06/06/2024

That’s awesome you have trained your dog to sit and wait for you to put the food bowl down and be released…… But what is that really teaching your dog? I’ll tell you.

Impulse control.

And that’s great! But that doesn’t teach your dog that you control the resources and not them. That doesn’t mean go sticking hands in their food bowls either….

A better game to do is to practice healthy food claiming exercises. Put the food bowl down with no commands, and use SPACIAL PRESSURE to claim the food bowl. Once THEY choose to back up or wait, then you can release them. But putting them in a sit is just a command they’re obeying around food, not them fundamentally understanding to respect YOUR space as an owner and a person. Don’t be a doormat.

A lot of people tell dog owners to practice “nothing in life is free” and while enforcing existential feeding or playtime with toys or dogs or whatever can help a dogs work ethic, it’s less about leadership and more about leverage. HOW do you interact with your dog? Do you limit your dogs access to free play, food etc? HOW are you limiting the access? That is key. 🔑 The food claiming exercise is FUNDAMENTALLY different than making your dog sit and wait.

Us as dog owners and humans need to be more assertive when it comes to our dogs. YES, we love them, YES they are our babies. But when it comes to resource guarding, reactivity etc, a lot of the behaviors can be easily managed with a handler who is more assertive and less likely to be a pushover. It’s our job as dog trainers to recognize that and teach our clients WHEN and HOW to intercept and be assertive.

Claim your doorways, claim your space, claim your couch, don’t let your dog walk all over you, and I PROMISE a lot of these problem behaviors will diminish. Do this in an assertive manner and this will reshape a healthy relationship between you and your dog.

Tangent idea sparked by the amazing and his recent video on resource guarding.

Meet Goose! He’s a 3 year old here for his board & train 😍 He’s a handsome sweet boy but owners need some helping with him jumping up on people, leash manners, off leash reliability and obedience. They’ve had him about a year now so they wanted to get some more formal training. So far so good! He might change my mind about huskies 😂

Meet Kona the 🐶 Kona is here for our Advanced Skills to work on being the best girl ever!

Owners complaints and goals :

- she is housebroken, but has frequent accidents
- tears up things if left alone
- barks excessively
- very hard to correct her for barking (ignores)
- she loves to herd their animals (safely), but she “turns off her ears” and won’t listen to recall, commands etc when she’s in herding mode
- recently starting licking people’s faces and would like that to stop
- needs overall solid off leash obedience especially recall

We’re excited to add Kona to the pack 💕

‘My dog is naughty/bad/untrainable/dominant/stupid’

I hear this most weeks on intake forms. Usually I get pretty excited to see these cos I know I’m gonna get to change a dog and owners life!

So often we write our dogs off as any adjective that fits the above and honestly, I’m yet to meet a dog who fits any of those adjectives (and I have worked with 10k plus dogs over the ten years I’ve been doing this!). I do however week in week out meet dogs with health issues that contribute to their slow progress in terms of training. Did you know dogs don’t show pain or discomfort how we do? We often think ‘oh he isn’t limping or yelping so he is fine’.

Please read the examples below ⬇️

🐾 A huntaway cross who I work with who bit his owner. Reluctant to have his feet cleaned, got spicy over any intense handling, had periods of seeming insanity and relentless barking and being unable to calm down. Huntaways are vocal dogs… but…

Turns out he had hip dysplasia. This dog didn’t limp. He wasn’t lame in any way. He chased his ball and sprinted and jumped and had no issues physically on the surface however under that behaviour was pain.

🐾 A French bulldog. Resource guarding to the extreme. Bit his owners while resource guarding the knot pattern in their wooden floor. Also bombed around without a worry in the world and had no outward signs of pain.

Turns out he had a severe spinal condition causing intermittent excruciating pain.

🐾 A young spaniel owned by a very good friend who was having confidence issues. She would ‘tap out’ of training on the regular and my friend went from ‘this is my ticket dog who will represent my country’ to ‘is this even possible?’

Dog had hormonal issues and likely spikes of hormones left right and centre. A carefully timed spay and she is now grade 6 in agility.

🐾 A friends Border Collie. Owned by a very experienced and talented agility handler and trainer. Regularly ‘checked out’ of training sessions, seemed to not be able to learn things that were moderately straightforward. Described by other trainers as ‘oh she is just a border collie it’s what they are like’.

Turns out she is mostly deaf.

🐾 A black Labrador. Always social and friendly and attended brilliant puppy classes and adolescent classes. Had the best start training wise you can imagine. He started showing some intermittent aggression to his owners in the home and aggression to other dogs out and about.

Turns out he had bilateral elbow dysplasia.

🐾 Young German Shepherd. Always energetic and silly in her behaviour but suddenly got worse. Excessive zoomies, inability to settle, increased reactivity to other dogs, reluctant to get in the car, obsessive destruction at home.

