Today is Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day.
Pets can have birth defects similar to us humans. They can be caused by genetics, breed-related conditions, infection, toxins, or trauma.
Some common defects are cleft palate, limb deformities, deformities of the eyes, nose, and palate, heart defects, hernias, retained testicles, and liver shunts are a few. Some defects can be fixed surgically or with medicine. Most pets who have birth defects can live a full life.
My own cat, Divot, has a few birth defects. When he was found, and I took him in, he just had slits where his eyes should have been. He had a double enucleation, a surgery to remove both eyes. The eye tissue that was there was underdeveloped, so it was removed, and his eyelids sutured shut. He gets around with no problem in the house unless you move a chair out or leave a cabinet door open! We also recently found out he has Polycystic Kidney Disease. It was an incidental finding while ultrasounding his bladder to check for stones.
Do you have a pet with a birth defect?
Scratchboard training
Did you know I offer training sessions? I will sometimes recommend using a scratchboard for your dog if they are anxious about getting their nails trimmed. Hazel was very anxious about her front paws being touched, so I recommended a scratchboard and did a few training sessions with her to get her introduced to one. She caught on in one session!
If your dog doesn't like their nails trimmed, try a scratchboard. You can always call or message me to help with a training plan as well.
Fun Dog Fact! How intelligent is your dog??

"You can't teach an old dog new tricks." That is a lie!
Check out Ozzy learning touch/target! Ozzy will be 14 years old this year and this is the 3rd time I worked with him with this training!
Cats can be trained! Sometimes pretty easily. I've been training my cat, Moose, to go into a carrier. I've been recording the sessions and have put together a video of how it has gone. I used a clicker to help mark the behavior I wanted.
If you need help training your pet, let me know! I also offer clicker training bundles that include an hour of one-on-one training with me, an intro to training and clicker training, a clicker, treat bag, treats! Call or message me today to schedule!
A couple changes/benefits I found during/after training, Moose snuggles with me more and has been more attentive to what I’m doing.
Here is a snippet of what I’ve been working on! Clicker training my cat Moose to go into a carrier!
This is a great part where he is getting the idea of what I want him to do. As soon as he gets his treat (and sometimes praise because he enjoys that as well), he turns right back around to go back into (or partially into) the carrier!
I am offering clicker training bundles! You get an hour of one-on-one training with me teaching you how to clicker train and we also start introducing your pet to clicker training, some handouts on training, a clicker, a treat bag, and some treats! Call or message me today to schedule!

In my last post I mention desensitization and counter conditioning to get your pet used to a nail trim. But what is that??
I have been working with my dog, Dixie, to get her more comfortable with nails trims and here is a video of some progress I have made. We're not completely there yet, but check out the progress!
If you are interested in doing this with your pet, give me a call or email and we can get you scheduled!
