This beautiful girl found a guardian home! We're excited for the family and excited to add her to our program. I sent off her genetic testing 2 weeks ago and I'll have the results the beginning of June. I'm excited to see this girl grow and blossom into a beautiful dog. She's so incredibly sweet! She'll be a mini, she's tiny like her mom. Her AKC name is Figgy Pudding to add to our Christmas kennel name but her new family can call her whatever they want. She'll go with them in 6 more weeks. We like to keep the pups we hold back until they're 12 weeks old.

17 more days until Holly has puppies and 18 more days for chestnut! I'm excited!!! This was Dashers first time being a stud and I'm thrilled to have him proven!

I've been terrible at updating this page. My main focus has been on the Utah Dachshund Group.

Updates.

Holly and Chessnut have 3 weeks to go until their due dates. They had an ultrasound yesterday and Holly is expecting 3 pups and Chessnut is expecting 5. "Give or take".

Dasher has passed his Genetic testing, OFA cardiac and patellas and his PinnHip testing so he's officially listed and being offered as an AKC stud.

We finally came up with a permanent kennel name.
*Holly Jolly Dachshunds *

Our furst Dachshund was Holly and we got her on Christmas Eve. We've name all of our dachshunds Christmas themed names since then so we figured our kennel name should have a Christmas name as well.

We're currently working on a logo which I'm super excited about! I can't wait to see the finished product.

I run my own pregnancy tests on my females and I wish I would have taken a video on the process to show you the process but maybe next time.

Dogs don't have the same pregnancy hormone as humans. Human placentas produce hcg and puppy (and kitten) placentas produce relaxin. You can't test for relaxin with a urine test, serum is needed and in order to get serum you need to draw blood and centrifuge it OR put it in vials that have serum separator gel OR just let it sit for about two hours and it'll just separate on its own. I just let ours separate on its own since I just ordered centrifuge machine tonight.
I use 25 gauge needles to draw with which is the smallest for drawing blood and our girls don't even flinch.

Once the blood has separated I draw up the serum and put a few drops into the cassette that tests for the relaxin hormone.

💜💜💜Both Chessnut and Holly💜💜💜 are expecting! Their due dates are April 13th and 14th.
*A dachshunds gestation is between 60-65 days and we couldn't be more excited! Dasher is the sire! He's now a proven stud.

The line above the "T" is the positive result. A smidgen of whole blood found its way into the syringe so that's the red you see.

***Is drawing blood on a dog hard?***
-No, unless your dog is skiddish or nervous then they may squirm. My dachshunds have tiny little legs so I have someone hold them and support their leg while I draw, It just makes the process easier for me. The bigger dogs I've done in the past were easier to do since... well, everything is just bigger. Their leg is easier to hold and veins are bigger and easier to see and feel.

Let's talk about CDDY/IVDD.

IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) is the condition and the gene mutation (CDDY) is what increases the risk of the condition. Some Dogs that are most at risk for developing IVDD are dachshunds, beagles, basset hounds. Cocker spaniels and Shih Tzus. (chondrodystrophic breeds)
The CDDY gene is what gives dachshunds the shorter legs. As dachshunds develop, the growing tips of their limb bones harden early, stunting their growth and leading to a type of dwarfism called chondrodysplasia.

Signs that your dachshund may be developing IVDD.

Holding the neck low.
Unable to fully lifted the head.
Neck or back pain.
Weak, uncoordinated movement within four limbs or hind limbs.
Limping on one or both front limbs.
Urinary incontinence.
Panting or shivering.
Paralysis in four limbs or difficulty breathing

How to minimize the chances of your pooch developing IVDD.
*The single best thing that you, as a Dachshund owner, can do to prevent problems associated with IVDD is to control your dog's activity. Ideally, every Dachshund should avoid high-impact activities, especially jumping, high-speed running, and any activity that will put excessive force on the spine. Managing a health weight is crucial as well.

How is IVDD treated?
If the condition is caught early steroid and anti-inflammatory medications (to help reduce pain and swelling) can help combined with strict crate rest for approximately 4 -6 weeks. In severe cases IVDD surgery is needed to remove the diseased intervertebral disk material in order to relieve the pressure on the dog's spinal cord and to restore normal blood flow.

Most dachshunds have at least one copy of CDDY, some have two and less than 2% don't have any copies. Having two copies of CDDY will not increase your dogs chances of developing IVDD more than they would if they only had one copy.

Dasher is CDDY clear which means he doesn't carry the CDDY gene but two of our females do carry a copy.