Turns out she had an infection in her va**na that was causing discomfort and exacerbating all those teenage behaviours to the point of being unmanageable.

🐾 My own dog! My NSDTR started missing his dog walk contact early last year. I was tearing my hair out trying to fix it.

Turns out he had a minor iliopsoas strain and some physio fixed the issue for us.

———————————

All these dogs have one thing in common. They are not stupid or untrainable or naughty or dominant. They are uncomfortable and that is triggering extreme behaviour fallout.

None of the above issues would be resolveable with training. All of the issues will be resolveable with training ONLY when the pain is resolved. Some of them will have drastic improvement from the moment the pain or discomfort is managed!

If your behaviourist or trainer doesn’t immediately advise a veterinary visit if any aggression, excessive ‘naughtiness’ or strange behaviour is present, walk away immediately. Even if you think your dog is fine, visit the vets. Ask for a thorough examination and push for a proper evaluation of your dog from nose to tail and potentially blood tests too. If you’re still not sure, get a second opinion.

You cannot train the pain or discomfort out of your dog. Address THIS first and foremost.

Sorry for the lack of posting on here - we take so much video content and explain it to our clients everyday that by the time the day is done the last thing I want to do is post on here 😅

Basil hit his 4 week mark today and I swear he is a new dog 😩😍 He has come SOOOOO far his owners are shocked and it’s truly such a happy moment for me.

Basil has gone to the park 2-3 times now and his next outting will be a much busier place such as bass pro shops or Home Depot. He can handle it now and we finally have a great relationship to where he can trust me. These types of cases are so rewarding to me 🫶🏻

I promise I will make a long detailed video soon to show his progress but in the meantime I might just post a few clips!

Phoebe has finished 4 weeks here with us and has learned to be a much better member of society. She went from being the first dog to ever scale my privacy fence with ease to eat my goats, to respecting boundaries and fences. She went from some pretty serious hyper fixation/aggression towards cats to being able to coexist. She also learned leash manners and all of the other commands our program includes but her behavior is what we were most concerned about fixing. Phoebe, you were a tough one, but you taught me a lot. And I hope that by teaching you things, you can relay that gift to them by being a good girl 💕

Please share if you know anyone qualified to work with me and dogs!

This opportunity has potential for more but as of now I need someone to handle potty/exercise breaks early morning and possibly late evenings.

MUST be a trustworthy individual - I will not put up with it.

Competitive pay, flexible hours, playing with dogs🐾

Introducing Phoebe! She’s 56% Siberian Husky + 40% Supermutt (Samoyed, Mountain Cur, Beagle, Golden Retriever) and 4% Australian Cattle Dog. What a mix!

Phoebe has an extensive history and this is her second home. She was adopted by current owners in March. Phoebe is sweet with people but hasn’t been socialized with dogs.

Clients goals for training:
- learning when to leave the cats alone
- overall on and off leash obedience
- to stop pulling on leash
- get more socialization
- get better in the crate
- not be so reactive to dogs/small animals
- learn to settle

Upon drop off we have noticed Phoebe has pretty intense body language with dogs and will show teeth/snarl/lunge. She got better and actually is super playful with more exposure which is a good sign. She is also pretty dominant and marks everywhere 😱 She’s a super sweet girl but she’s definitely going to be some work! Fortunately she’s food motivated! Stay tuned 😝

This right here is the best Christmas gift any dog trainer could ask for 😭

Not going to lie this dog went from being an aggressive, unpredictable, reactive stranger, to a predictable, tolerant and honestly fun dog.

We started out as strangers and ended up with a mutual respect and trust for each other. I knew where and when his triggers were and how to mitigate them. I learned so much from you Igor and I’m so happy I was able to put my skills to use to change you and your parents lives forever 🐶

09/12/2023

“Will my dog forget about me?!” 😅

We get a LOT of clients asking us this question and the answer is ALWAYS no. Dogs never forget their people and no they don’t think they were abandoned 🥲🥹

Here at FFK9 we STRIVE on relationship building and meeting dogs needs via food, water, play, social and pack. Once dogs needs are met they are content as dogs don’t think like humans “oh my goodness my owners left me forever”.

This video is a prime example 😍 Igor has been with us for almost 4 weeks now and he IMMEDIATELY new his peoples 🥲 Todays midway went GREAT and everyone was so shocked at his progress.

You’ll see them again soon in 2 weeks bud 👏💕

Happy Holidays yall 🎅 Enjoy and share! 👏

Dog training is a lifestyle, not a hobby

After adopting Caesar, my first sport dog, my service dog and overall best friend and partner in crime, I realized dog training was a serious passion of mine. Having helped hundreds of people with their dogs, find that ‘wow moment’, I realized how extremely rewarding it was. Dog training doesn’t have to be hard, it just requires clear communication in a way the dog can understand.
