❗️Just a reminder. Cats particularly, outdoor ones during the cold winter season seek shelter and heat under cars or vehicle hoods to keep them warm.

❕We have met cases which were very critical due to injuries obtained from the engine being started or cats which were run over accidentally.
Some strays met their demise because of this. For your information, the rotating fan belts can kill an animal.

💢So please, to avoid injuring a cat during the harsh cold months, look around and peek under your car, bang or knock the hood to allow any cat to escape from danger. You can also beep your horn to warn them.

❄️Warmth is something cats love to seek. Doing these measures can avoid damage to your car but most importantly it can save a life.

Pyometra is a bacterial infection of the uterus.
It affects intact female animals. There are two types of pyometra that can affect cats, these are open and closed.

⬛ The infection can be severe, uncontrolled inflammation also turns into a life-threatening case.

⬛Pyometra is a medical emergency and the usual treatment is surgery (ovariohysterectomy)

In this case, the cat was stabilized before the surgery was done. Blood tests were also run before the procedure.

⬛The most common clinical signs in dogs and cats are:

depression
lethargy
anorexia
repetitive water intake
pale mucous membranes
vaginal discharge with pus or blood

Other signs: vomiting, excessive urination.

🔴The best prevention for pyometra is spaying which removes the hormones that stimulates the heat cycle.

⭕️The pet has already been returned for a follow up, immunization and is doing very well.

🐾Toxoplasmosis is a disease which is notorious alongside cats but also greatly misunderstood.

Not all cats have toxo!

🔴Toxoplasma gondii is a microscopic coccidian parasite that survives in water, soil, raw meat, mammals, but lives longest in cats.

⚫Cats however, do not contract the disease by physical contact but through swallowing the parasite usually from raw or uncooked meat.

🔴Animals or humans who are immunocompromised face more risks from toxoplasmosis.

⚫Diagnostic test looks for two types of toxo antibodies in cat’s blood.
One shows that the cat has contracted infection before and has become immune from it while the other shows active infection.

*Infection in cats is prevalent among outdoor cats who hunt or feed on undercooked meat.
If you have adopted or sheltered an outdoor cat with unknown history, it is best to do screening before vaccinating them.

🔹What is SDMA?

▫️Symmetric dimethylarginine is a biomarker for kidney function that increases earlier than creatinine.

▫️SDMA improves early detection of impaired kidney function.

▫️Kidney disease is commonly found in aging cats and dogs.

▫️SDMA is more sensitive than BUN and CREA at detecting kidney diseases. SDMA elevations show up earlier in kidney disease than other markers of renal function.

▫️SDMA testing allows knowing patients with early kidney disease, before onset of any other clinical symptoms. The benefits of this test are early diagnosis and intervention.

🔴It is very important to screen cats before joining the household.

In our clinic, we currently have FIV/FELV Testing which can screen in 10 minutes.

Younger cats are susceptible ones to such diseases.

🔴FELINE LEUKEMIA is caused by a retrovirus and can be transmitted from one cat to another.
FELV can also transfer through grooming, sharing food and water bowl, mother and kitten and bite wounds. Meanwhile, FELINE IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS (FIV) weakens the immune system. Most cats with FIV do not go through a clinical stage. It is more commonly found in intact male cats who fight.

🔴FeLV and FIV cause a wide variety of symptoms in the cat; no two cases follow the same course. Veterinarians recommend FeLV/FIV testing in cats because it can serve as source of infection or agent for other diseases.

Depending on the reason for testing, a confirmed positive test result should only show an indication of viral infection. With proper care and management, positive cats can have meaningful lives.
