Motivation is one of the most powerful tools in dog training! 🐶⁠ ⁠ Fear and seeking are two opposing emotional systems in a dog’s brain, and understanding this balance (look up Blue Ribbon emotions for further reading) can transform training. When fear dominates, a dog may freeze or avoid challenges. But when the SEEKING system is activated—through motivation like toys, treats, or play—it can helps shift a dog out of negative emotional states (like fear or panic) and into play, curiosity, and other goal-driven behaviours. ⁠ ⁠ We can activate the SEEKING system in three key ways:⁠ ⁠ 1️⃣ Creating desire for something rewarding (like a toy or treat)⁠ 2️⃣ Building expectation of a positive outcome⁠ 3️⃣ Introducing safe, non-threatening novelty to spark curiosity⁠ ⁠ When a dog’s drive is strong enough, it can override hesitation or fear, allowing them to tackle new obstacles and challenges with confidence.
