She sprawled out and rolled in the grass as soon as we put her in QT. She will get to meet the others in 14 days. She is estimated to be 16 years old, and a QH cross. Everyone welcome Birdie!

Got Mama Mona's feet done today. Our farrier did a wonderful job, considering the horrible condition they were in. This is years of neglect to her back feet. We have the vet coming out tomorrow to see how bad the damage is to her bones in her hooves as well as the joints in her pasterns. We will update everyone as soon as we know something. Please pray for good news!

We rescued the matriarch donkey, "Mama Mona", on Wednesday with the help of a wonderful organization (Peace for Ponies). It was then that we found out the jennys that were left behind were actually her babies from previous years! We knew we had to help them too, and bring them back together with their mama! Today we brought Big Sister, Dizzy, and Waffles home to their mama, Mona! She was so happy to see them and spent the rest of the afternoon grooming each of them. It was so wonderful to see them happy and together again. A great big thanks to Peace for Ponies and their supporters for helping to make this family reunion happen. These girls will be safe and loved from now on!

UPDATE ON CRICKET

So this was her eyes yesterday. We were concerned something was going on due to the redness and swelling she was showing after the full 7 days of her eye meds.

Sent pics to A&M, and they said go ahead and bring her in. Better safe than sorry, and there might be something brewing.

So late last night we made the drive to TAMU Equine Hospital and had her checked out. Thankfully the Ophthalmologist was on call, so she was able to be seen immediately.

Doc said she is actually doing good. There ARE some granular areas building from the healing process, but she doesn't see anything that really concerns her. Yes, there is redness and swelling, but she said that is pretty par for the course with this type of eye disease.

She prescribed her a new eye med that we will do 3x a day for 2 weeks. This new med should reduce a lot of the redness and swelling she has. She must also always wear a fly mask with UV protection during daylight hours for the remainder of her life. She is getting checked tomorrow at our regular vet as well, just to make sure everything is still good and progressing normally.

Cricket is still in good spirits, and is happy to be home and grazing ♥♥♥♥

Update on Cricket!

Pathology came back. And it is what we feared.

Bilateral Ocular Squamous Cell Carcinoma. :(

The docs were hoping they got it all within the margins they removed, but they did not. Hopefully the photodynamic therapy they did got the rest, but we won't know for a few months. It has NOT metastasized, thankfully. This is treatable, but will require her to be seen every couple of months to see how much has come back, and treat as needed.

We are still working on getting her to gain weight, and she is making slow but steady progress. She takes her meds like a champ and has a good appetite.

Thanks for the prayers and happy thoughts for our sweet Cricket.

If you would like to donate to her feed or supplements, you can Venmo @ Twistedspurfarmstead, or you can contact us and get info that way.

Cricket is home from Texas A&M Equine Hospital! We are waiting on pathology from the biopsies on both of her eyes. Early SCC, and they are hoping it was caught early enough and no further complications arise.

We have 7 days of eye meds, 3x a day. And pain/anti inflammatory meds for those 7 days as well. Her feed must be soaked at all times, and we must soak her chopped hay in order to make it easier to eat.

*Update*
We have found that soaked alfalfa hay is not quite palatable to her anymore (as A&M found out too). They recommended that we change her to soaked alfalfa cubes or pellets. She had diastemas in her mouth in 5 places that they cleaned out (they were packed with food and painful). They widened these to keep food from getting packed in again, but all of her food must be easy to eat from now on.

If anyone would like to donate to her feed and pelleted hay fund, we would be extremely grateful!

You can send donations to our venmo or PayPal. We have Cricket on the road to recovery!

Also, we will be accepting donations for hay and senior feed through our Venmo account.

We have 5 seniors now, and we want to be well prepared for winter, just in case it is anything like last winter! All money goes to:
*Round coastal bales
*Bags of Senior Horse Feed
*Bags of chopped Alfalfa (easier for seniors to eat, and less stalks)

**If you would prefer to order the feed and chopped hay direct from the feed store for us to pickup, we will gladly take donations that way. We are located in Buffalo, TX 75831. Anything will help!

