Flea and Tick season is upon us! Make sure you have preventatives for your pets.

Ticks can carry many diseases. Some of these diseases can also affect humans.
Fleas can trigger allergies, cause anemia, and carry tapeworms.

It is important to treat your pet with the correct products. Many cats have had severe reactions after being treated with a dog product. There are also counterfeit preventatives, so purchasing them from your veterinarian is best to avoid counterfeits.

If you have questions about products or counterfeits, I would love to help you!

This Easter, remember, lilies can kill cats. The entire plant is toxic! It can cause kidney failure within 36-72 hours. The toxicity can happen by ingestion or even by mouthing very small parts of the plant. Toxicity can even happen if they drink the water the plant is in!

Heartworm disease

Vet clinics can test for this disease with a blood test. The earlier it is detected, the better the chances the pet will recover. Your vet clinic will have recommendations on how often your pet should be tested. Since the larvae take 6 months to mature, it takes at least 6 months for a dog to test positive. If your dog is under 7 months they can start on prevention, then get tested 6 months later. Dogs over 7 months should be tested before starting prevention.

Cat heartworm infections are harder to detect because cats are less likely to have adult heartworms and have fewer heartworms.

Heartworms can be prevented by a few different preventives. Most are given monthly and work very well. But if you miss a dose, give it late, or the prevention gets vomited or spit out, your pet is at risk. Talk to your veterinarian about which prevention is best for your pet.

Pet First Aid Month

Here are some things you can do to help keep your pet safe in case of an emergency:
🐾Secure the accident area and remove any physical threats (a chewed electrical wire, aggressive animals, harmful substances, glass, splinters, etc).
🐾Keep calm.
🐾Compress any bleeding, minor or major cuts.
🐾Check vital signs (pulse rate, breathing, etc.).
🐾Start CPR if the pet shows breathing issues.
🐾Call emergency numbers.
🐾Perform more first aid as directed by your vet.
🐾Check if your pet has broken or injured bones before moving them.
🐾Drive your pet to the nearest vet clinic as soon as possible.

Today is World Hamster Day!
Some fun facts about hamsters!
🐾 hamsters' incisor teeth have no roots and never stop growing. Gnawing keeps their teeth nice and sharp while preventing them from becoming too overgrown.
🐾their name comes from the German word "hamstern," which means to forage.
🐾their cheeks are built for food storage to bring back to their burrows and also have a secondary purpose: They fill up with air so hamsters can float in water
