The following tips on humanâs body language are applicable when interacting with any dog, but are especially important when dealing with a fearful dog, or any dog who appears worried or unsure about an interaction. Adopt mannerisms and teach others who interact with your dog to do so as well.
1. Let the dog come to you! If a dog is frightened, SHE must be allowed to decide whether or not to approach. Itâs never a good idea to restrain a dog and/or force her to accept contact from others. Remember the âfight or flightâ response; if the opportunity for flight is taken away, a dogâs choices are very limited. If the dog doesnt want to approach you and say HI, then leave it alone, never force yourself on a dog! Just like people, there are dogs that arent "social butterflies" and just want to be left alone/ignored by strangers, not be put on the spot by people they do not know. They are happy and content just interacting with their own pack / family... and thats totally fine! Dont try and MAKE THEM be something they ARENT! Accept who they are.
2. Turn to the Side. Facing a dog directly is more confrontational than keeping your body turned partially or completely to the side; even turning your head to the side will make a frightened or worried dog feel less anxious.
3. No staring! A direct stare is a threat in the animal kingdom. It is perfectly fine to look at a dog; just soften your expression and donât hard stare directly into her eyes. Do not allow children to put their faces near your dogâs face or to stare into her eyes. Adults who insist on direct eye contact with strange dogs tend to get bitten or at the very least, lunged at.
4. Donât hover. Leaning over a dog can cause the dog to become afraid and possibly defensive. When we bend over dogs to pet them or to cuddle them, we are unwittingly offering a posture of threat and intimidation.
5. Pet appropriately. Approaching dogs by patting them on the head is ill-advised. Envision the interaction from the dogâs point of view; a palm approaching from above can be alarming. Its also a very dominant thing to do to a dog which often triggers defensive or fearful behavior in a dog. Itâs not that dogs should never be petted on top of the head (like your own dog), but that head-patting (or petting over the dogâs shoulders, back, or rump) should not be used as an initial approach. It is wiser to make a fist, hold it down low while you are crouching down and (facing them sideways and not staring at them) and allow the dog to approach YOU and sniff (IF they want to), then very slowly pet the dog on the chest (only if its comfortable at that point,). Likewise, a hand moving in quickly to grab for a dogâs collar is more potentially fear-inducing than a hand moving slowly to a dogâs chest, scratching it, then moving up to take hold of the collar.
6. Stoop, donât swoop. Small dogs in particular are often swooped down upon when people want to pick them up. Fast, direct, overhead movements are much more frightening than slow, indirect ones. To lift a small dog, crouch down, pet the dog for a moment, then gently slip your hands under her belly and chest, and lift.
7. Watch your smile. While humans interpret a smile as friendly, a dog might not be as fond of seeing your pearly whites. A show of teeth is, after all, a threat in the animal kingdom. Smile at dogs with a closed mouth!

DECOYS AND PROTECTION DOGS WANTED IN FLAGSTAFF, AZ!
We are looking for a few people to train as protection dog decoys in Flagstaff, AZ! Must be fit, athletic, healthy, injury free, have good stamina, endurance, balance, and strength, someone who doesnt mind getting dirty, and must be a dog lover. (Those with big egos need not apply!)
We are also looking for handlers with protection dogs (Mals, Dobies, Dutchies, Rotts, and GSDs) of all ages for our decoy training.
Toxic Algae Blooms are back and have already killed a dog in Canada over the July 4th weekend and at least 9 cattle in North Dakota.
Toxic Blue Green Algae has already shut down numerous lakes in San Francisco, Sonoma County, the San Luis Reservoir and has hit Boston, Colorado Springs & Boulder, North Carolina, Florida, 32 bodies of water in New York, & Boston.
Now that the weather is warm, multiple stories are surfacing with a similar chain of events: the dog goes for a swim in the local pond or lake, enjoying the cool water on a hot day. After swimming to his heartâs content, happy dog and pet parent head home. But on the way home, the dog starts to act strangely, either vomiting, diarrhea, or seizures. Pet parent rushes their dog to the vet, but within a matter of hours, the dog passes.
Blue green algae is highly toxic to dogs and people, and simply swimming in a body of water with blue green algae puts the person or pet at serious risk of becoming fatally ill. Dogs are more susceptible to poisoning because they are more likely to drink the water or lick their wet fur after swimming.
How does blue green algae harm a dog?