We wanted to update everyone that Cricket (the direct ship mare from Bowie) will be going to Texas A&M Equine Ophthalmology tomorrow to find out what is going on with her eyes, and to check if anything else may be going on with her. We want Cricket to be happy and healthy for many years to come! Prayers are appreciated for our sweet Cricket. Will update when we find out more! ♥

~~~~~~~
We received a grim prognosis from our regular vet last month, but we want to be 10000% sure what is going on and what could be causing the issue with her eyes (swelling, bulging, redness, pain) and also for her to drop weight suddenly. We had her teeth done in October, and found out she is 22 years old. So her age is also something we have to be concerned about along with what is going on. She is such a sweet girl and we want the best for her. Y'all pray for good news for our sweet Crickey Bug!
Dentals done today for Don Diego and LJ! Poor Diego barely has top teeth from cribbing in his previous home, and he is also older than we thought (25-28ish). But now his teeth are much better and he will have an easier time chewing his mash! And Miss LJ is 19 like we thought, and her teeth and gums will do much better now! Thank you so much Kurstyn Adams Equine Dentistry!
$5 Friday!
We have decided to start $5 Friday in hopes that some of you would be willing to donate just $5 to go towards hay and feed for our wonderful rescue equines. We have a couple seniors and hard keepers that require feed all year round (Ichabod, Diego, etc). It's not difficult to go through a bag of feed in 2 days or less. Please consider donating even a small amount to help us keep these guys chubby and happy!
We are also looking into making a trip to Fort Worth for some AlfaHay to keep on hand, especially for the winter time. Please feel free to donate or share :) Every little bit helps!
Twisted Spur E.R.R. welcomed "Cricket" on August 4th!
She was a direct ship horse from Bowie that was due to leave for Mexico the day we picked her up! (Direct ship horses are not listed online like other horses at Bowie. A wonderful woman let us know about her, and with lots of work and networking, we were able to bring her home!)
She is a total sweetheart and once she is fully settled and done with her quarantine, she can join the mare herd and also we will see what she knows under saddle!
Everyone welcome Cricket!
We welcomed "Spoons" home on Tuesday!
She had bagged up and was leaking a clear fluid from her teats, so we made her an appointment to see our wonderful Vet.
So, she isn't pregnant. But she does have Endometritis. Doc J called his buddy who is an Equine Reproductive specialist, and he confirmed the possibility of Endometritis along with "urine pooling", or....cancer :( So we will be watching her closely and doing a new ultrasound in a few months to see how she is doing. Time will tell the tale.
She has a clean bill of health other than that, and she will remain with us for however many years she has left. We love this beautiful girl to pieces, and she deserves to live out her life being loved on!
Donut is beginning to feel better with her "shipping fever" now treated and she is done with her meds. Her appetite is fantastic, so that is a huge relief to us. She is such a character and her personality is beginning to shine! She will neigh when she sees us, and is a real silly girl. She loves to give us full body rubs with her head (when she doesn't almost knock us over!) And enjoys being scratched between the ears. She is such a sweet girl!
Donut still has a long road getting her back to proper weight. She needs her teeth floated, and we would like to continue with the current supplements we are giving her. Please help us help her! Please donate or share!
"Donut" the 20 year old mare and "Phyllis" the club-footed donkey are home safe!
We are working on a fundraiser to recoup some of the funds we used to get "Donut" safe out of our veterinary fund, and also we need a little extra to help out Phyllis, the club footed donkey, because she has a major skin infection from the poor conditions she was in before we picked her up.
PLEASE consider donating to our current fundraiser, or sharing if you cannot donate. Even $5 helps! Thank you!!
"Donut" is on her way home!
We still need a huge push to get the final 🥕2🥕8🥕7🥕 carrots for this girl.
We would like to put the money back in our veterinary fund where it came from. But we had to get her out of there! She was dropping weight, getting beat up, and needs her feet done in the worst way.
This girl is going to need some work getting her healthy and back to proper weight. Please help us help her!
Update :)
While we have not received any donations, we are still going to go ahead and get the new pasture fenced in so we can help a couple more horses in need.
Had a pregnancy test done on 2 of the mares (Ouijie and Mayday). Neither girl is pregnant! Mayday looks great and Ouijie is just a little chubby! 🤣 So no babies for these 2 gals!
Everyone else is happy and healthy and doing fantastic. Everyone got hooves trimmed last week and today is worming day!
If anyone would care to donate, even $5, you can find our PayPal donate link and Venmo on previous posts.
Have a happy week, everyone!
Hey folks! Just checking in to let everyone know the horses are doing good. Shrimp has gotten a strange fungal infection under his huge, heavy forelock. But with rain and heat here in Texas, it was just a recipe for disaster with his thick, curly mane and forelock. Thankfully, he has no other issues with his skin anywhere else. So we are treating the infection under his forelock (he looks like a unicorn right now with how I braided his forelock back and out of the way). We are doing our best to keep him from being too itchy and taking out fence posts with his scratching, LOL.
We have received only $13 in donations this year. That's right, $13. So any little bit will help! Even $5! We cover everything upfront ourselves, so if we get help, we can help more horses and get more things done a teeny bit faster 🙂 We love these horses and work hard to get them back to being happy, healthy horses! We have more dentals to get done, a new pasture to build, hay and grain that is a constant purchase, and the list goes on. Please help if you can ♥
Happy Monday folks!
Wanted to say hey and let everyone know all the horses are doing fantastic!
We could use a little help recouping some costs from castrations, dentals, and then 2 more needed dentals we would like to schedule soon. (LJ and Ichabod are next up!)
We've got $540 so far in castrations and dentals, and need $300 more for the next 2 dentals (So $840). We are also working on adding an additional pasture that we can break into 2 for additional horses that need our help. (This will be about $800 in materials, we do all the labor ourselves).
Any little bit helps! Even $5! We cover everything upfront ourselves, so if we get help, we can help more horses and get more things done a teeny bit faster :) We love these horses and work hard to get them back to being happy, healthy horses!
Lady Jane ("LJ") got her hooves done today! Still needs another trim or 2 to get the front hooves back to where they need to be. Back hooves weren't as bad, and will be perfect after the next trim. She will be trimmed again in about 30 days or so to get her back on track! Great big thanks to our wonderful farrier who takes such good care of our rescues!
