We understand how concerning this can be, but fear not โ€“ there are ways we can support our cats and help them feel more comfortable in their environment.

Excessive vocalization or withdrawal in cats can be attributed to various factors, including stress, fear, illness, or changes in their surroundings. Cats are sensitive creatures, and sudden disruptions to their routine or environment can trigger these behaviors.

But fret not! Here's how we can help our beloved felines:
1๏ธโƒฃ Create a Safe Haven: Provide your cat with a quiet, secluded space where they can retreat and feel secure. This could be a cozy corner with their favorite blankets or a secluded spot in a room away from noisy areas.
2๏ธโƒฃ Routine and Stability: Cats thrive on routine and stability, so try to maintain a consistent schedule for feeding, playtime, and cuddles. Predictability can help alleviate stress and anxiety in cats.
3๏ธโƒฃ Enrichment and Play: Engage your cat in interactive play sessions and provide plenty of environmental enrichment to keep their minds stimulated and their spirits high. Puzzle feeders, cat trees, and toys can provide mental and physical stimulation, reducing boredom and anxiety.

Remember, patience and understanding are key when it comes to helping our cats overcome behavioral challenges.

Let's work together to ensure our feline friends feel loved, safe, and happy in their homes. ๐ŸŒŸ

We understand how distressing this can be for both you and your pup, but there's hope and help available.

Separation anxiety in dogs often stems from a deep bond with their humans. When left alone, they may experience fear or distress, leading to behaviors like excessive barking as a way to cope with their emotions.
But fear not! There are several ways we can support our dogs and help them overcome separation anxiety:

1๏ธโƒฃ Gradual Desensitization: Start by gradually exposing your dog to short periods of alone time, gradually increasing the duration as they become more comfortable.
2๏ธโƒฃ Create a Safe Space: Provide your dog with a cozy den or safe space filled with comforting items like blankets and toys to help them feel secure when you're not around.
3๏ธโƒฃ Exercise and Mental Stimulation: Regular exercise and mental stimulation can help reduce anxiety levels in dogs, making them less likely to engage in excessive barking.

We are nearing that time of the year again, New Year's Eve. For many people, this is cause for great celebration; out with the old and in with the new, with the crackle and bang of an overhead firework display often considered as the highlight of the night. โ€‹

โ€‹

Unfortunately, for pets and their guardians, this day can be riddled with stress and anxiety. In fact, in a recent research study, it was reported that 52% of dog owners said that their pet was fearful of fireworks, displaying behaviours such as trembling, excessive panting, and running away or hiding. โ€‹

โ€‹

New Year's Eve and the celebrations that accompany this day, don't just affect companion animals but all animals alike, even those found in the wild. The loud bangs and flashing lights is the cause of many animal injuries and deaths during the festive season. โ€‹

Should you notice that your pet is fearful of loud noises, it's best to contact a CAPBT or COAPE Qualified Behaviourist who will be able to assist in creating a step-by-step action plan. โ€‹

It's the season for celebrations, but please remember that animals can find loud sounds, fireworks and new visitors stressful.

Help them keep calm this festive season with CalmEze Plus.

CalmEze Plus can be given either Short-term / once-off treatment - at least 1.5 hours before the stressful event like a vet or parlor visit or fireworks; or it can be given as an ongoing long-term treatment to assist with the treatment of behavioral problems or with the daily occurrence of highveld thunderstorms.

For long-term treatment we suggest giving twice daily (mornings and evenings) as CalmEze Plus generally works for 12 hours for the first 3 days, whereafter you can either give half the dose twice daily or the full dose once daily. This will ensure that your pet is covered for the whole day should you be unsure when a thunderstorm is expected.

We are once again approaching the crazy season of the year and thought to just do a reminder on all the festive dates that might cause anxiety and fear in pets.

Please also be sure to prepare for the Diwali festivals starting this weekend.

Please remember to give CalmEze Plus at least 2 hours before the fireworks start for best results. The aim is to prohibit adrenaline and cortisol is secretion into the bloodstream and this can only occur before a stressful event.

CalmEze Plus is also very safe and dosage can be increased or repeated if you have a pet a bit more highly strung and needs a bit more to calm them.

Some other pointers to keep pets safe this fireworks and thunderstorms season:
โ€ข Keep pets in a well-lit room.
โ€ข Keep all curtains drawn to shelter them from any flashing lights or lightning.
โ€ข Play music loudly enough to drown out the sound of the thunder or fireworks.
โ€ข Sit with your pets but try to carry on normally. They can sense when you become tense.