Toxic algae produces a neurotoxin âthat can cause liver damage, lead to respiratory paralysis or produce other fatal conditions,â stated a recent New York Times article. As previously stated, initial symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures. Other symptoms may include weakness, difficulty breathing, disorientation, and collapse.
Toxic algae cases in the news
The New York Times article mentions that âthe danger drew national attention in recent days after a woman in North Carolina lost her three dogs â Harpo, Abby and Izzy â after they had gone swimming in a pond.â Another recent article from NBC discusses recent toxic algae cases, including the North Carolina dogs as well as dogs in Texas and Georgia.
How to spot blue green algae
Unfortunately, there are no remedies to counteract the effects of these toxins, so itâs important to watch out for affected waters and avoid them. If you suspect your dog swam in water contaminated with toxic algae, rinse them off immediately and get them to the vet.
Pet parents of water-loving dogs should familiarize themselves with the signs of toxic algae. Hereâs what to look for:
- It may look like grains of floating green sand or scum
- May look like âpea soupâ
- An appearance of paint or paint chips on the surface of the water
- Water smells bad
For information and updates on nearby lakes and ponds, follow your local news outlets and park departments on social media and call them to find out the condition of the water of the lake or pond you want to take your dog to prior to going.
Algae can also lurk under the waterâs surface or attach to plants, making it harder to detect
When in doubt, stay out! Itâs simply not worth taking such a high risk.

ABOUT SIRIUS K9 ACADEMY AZ
SIRIUS K9 ACADEMY AZ is located in Flagstaff, AZ and is owned and managed by Caroline Haldeman. Our highly trained and experienced staff has been educating and helping thousands of dog owners attain their goals with their K9 partners for more than sixteen years! Sirius K9 Academy was created in Orange County, CA in Feb 2004 to offer those wanting more then the generally low-quality "pet training" offered elsewhere, and we are thrilled to provide training in Flagstaff, AZ as well. Sirius K9 Academy has received many accolades, awards, and reviews on countless sites online because we are dedicated to every client's success and we constantly strive to exceed your expectations.
We work with all breeds and all ages and our staff is some of the best you will ever work with! No one can match our expertise because they lack the extensive experience and knowledge that we possess. We have over 30 years experience! All of our trainers are Pet CPR & First Aid Certified and are Certified Expert Dog Trainers (they have attended the Tom Rose School for Dog Trainers in High Ridge, MO to get certified.) Most trainers you see advertising their services have very little hands-on professional schooling (if any) and are not certified!
Some of the many classes we offer include Basic Obedience, Intermediate Obedience, Advanced Obedience, K9 Group Hikes, Field Trip Obedience classes, Personal Protection / Security K9 Training, Detection & K9 Search Training, Tracking, Competition Obedience Training, and Remote Collar Training.
We offer Private One-On-One Custom Lessons at your home or office or at our location.
We also provide In-Kennel Training (Boot Camp Training!) What separates us from everyone else, ALL the dogs we take in for training for our clients stay at the homes of our trainers (NOT at a high-stress boarding kennel) and we limit the number of dogs we take in so every dog in our care gets a ton of attention! We also provide video updates of the dogâs progress as well as photos so you always know how your dog is doing and progressing with the training.
We offer BALANCED TRAINING! We use verbal and physical praise, and treats and toys to motivate and reward the dogs, as well as a training collar best suited to the dogâs temperament to reinforce all the formal commands and to correct negative behavior. We also encourage our clients to use a different language when training their dogs. We use a variety of training techniques and are up-to-date on the latest training tools and methods. We know that every client and dog is different, so we are flexible to meet your situation and needs.
Our obedience and protection training standards are unmatched in the industry and our training sessions are always fun, challenging, and rewarding. If you want to develop an awesome relationship with your K9 partner while having fun working your dog ,and you want your dog to respond to your commands reliably, even with difficult distractions, then you have come to the right place!
Whether your dog is a strong powerful working dog or a timid shy dog (or somewhere in between), is big or small, young or old, let us help your dog reach its potential and make them a pleasure to own. Our goal is to help every dog become neutral to the environment (including to other dogs and people) and improve and broaden every handler's skills and knowledge so that they can become a confident, savvy, and responsible dog owner.
We specialize in German and Czech Shepherds and other highly driven working breeds, such as Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Belgian Malinois, and Dutch Shepherds.
