If you’re getting a pup this Christmas season, keep in mind what a huge transition it is for your pup to come from their mother’s den and their littermates to your home.

This big period of adjustment coincides with a fear imprint period, meaning your pup will be more sensitive to new things and experiences and more prone to frights.

Your home is a whole new environment full of unknown smells, noises, objects and experiences and your pup is experiencing so many firsts. Pups can easily develop site aversion so you want to ensure your pup’s new home feels like a place of safety and comfort.

The best thing you can do is make sure you create a calm, relaxed atmosphere, particularly for those first few days. Watch out for loud noises and ensure children are calm and not too noisy around the new pup. Include smells from the pup’s previous den/breeder if possible.

Be wary about:

- Having big crowds of people over for Christmas
- Taking your pup with you to Christmas events that may be crowded or noisy
- Going away from home during the holidays when your pup is still settling in (another big transition may be tough if your pup is very young)

Christmas can be a great time of year to get a pup when you’re off on holiday, just be conscious that you want things to be as calm and settled as possible for your new little one!

It’s getting to that time of the year again. Please keep your pets safe.

Smile, it’s Spring! 🌸✨🐝🌞

Flowers are blooming, bees are buzzing and birds are chirping – it’s a lovely time to be outdoors and enjoy some much needed sunshine with our furry friends, but with the warmer weather comes hidden dangers for our pets!

It’s important to remember to check your pet’s coat for fleas, grass seeds and other objects which may become stuck in their coats and cause problems or discomfort.

Snakes and Your Pets
Did you know we see more snake bites in spring than summer? In our experience, September to December seem to be the worst months for snake bites in dogs and cats. With the temperatures a bit lower compared to late summer, the snakes are a bit more sluggish. This means they don’t get out of your pets way quite as quickly so are more likely to bite in self-defence.
With snake bites, early recognition is important. Rapid treatment will make a huge difference to the speed of recovery and the amount of antivenom required.
For dogs, the “classic” presentation is the dog is outside then collapses suddenly. Within a few minutes the dog seems normal again. THIS IS A CRITICAL WARNING SIGN! A dog that does this has possibly had a lethal dose of venom. Contact your vet immediately for advice, as your dog will start to become severely affected very soon, possibly within a few minutes. Rapid treatment at this point may save your dogs life, and may mean less antivenom is needed, so could also save you a lot of money.
For cats and some dogs, especially when a lower dose of venom is injected, we see the animal becoming progressively weaker. The classic cat presentation is what we call the “plastic cat” – the cat is so floppy it is like it is made out of plasticine. A dog that has received a lower dose of venom may look much the same, or just a bit weak and staggery.
Many people don’t see the pet being bitten, and you will almost never be able to find the bite wounds when a pet has been bitten by a snake. The tooth marks are very small and there is rarely any bleeding, so not being able to find tooth marks doesn’t mean your pet hasn’t been bitten. High dose Vitamin C doesn’t work, so please don’t waste time trying to give this.
We have a type of antivenom in stock that covers Tiger and Brown (Dugite) snakes, so knowing what type of snake bit your pet isn’t critical. Please don’t kill a snake to try to identify it, as you risk being bitten yourself and once again time is important and trying to kill a snake will take valuable minutes.
To minimise the chance of your pet being bitten, keep your dog on a lead while walking through bushland and grass, and consider keeping cats indoors or in an enclosure. Cat enclosures such as those made by Katzone (www.katzone.com.au) also help protect your cats from injuries from cars and other animals.

Sniffing is a really valuable tool for our dogs, so its really important to ensure you promote and allow sniffing activities.
Whilst it can feel like forever when our dog stops and sniffs, in reality its not usually long at all.
Remember that when our dog is sniffing there are so many benefits to them :- they are gaining information, destressing, using their brains and lowering their heart rate to name just a few!

So when your dog pauses to check out a scent, make the most of the time and stop, be present and give them the time they need to sniff.

Good advice! 😊

When a dog trusts you they are more likely to listen, understand and respond when you want them to do something. And if they don’t, it’s not because of a lack of respect. It is due to a lack of understanding or a break in communication on your part, and rather than punishing your dog because you think he is being disrespectful, you must spend more time teaching and helping him negotiate the human world he lives in.

Hope you are having a happy and safe Easter. ✨🐣✨

REMEMBER. Easter treats can be toxic to our pets! 😰🐶

What crimes have your pets committed? 🤔🐶

Bonus points if you show us a pic of the prime suspect 😄👇

RSPCA WA said these five household hazards should be kept away from prying paws:

🍫 Chocolate: Even a small amount of chocolate can have terrible consequences.
Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea, lack of appetite, rapid heart rate, tremors, and seizures. If ingested in large enough quantities, poisoning can be fatal.

🍇 Raisins, grapes and currants: These are common ingredients in hot cross buns.
They can cause acute kidney failure in some dogs, which is debilitating, expensive to treat, and can be fatal.

🌷 Easter Lilies: Along with several of the other types of lilies, these can put your cat into acute kidney failure, which can be fatal.
Even a small nibble or pollen on their fur or paws while grooming can be very dangerous.

🍬 Foil/wrappers: Foil and wrappers can be swallowed and cause a blockage in your pet’s intestinal tract, requiring surgery.
The artificial “grass” in Easter baskets poses a similar risk.

🐣 Easter toys: Baby chick toys, plastic eggs and bunnies are cute for kids, but they can also be tempting for pets and pose a choking hazard.

Morning everyone. FYI.

Pet owners beware, a chemical that can be found in trace amounts in some COVID-19 rapid antigen test (RAT) kits may be toxic to animals if ingested. 🧪⚠️

The WA says RAT buffer solutions may contain a chemical called sodium azide which could be a risk to small animals such as puppies, small dogs, cats, kittens, small mammals, and birds.

"As Rapid Antigen Test kits become part of our lives, please ensure you take the care to keep them out of reach of animals and dispose of them properly to minimise the risk to your pets," the RSPCA said.

"Please call your veterinarian or contact the Animal Poisons Helpline on 1300 869 738 urgently if an animal has ingested even a small amount of the buffer solution."

Sometimes it’s easier to just not plant in the first place!

The list of poisonous plants grown in gardens is long. While serious poisoning of dogs resulting from dining on the garden is not common, it has happened.
