Sometimes you find interesting things as you harvest muscadines! Each year I find at least one nest, but keeping them intact is a bit of a challenge. The nest falls apart by itself so you have to prune it out with its supporting branches.

Sometimes well-meaning friends tell me that being a flower farmer is a frivolous venture. Growing vegetables is much more practical. Today, I received this update from a ministry in Ukraine.

"This week was full of ministry, including handing out 120 bags of groceries, unloading humanitarian aid trucks, helping with the personal needs of people in their places, and cooking porridge for civilians. I got the idea of buying flowers for women who received aid from us. I thought maybe it wasn't time for this yet, but when I saw the smiles and tears of happiness of the refugees, I understood that it had been the right decision. One of the women told me: "I want to thank you for everything, for clothing, for groceries, but especially for the flowers -- it is a symbol of hope, mercy and peace." When you hear what people are saying, how hard it was for them to live under occupation or under gunfire or how they evacuated -- and then see the smiles at the flowers and aid, you understand that you are doing the right thing."

So, I am crying - again - as I post this. Not for me, but for the victims of this awful war. How something so fragile and transient can bring hope to those in such desperate circumstances.

Ok. Change the names of the veggies to flowers and it works for me!

This old Homestead has been around since the late 1800s. Just the other day I discovered where they buried their glass jars and cans, a common practice before county trash collection. Besides fruit jars, I found old bleach and shoe polish bottles, and a Coca-Cola and ketchup bottle.

Three things come to mind.
1. I am grateful for trash day.
2. I will continue to not only reuse and recycle what I can, but invest in products that last longer.
3. It’s time to buy a bottle tree!

If you're looking for a quick and easy springtime bouquet for your home, here is an idea for you to try. Daffodils, forsythia and the tips of Chinese fringe flower branches in an old jar. It lifts my spirits on this gloomy day. Be sure to strip the lower flowers and leaves off the branches so as not to muddy the water. It also helps to change the water daily. Your arrangement will last longer.