When looking for a dachshund pup it's important to ask your breeder about health testing, genetic testing alone simply isn't enough. Cardiac, hips and patellas should also be done. Hearing and a few other tests would be great to get done as well. If the breeders say both of their dogs carry the CDDY gene don't be alarmed, it extremely common in dachshunds. Just know how to help minimize your dog developing IVDD.

*The gene is called CDDY and the condition is called IVDD.*

Feel free to add anything if I missed something.

Dasher goes in for his PinnHip testing in less than two weeks. I'm extremely excited about this new stud of ours. He'll be getting hips, patellas, cardiac testing done as well as a semen analysis.
Two of our females came into heat last week and we went ahead and decided to use him for these two particular girls despite not having his PinnHip done yet. We felt comfortable with it since he's genetically clear as well as our females. We will not be offering him up for stud services until his PinnHip results come back. I wish my girls would uave waited a few weeks to go into heat, but nature had other plans.

Also, in other news we're in contact with a few breeders in Michigan and we'll be hopefully adding a cream male and female to our program by summer. 🤞

Our stud Dasher cleared his genetics, the biggest and most exciting part was him being clear of CDDY and PRA! This is extremely exciting as about 98% of dachshunds carry at least one copy of CCDY and half have at least one copy of PRA and MANY have both copies of both PRA and CDDY. We're trying to breed this out of our lines.
Two of our females are currently in heat and have been bred with Dasher so we can get him proven as a stud, this will be his first litter. Typically we wait for OFA or Pinnhip tests (they're being done in 2 weeks) but out females decide to go into heat a little early. The vet gave the green light to go ahead and use him for our own girls until the PinnHip tests come back... then we can offer him as a stud to other breeders.
Dasher is AKC, 15 lbs, long hair piebald with ticking. He has the BEST personality and he can tie naturally and has given several AI samples (Artificial insemination) is something we'll be offering.
His PinnHip tests will test his patellas, hips and cardiac. He'll also be getting a semen analysis done the same day.

We should have 2 litters of dachshunds by the second week of April.

This beautiful long hair silver dapple will be joining our breeding program (granted she clears her testing). We're hoping to find a guardian home for her, or we'll just have to keep her ourselves. We'll be using Dasher, our AKC piebald to breed woth her down the road. He's still a pup himself so this is a ways out. I'm excited to see them grow up.

This is why we never remove dew claws. An old vet years ago told me it would cause issues in dogs down the road. Low and behold, more studies are coming out with new information that supports what he told me.

Do the Dew(claws)? M. Christine Zink DVM, PhD, DACVSMR I am a vet that works exclusively with performance dogs, developing rehabilitation programs for injured dogs or dogs that have had surgery as a result of performance-related injuries. I have seen many dogs now, especially field trial/hunt test and agility dogs, that have had chronic carpal arthritis, frequently so severe that they have to be retired or at least carefully managed for the rest of their careers. Of the over 30 dogs I have seen with carpal arthritis, only one has had dewclaws. The others have all had them removed. If you look at an anatomy book (Miller’s Guide to the Anatomy of Dogs is an excellent one – see figure below) you will see that there are 5 tendons attached to the dewclaw. Of course, at the other end of a tendon is a muscle, and that means that if you cut off the dew claws, there are 5 muscle bundles that will become atrophied from disuse. Those muscles indicate that the dewclaws have a function. That function is to prevent torque on the leg. Each time the foot lands on the ground, particularly when the dog is cantering or galloping, the dewclaw is in touch with the ground. If the dog then needs to turn, the dewclaw digs into the ground to support the lower leg and prevent torque. If the dog doesn’t have a dewclaw, the leg twists. A lifetime of that and the result can be carpal arthritis. Remember: the dog is doing the activity regardless, and the pressures on the leg have to go somewhere. They can be absorbed by the dewclaw, or they will move up and down the leg to the toes, carpus, elbow, and shoulders. Perhaps you are thinking, “I never have had one of my dogs have carpal pain or arthritis.” Well, we need to remember that dogs, by their very nature, do not tell us about mild to moderate pain. If a dog was to be asked by an emergency room nurse to give the level of his pain on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being the worst, their scale would be 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Most of our dogs, especially if they deal with pain that is of gradual onset, just deal with it and don’t complain unless it is excruciating. But when I palpate the carpal joints of older dogs without dewclaws, I almost always elicit pain with relatively minimal manipulation. As to the possibility of injuries to dew claws. Most veterinarians will say that such injuries actually are not very common at all. And if they do occur, then they are dealt with like any other injury. In my opinion, it is far better to deal with an injury than to cut the dew claws off of all dogs “just in case.” Anatomical diagram viewing the medial side of a dog’s left front leg demonstrating the five tendons that attach to the dewclaw.
