Trousers worn by C.W. Mitchell, Company F, 7th Alabama Cavalry. Mitchell joined the army in 1863 at 16 years of age. His regiment fought in the Tennessee Campaign, where he was severely wounded in the left leg at Mount Pleasant, Tennessee. His next available record is his parole at Montgomery, dated May 9, 1865.[64] Mitchell’s trousers are the ones worn by him when he was wounded. He did not lose his left leg, but the hospital staff cut away the lower pant leg to treat his wound. He probably received these pants when the regiment was stationed in the Pollard area (close to Mobile) just prior to joining the Army of Tennessee the late summer of 1864, in which case, the pants were probably from one of the department’s depots.

Pictured on the left is Mitchell at a veteran's re-union in the 1920s. Despite his severe wound late in the war, doctors saved his leg, and his life, and he lived to a ripe old age.

Here are some more good depictions of Confederate Cavalry troopers in the Western theater. These troopers would have hailed primarily from Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas.

FIRST SERGEANT, RUCKER’S CAVALRY BRIGADE, JULY 1864
Painting By Don Troiani

By 1864, most jackets produced by Confederate depots in the western theater no longer had the colored trim that indicated branch of service. Though many of these depots continued to supply forage caps, many, if not most, of the troopers preferred hats.

As with most Confederate cavalry, the arms carried by Rucker’s Brigade included a mixed bag of muskets, rifles, carbines, and revolvers, though an inspection report for July 1864 shows that the brigade had no sabers. It was not uncommon for Confederate troopers to arm themselves with two revolvers.

There were many problems with the qualify of saddles produced in Southern arsenals, and Yankee saddles of the McClellan pattern were prized items. A complaint from the ordinance officer of Wheeler’s Cavalry Corps to the Atlanta Arsenal, referring to Confederate-made saddles, stated that “[t]he men in some cases refuse to take them, knowing that in most instances that they will last but a month or so and are certain to cause a sore back in a week or ten days.” The sergeant shown here has reached beyond the normal Confederate supply system and recently acquired a new saddle complements of Uncle Sam, complete with all the equipment of some hapless Union trooper.
