Have you ever watched a cartoon and wondered ”how did get to where it is today?” If so, this post is for you! This week as part of I’m going to talk about ✨the wonderful world of animation! ✨
Animation as we know it today got its start in the 1830s with the invention of devices like William George Horner’s Zoetrope; a spinning drum with a series of images that appear to move when you look at it through the slits on the side.
It wasn’t until 1906 however that hand-drawn animation as a film medium became a thing. A filmmaker named J Stuart Blackton created a series of short animated films called “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces” and the medium of animation was born!
So how does our friend Mickey Mouse fit into all this?
Well, we wouldn’t have the Mouse if it weren’t for a little black cat named Felix. An animator named Otto Messmer invented Felix the Cat who’s expressive face and rubber ball body with limbs was not only easy to draw, but he was also incredibly popular. Walt Disney, who, at the time was working at his Laugh-O-Gram studio in Kansas noticed this and created his own character, Julius the Cat, which was essentially a copy of Felix. Disney eventually abandoned Julius for a more original character called. “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.” Eventually Walt Disney ended up losing the rights to Oswald, so Walt ended up just changing the ears and Mickey Mouse was born!
So how do you make an animation?
Originally, animation was done by showing a series of drawing and playing them at a speed that would register the drawings as movement. If you’ve ever made a flipbook, its the same principle. Nowadays animation has spread into more styles like CG animation. Artists will model a character in 3D on the computer, give it a “skeleton,” and an animator will move that skeleton around to make that character move!
Animation is such a cool topic that I had a hard time covering in one instagram post, but if you have any questions feel free to ask! I’ve worked in animation for while now and its a very cool job!
