Let’s chat about canines!

There is a common misconception that canines and wolf teeth are the same, but they are not. Wolf teeth are the first premolar (‘05 teeth for those who read my charts; canines are ‘04) and if present are most commonly extracted during casteration or before the horse is asked to carry a bit.

The canines are oftentimes the most neglected teeth in the horse’s mouth. If left untouched, the canines can cause tongue irritation. I’ve posted some profound before and after pictures with untouched canines.

What a difference.!.!…and to think it could have been different with yearly dental maintenance!

Preserve the mouth with good equine dentistry yearly starting at a young age - to keep them eating well into old age! 🙌🏼

🛑 If your older horse has not been checked in a while it’s a good time to have it done, before the cold months ahead!
A balanced mouth will allow for proper grinding of food, therefore allowing the system to utilize it once it gets to the gut without having to over work. This will help keep weight on them and body warmth in the cold temps!

Cattle and camels both benefit from routine floats as well as other grazing animals. It is great to see cross species dental care is being acknowledged 🐮🐪

We have been treating a number of ponies and miniature breeds recently, so thought we would share an interesting case each week in August
Did you know that because of the size of their heads and comparatively large size of their teeth, ponies and miniature breeds are prone to a number of dental conditions, such as overcrowding and tooth root infections?
Check out this skull from a young miniature pony with some of the outer bone removed, showing the size of the teeth compared to the size of the head.
