What do dog trainers mean when we say “socialize your puppy”? 🤔💭

What you might think is to have your puppy play with as many dogs & people as possible…but it is quite the contrary! Good socialization is the collective positive exposure to people, places & things meaning we are looking for quality, not quantity!

Cooper took his first socialization trip to Marshall’s today where he was able to do some world watching from the safety of the cart! Our goal is to have him remain neutral and handler focused. After he was good and tired, we also worked on some nail trimming desensitization. We were even able to nonchalantly cut some nails as a result! All of this work will help Cooper become a go anywhere, do anything type of dog! ⭐️

🐾Get ready to see him often, because we will be working with little Cooper 5 days a week for the foreseeable future! Cooper’s owners want a well-rounded companion, and we are happy to be a part of their village in making that happen!

Welcome Phoebe to Rhody Paws! Phoebe is a 6 year old Newfoundland who is preparing for her therapy dog test! Her owner has been taking her Newfoundlands to Hasbro’s Children’s Hospital for years, and now it’s Phoebe’s time to shine! It’s not every day Charlie gets tagged in as a demo dog!

Now that Hank has spent a few weeks with us, we are working on whittling down his threshold in regard to being around other dogs on leash!

Dogs can be selectively reactive, so with Charlie acting as a predictable demo dog, Hank was able to practice:

* Walking behind another dog
* Walking in front of another dog
* Hopping up on an object while another dog passes
* Head on passes
* Watching a high activity such as another dog running/playing fetch/jumping etc.

Orientation, behavior, and the look of the (trigger) dog can all influence whether your dog has a reactive episode or not. Using Charlie for practice helped us identify any weak spots!

Welcome Ginny to Rhody Paws!

If you’re wondering how her face is so cute, she is a black lab/Saint Bernard mix! In addition to being so cute, Ginny can have some chaotic energy at times but LOVES the training game! After just 3 lessons, she has already became proficient in her recall, “leave-it” & “drop it”!

Welcome Bandit to Rhody Paws! Bandit is a 1-year-old cattle dog/aussie mix who needs some help learning the basics!

Most importantly, we are helping him walk nicely on leash when he is faced with distractions. Bandit loves other dogs and can get a little too excited when he sees them during a walk.

Rocky took a hike! We are so excited to welcome Rocky back to Rhody Paws. After doing several training programs with us, his owners decided to take advantage of our field trips to ensure he gets his needs met while they’re away! 🌲🐾