Additional things to remember:
โ€ข Please remember to place a tag on your petโ€™s collar to ensure youโ€™re easily reached if they accidentally escape the yard.
โ€ข Microchipping your pet will ensure that you get contacted should your pet end up at a veterinary practice or shelter.
โ€ข Please ensure all escape routes are properly closed off and that anxious pets are under constant supervision by someone.

Hope you all have safe and joyful festive season!

Cat Years To Human Years: A Guide To Calculating Your Cat's Age...

Youโ€™ve probably heard that one dog year is equivalent to seven human years, but is the formula really that simple? The conversion formula for both dog and cat years to human years is actually much more complex. Because both of these animals mature at a faster rate than humans, the first years of your petโ€™s life actually equate to more human years than the subsequent years. To get a better idea of how cat and human ages equate, use our cat age calculator:

International Cat Day

International Cat Day is a celebration which takes place on 8 August of every year. It was created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare. It is a day to raise awareness for cats and learn about ways to help and protect them.

Well, it is not surprising, Cats are one of the coolest beings on the planet: they are independent, inquisitive, adventurous, have an amazing physiognomy, and the power to heal by themselves โ€” at least most of the time.

The first historical human record about cats could be found in Ancient Egyptian Civilizationโ€™s culture. We all seem to relate cats with Egyptians, because of their adoration and consideration of cats as gods. Mafdet was the first known cat deity and was regarded as the protector against snakes, scorpions, and evil during the First Dynasty, so for them, cats were not just deities, but also protectors.

Fleas, a Source of Torment for your Cat

A Dangerous Parasite That's Built for Action!
Fleas are the most common of all external feline parasites, and the consequences of infestation will be terribly uncomfortable for most cats and can be the source of deadly disease for some. Flea bites cause horrible itching, and a hypersensitive cat's incessant scratching may open wounds in the skin that are vulnerable to serious infection. Indeed, these tiny, wingless creatures often carry infectious agents themselves - such as dog and cat tapeworm and the bacteria that causes cat-scratch disease in people.

There are only two ways to counter flea infestation: You must rid your cat of the insects, and you must also get them out of the environment where your cat spends time - your home and outdoor property if your cat or his animal roommate is allowed to wander outside. Ridding the environment of fleas requires meticulous vacuuming, the use of flea-killing products, and perhaps even the services of a professional exterminator.

Products have been developed in the last six or seven years that are very effective. Some of them contain flea preventives that circulate in the blood. Others are designed to sort of wrap the animal in an insecticide. You have to be very careful to read the label, however, since some of these substances are fine for dogs, but they can be toxic to cats. In fact, if you put it on a dog and let a cat lick the medication off while it's wet, it can kill the cat."

f you use one of these products faithfully - beginning in the spring of the year and going into the fall before colder weather sets in, your animal is very likely to remain free of fleas.

Just putting one of these applications on your animal isn't enough. You've waited too long, and the amount of effort and expense involved in getting the condition under control is apt to be humongous.

The Cat Death
Cats are rumored to be the source of the Black Death so all over Europe thousands of street- and house cats are slain.

What is the black plague?
The black plague, also known as the black death, is a disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. It enters the body through the skin and travels via the lymph system. The bacteria live in the digestive tracts of fleas. The fleas, of course, live off blood from a host, and when the fleas swallow the blood, it becomes infected with the bacteria. An intestinal blockage forms as the bacteria multiply inside the flea, starving the parasite because nutrients cannot be absorbed. The flea vomits in an effort to clear the blockage, and since the flea is starving, it feeds voraciously. When the infected flea vomits the diseased blood into a bite site on a host animal or human, the host becomes infected with the black plague.

From the middle of the 1300s until the 1700s, the black plague terrorized much of Europe and parts of Asia. Most historians believe the plague was first brought to Europe on ships from Asia.

Eventually, it was decided that the rats, not the cats, were responsible for spreading the black plague. Then, of course, everyone wanted to own a cat or two. And since cats are prolific breeders, it didnโ€™t take long for the demand to be satisfied. The laws which had been the catsโ€™ death sentence were repealed. In many regions, a new law took its place โ€“ one that protected felines instead of banning them and almost causing their extinction in Europe.
