Welcome Lexi to Rhody Paws!🐾

Lexi has got to be the BIGGEST pity we have ever seen! Her owner wants to work on her self-control so she can feel more confident having Lexi on leash and around guests. 😎

Lexi can also become very shy when it comes to nail clipping, so her program will include some cooperative care techniques so we can file those talons down! 🦅💅

Need to leave the dog at home? Tell them to take a hike! 🐾🌲

We are now offering field trips to past & current clients! This is a great way for the pups to get some exercise and decompress without sacrificing any training progress!

During our outing, we focus on good manners, automatic check-ins & recall training. Roxy enjoyed her first hike today and returned home a pooped pooch! 💩🐶

Normal, healthy dog play is not 25-30 dogs playing for 8 hours straight. Normal, healthy dog play is a small group of dogs periodically playing with one another and taking breaks when they get tired. The bigger the group, and the longer they play, the more overstimulated they get which can lead to fights and increased behavior issues. Make sure when you're picking out a daycare or play center for your dogs, the groups are small and they get adequate breaks to decompress!

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

Welcome Nala to Rhody Paws! 🦁🐾

Nala is a 6 month old mixed breed in need of some basic manners. She is very playful and lovable (sometimes to a fault!) and tends to jump and nip when she gets excited.

During her first lesson, Nala picked up on her self control exercises quickly. We can’t wait to see her evolve and mature throughout her program! 💫

Welcome Juno to Rhody Paws! 🐾

Juno is a 4 year old mixed breed who was recently rescued by her new family. Juno can be generally fearful of most things, so we are just starting off with some basics to boost her confidence.

Training can be an incredible way to bond with a new dog because it helps build a line of communication and trust! Once Juno has her foundations down, we will work on counter conditioning to help her handle new situations knowing her owners have her back! ❤️🐾

Welcome Roxy to Rhody Paws! Roxy is a 4-month-old French Bulldog who is with us for 8 weeks of basic training. Life with a puppy can be hectic so we are here to provide guidance to handle all of the jumping, nipping, and potty messes!

In her first few weeks with us, we have learned that Roxy is very confident and strong willed, and will do ANYTHING for some hot dog! 🌭 🐾

Meet Luca the golden retriever! ☀️🐾

After being surrendered from not so great circumstances (along with his 19 brothers and sisters), Luca found a great home! His owners want to make sure he is given the best start, so we are working with him twice a week to help curb his jumping/nipping and teaching him some basic cues.

Puppies don’t wait, so neither should their training!

We love this pair! Welcome Maverick the Vizsla and Xena the Shepard mix! 🐾🐾

At Rhody Paws, it doesn’t matter if you have a puppy or adult dog, both are just as capable of learning new skills! These two are learning how to greet guests politely, walk nicely on a leash, and rest on their mat during dinner time! 🐶

It’s important to note that when you have multiple dogs, each one will need individual attention before they can perform these behaviors together. 👯‍♀️

Rocky’s first “happy vet visit”! 🩺🐾

In the past, Rocky has had very bad experiences with being retrained and muzzled during vet visits. While working on cooperative care techniques behind the scenes, today we visited to just hang out!

For a change, Rocky just got to chill in the room and receive treats from the doctor and vet techs! As he gets more comfortable we will add in more body handling that would occur during a real visit. We are so proud of Rocky and his owners for dedicating the time and resources to helping him feel free of stress, way to go! 🎉🐶🌟

Matcha is an Akita Inu who needs some help containing herself around other dogs on leash. She lives in the bustling city where she encounters other dogs close by often! Despite her breed, Matcha loves playing with her doggy friends during play dates. Her owners just want to make sure everyone is staying safe while out on leash! 🦮🐾

Congratulations to Chief for completing his 6 weeks with Rhody Paws! 🐾🎓🎉

Dog ownership is an ongoing journey, but we were so happy to help Chief get on the right track! He bombarded us (lovingly) during his initial consultation. By the time we reached his last lesson, not a single jump or mouthing of the arms! He also became fluent with resting on his mat, “leave-it”, and “drop-it”. Nice job Chief! 🌟🐶

Cookie’s owner has goals of making him a therapy dog, so today we worked on some basic skills in distracting environments! This is also the perfect opportunity to work on socialization which can help puppies become more adaptable in the future. 🌟🐶

Welcome Joey to Rhody Paws! Joey is a 7-month-old hound mix in need of some manners. His owners want help getting him under control so he is enrolled in our Puppy Homeschool Program! This involves two sessions a week for 8 weeks, one of which our trainer works directly with him for the owners.

Brothers who train together, stay together. 💪🏽🐾

Welcome Hamm and Boomer to Rhody Paws! These two jump all over guests upon arrival and tend to be counter thieves, so we have been working on some self control!

It’s important to train each dog individually before expecting them to be able to perform together, but here we were able to have Boomer and Hamm on their mats at the same time! 🐶🐶⭐️⭐️

Welcome Chief to Rhody Paws! 🐾🎾

Chief is a black lab/heeler mix and as you can imagine, comes with A LOT of ENERGY. 🌀

We are working on calm greetings while guests arrive, so we decided to train Chief to stay on his mat! This territory also comes with a management plan to prevent incidents of jumping along with an exercise/enrichment regiment!

Training assistant Charlie got to join us at EWG Regional High School! 🔴⚪️🖤🐾

We were invited to speak to their students about careers in animal training. This included marine mammal training and of course, dog training! The techniques we use here at Rhody Paws mirrors training done with animals in zoos and aquariums! 🐬🐶

For our demonstration , we showed students how to train behaviors using capturing, shaping and target training. We also highlighted how we use training to teach cooperative care behaviors, especially when it comes to nail clipping!

Aspen is a rescue pup in need of some self control, especially when it comes to her demand barking and jumping!

During her third lesson, we worked outside going between high energy and control behaviors (like sit!). And yes, we train even if it snows! ☃️

Welcome Bodie to Rhody Paws! 🐾

We are especially excited to welcome Bodie because his program focuses on cooperative care (one of our FAVORITE things to train!)

Cooperative care, or husbandry training, asks our dogs to voluntarily participate in their own healthcare. Bodie suffered from an ear infection and over time became very averse to handling around his ears and visits to the vet.

Our ultimate goal is to be able to administer ear drops and be able to clean them with ease! 🧼🐶

Cookie is one smart cookie! 🍪🐾

We are so happy to welcome Cookie to the Rhody Paws family! At 14 weeks old, we are covering everything “puppy” such as potty training, nipping/chewing, jumping, self control and basic cues. Cookie caught on to our training games quickly for his first lesson, we can’t wait to see how far he goes! 💫🐾
