, drink, and play as a normal puppy would- it just is a bit sore from time to time now. It was also discovered that he had had a fractured femur, as well as damage to his front leg/growth plate. Courage was seen by an orthopedic surgeon in October 2016, and it was decided that the best course of action would be to operate on his front leg to realign the bones from the fractures. His rear leg required an FHO operation - the head of the femur was removed and the end of the femur reshaped to function as the ball in the socket of the hip. The FHO was successful, and our little guy recovered beautifully from that surgery. Unfortunately, the surgery performed on his front leg was successful at first, but due to the growth plate issue, it was not successful in the long range. The leg continued to cause Courage significant pain and prevented him from walking, running, and playing as a typical puppy should. Even with prescription medication, he was still in significant pain throughout each and every day. It was necessary to amputate his leg to provide him with a better quality of life - better mobility and less pain in the long term. His front right leg and scapula were amputated on January 5, 2017. Courage recovered beautifully, and now runs and plays just as a pup his age should! Courage loves everyone he meets - human and animal. He loves to play with his fur-siblings, Gracie and Malcolm, and spends his days chasing toys, playing fetch, wrestling with his fur-sibs, cuddling his humans, and living his best life. Courage loves to go out on the town, and has been known to use his puppy dog eyes to get pets and treats everywhere he goes. Despite his rough start, Courage is one happy, loving, silly, cuddly little guy. He's adapted to everything that life has thrown at him and brings unbelievable fun and joy to his family and friends.
