Throwback Thursday: This is Taska, my first assigned MWD at Keesler AFB. Hated anything on 2 wheels and kids, such a sweetheart though. She passed away while I was the trainer there, I couldn’t be there as the vet administered the pink needle as it was crushing to me. She didn’t pass alone though, the rest of the kennel ensured she would pass over the Rainbow Bridge.

This is session #2 from the clicker training stage. You can tell Ludo is far more engaged and figured out that touching the clicker more than once releases the reward. Even though Ludo has figured out that touching the clicker means releasing the reward, further training is necessary to dial it in. Imprinting a marker does a couple of things. First you are creating and teaching an audible/visual language that both of you understand. Second, you are hardwiring the dog to understand that training is enjoyable and extremely rewarding (especially if you have a food driven canine like Ludo). Third, you are training your canines brain to critically think and problem solve to release the reward for specific/nonspecific tasks during training and in life. And fourth, you are teaching yourself timing. Timing is pivotal for canine training. Without proper timing and training protocols in place, you can cause mixed communication signals as to what your canine is doing wrong or doing successfully. This timing practice gives you the opportunity to notice not only the macro aspects of training but also the micro's of training like picking up subtle physical cues and behavioral characteristics that take place during the shaping of behavior. Just like any other physical task, it takes repetition and a desire to connect with your little family member. Just like everything we do in life, it takes practice. Enjoy the time you are spending with your canine during training and your relationship will flourish.

Ludo has been coming along! Today was the task of connecting with the clicker 2 times to unlock the reward. Clicker training isn't some magical way of training dogs. You actually don't need a clicker, you can use any sound, or communicative device (think about deaf dogs) to let your canine buddy know that they have completed a task successfully. This would be considered the training stage of Ludo understanding what the clicker conveys. This is the first session that we conducted after multiple training events imprinting the "meaning" of what the click sound is. You'll see that Ludo is determined to unlock the reward but is confused at first as to why I'm not giving him the reward. At the end of the first session Ludo's confidence and ability to catch on the "game" significantly improves.

This is Theresa and Re*****on! Re*****on is a Golden Doodle, and is just the sweetest guy you could ever meet! Theresa came to me about possible aggressive behavior and to help build and establish boundaries inside the home and out in public venues. Turns out, the little guy just gets over stimulated from his environment upon meeting people and other furry friends. In the last six weeks of training, Theresa learned clear communication tactics for behavior shaping and imprinting. Theresa has devoted countless hours of training and dedication to build a competent and balanced team. Theresa is now able to take Re*****on to public venues and gets all the complements about how well behaved he is! Theresa may have completed the 6 week foundations course but that doesn't mean she isn't devoted to continue training and being the best mother and Re*****on being the best companion he can be. Great Job guys! Thank you for your trust in me Theresa!

This is Ares. He's one of the dogs I handled while deployed to Afghanistan. Ares stands out amongst all the other dogs in my career because not only was he extremely trainable and an excellent detector dog, but we had some communication issues. He wasn't too fond of me and I wasn't too fond of him. During the course of our time together pre and post deployment, "marker" training helped bridge the gap between us. With a lot of training, rapport, and just identifying his physical behavior cues and posture, we made it work as a team. Although we butt heads often due to some personality differences, we respected each other and knew that we would be able to count on each other in case the mission wasn't panning out as expected.

My mission to everyone I come into contact involving canines, is to help them better understand basic foundations involving communication with their furry family member.
