Are 67 dog breeds really about to be banned in the UK and what does it have to do with the latest controversy surrounding Crufts and the Kennel Club?
You’ve probably seen the headlines, but they’re not telling the full story.
In this video, we break down where the “67 breeds” claim actually came from and why it’s causing so much confusion. The truth is, there’s no official government list of banned breeds. Instead, the number comes from a welfare assessment tool created by the UK’s All-Party Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare.
So how did a health checklist turn into panic about banned pets? We explain how certain traits (like flat faces or short legs) got misinterpreted and why familiar breeds like corgis, dachshunds, and border collies ended up in the headlines. Along with a small Irish Glenn of Immal Terrier, which set warning bells off at Skooldoggery HQ.
If you’re a dog owner or just love dogs, this is something you need to understand.

Accusations of dog abuse at crufts are nothing new and this year they seem to have almost leaned in and said ‘yeah we know and we just don’t care’
Respected British trainers like Victoria Stilwell are starting to speak out against crufts and asking us all to hold them to a higher standard.
This years best in show was a Clumber Spaniel named Bruin, owned and trained by Lee Cox and both of these individuals have their problems
Lee Cox was convicted of dog abuse in 2001 after letting an old stud dog live in terrible conditions.
Think about that for a second. He used the dog up then discarded it with no care for its wellbeing.
This is the person crufts have rewarded with national media attention.
Then there is his dog where we can see he has learnt nothing from his past.
Take a look at Bruin’s eyes as they appear to be very exaggerated and you can see the skin drooping away at the bottom. This breed are notorious for health problems.
Bruin is the latest in a long line of examples of crufts winning dogs that appear to have genetic deformities though. These are caused by pure bloodline breeding practices crufts has endorsed for years. Our youtube channel has our short documentary showing how they have been doing this for decades and only every change if enough people challenge them.

Crufts holds itself up as the worlds most famous dog show and should therefore be the biggest advocates for healthy dogs. But their obsession with purebreeds and questionable backstage conditions that the dogs are kept in, show that more change is desperately needed for the sake of the dogs.

The show is no stranger to controversy. It has attracted criticism from some viewers over its format and production approach to using off camera trainers.

The Kennel Club is in the headlines again so we thought we should share a look into the BBC documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed.

Dogs have been bred for centuries for traits we like — curly coats, flat faces, extravagant tails. But those looks often come at a terrible cost including inbreeding and being encouraged to cull puppies. In 2008, the BBC documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed blew the lid off the world of pedigree breeding, exposing the dark side of the Kennel Club’s flagship show, Crufts.

Amazon and Ring love to market doorbell cameras as a way to help you find a missing dog. Their Super Bowl ad has been seen by millions worldwide.
Having footage can help after the fact. But a camera doesn’t stop your dog from bolting out the door in the first place. It just gives you a nice little movie of it to watch later.
Add to that the surveillance worries that feed into the big tech companies, and you've got thousands of reasons to train your dog instead of using the doorbell as a leash.

We’re writing a book and need your help!
This extract is from our upcoming puppy training book and we’re looking for feedback. Not just about writing style, but what would you want to see in a dog training book in 2026? What are the challenges new dog owners should know about?
This section is towards the beginning of the book and covers our decision to get a dog. Our plans for kids got put on hold because of my wife’s two cancers, but Freddie has more than filled that void 🙂

Ever noticed how your dog turns into a complete moron the moment it snows?
You imagine peaceful winter strolls…
soft snow… crisp air… Insta-worthy vibes.
Your dog? Though Absolutely does not agree
They’re sliding, spinning, and eating snow like it owes them money.
Instead of calm, they become tiny furry cannonballs,
pinballing off trees, legs, and whatever is left of your dignity.
So Here’s the science explaininy bit.
Cold air makes smells weaker, so instead of smells spreading out they hang low to the ground.
dogs sniff harder and shove their noses straight into the snow to get any whiff they can. They are used to the world stinking to high heaven and get surprised when it doesn’t.
The incessant sniffing freezes their nose so much that tiny ice crystals can form inside their nostrils.
Yes. Frozen nostrils.
That’s why the brain switches off and chaos begins.
You can’t really stop it…
but winter does come with real risks that you can do something about

Thinking of getting a dog? Let’s talk about money… 💸🐶

Having a dog is amazing. They’re loyal, hilarious, and somehow manage to steal your heart and your sofa. But one thing people massively underestimate is just how expensive dogs really are.

It’s not just “a £2 bag of food from the shop.” If you want to be a responsible dog owner and give your dog a good life (not just feeding them glorified sawdust), the costs add up FAST.

Before our dog Freddie even came home, we spent well over £200 on the basics:
• Food & water bowls
• Crate + bedding
• Toys (that will be destroyed)
• Collar, lead, harness, stair gate
• Treats, poo bags (forever), enzyme spray
• Insurance
• Food

And that’s before you even get into:
💉 Vet visits & vaccinations
📍 Microchipping
🥩 Ongoing quality food & treats
🧸 Replacing chewed beds and toys
🏥 Surprise vet trips (£40 minimum, even when it’s just a whisker)
✂️ Neutering (~£200)
🐕 Daycare (if you’re lucky enough to find a good one)

By the time you add it all up, you’re looking at around £500 just to get started, and that’s not including the dog itself.

I’m not saying this to put anyone off. Dogs are 100% worth it. But too many people jump in without realising the financial commitment, and that’s not fair on the dog.

If you get it right, you don’t just get a pet — you get a best friend.
And honestly? I don’t care how much Freddie costs me… but my wallet definitely notices 😅

🐾 Moral of the story: Dogs are incredible. Dogs are expensive. Be prepared.

Is it ok to hug your dog?
Yes, but don’t make them feel restricted. If you hug a puppy and it squirms, let them get away. Forcing them into uncomfortable situation’s won’t make them love you more, they will learn they can’t trust or depend on you.
But if they push themselves into you like Freddie does here, that’s a dog that wants some contact and affection ☺️
