Time flies! It's been a while since I've written one of these. Here are my latest musings, from a day when I accidentally changed my mental narrative in hopes of helping to illustrate a point for a student... and wound up discovering how much of an effect our thoughts and intention have while riding. Check it out here if you're interested:

One of my students had a really rough ride recently. We've all been there. Some days are just like that... we thought things were going OK, we thought we were improving in certain exercises, but then invariably our horse decides we need some humbling, and we have a ride where nothing works right. Th...

I love what Olympian Steffen Peters says in this video about how he visualizes before his competitions. He describes how he visualizes "to a level that's hard to explain", taking his mind through the entire ride in great detail, even down to how the arena smells. He says he "really think[s] that you create certain neural pathways in your brain and so that you're somewhat prepared when you go into the ring, that you're set up for a really really good experience."

Top athletes are great role models! It's clear that visualization is a powerful tool for Steffen and plays a role in his success. Hypno-Ride can help you tap into the benefits of visualization yourself. Learn more and check out our recordings at www.HypnoRide.com.

At the start of our lesson this week, she expressed some frustration that things only seemed to be working with the horse in one direction. When they tracked to....

DOES MENTAL DISTRACTION AFFECT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR HORSE?
Horses feel our stress, anxiety, and distraction and can become anxious themselves. When we aren't mentally focused, we also can't be effective leaders. Our communication isn't clear, and we may become more easily frustrated.

Our latest Hypno-Ride recording helps you let go of mental distractions before your barn time, so you can have more enjoyable and productive time with your horse. Available for $9.99 at www.HypnoRide.com.

I love what Amy Skinner Horsemanship says here about how "good riding requires that we re wire our natural instincts." Hypnotherapy is a great way to rewire our instincts, and our Hypno-Ride recordings are designed to help equestrians achieve all of the goals in Amy's insightful post 🙂

Check us out at www.hypnoride.com

Good riding requires that we re wire our natural instincts. When we get afraid, we tip forward, or clutch, or pull. We stop breathing, and somewhere deep down we hope the horse will adapt and take care of us. But a good steward takes responsibility: it is our duty to practice honing our reflexes. It is our job to practice controlling our position, our breath, and learning to create a productive mindset.

It is the hardest thing in the world to do to control our natural instincts- but it is the most important. And expecting the horse to adjust to us without the necessary skills is folly. Take the time, put the hours in, get a good coach and an appropriate horse, and master your body and mind.

I had a conversation last night with another local trainer about trainers who are harsh on students to the point that it shatters their students' confidence... And how we both feel its so important to build up confidence rather than tear it down. It pushed me to finally get around to posting something I had written a few weeks ago about that same topic:

I recently acquired a new student who has some self-admitted challenges with her confidence. One of the things she said in her first lesson with me was "I just don't want to ruin her". Apparently her former trainer had told her numerous times that she would "ruin" her horse if she didn't ride better...

I find myself coaching people on this idea a lot... when someone says "but maybe I'm not good enough to take her to her full potential. Maybe I should sell her to someone who can". Horses don't care about "reaching their potential". They don't sit in the field dreaming about going to the Olympics and then get disappointed when their rider isn't able to take them to that level. If you give your horse love and attention and good care and respect, you are doing great. Take the pressure off of yourself. Your horse is not disappointed in you.

Horses don’t understand human accomplishments. They would rather be eating grass in a safe paddock with their friends.

“Horses are made to be horses” ~ Franz Mairinger

Some days it's best not to ride. Horses are so sensitive to our mental states, that it just isn't fair to them to hop on and try to make them perform if we are full of stress, tension, and distraction that has nothing to do with them. That's just bound to lead to frustration in both horse and human.

Read the story of my adventures yesterday and my latest musings here:

Some days are a day not to ride. Our horses are so sensitive to our mental states that if we're mentally stressing or in emotional turmoil, it just isn't fair to them to climb on and make them deal with us in that state. We're not going to be riding our best and they're going to feel that we're stre...

I love this description that illustrates how powerful our mental state can be.

The Tranquilizing Rider

Once upon a time there was a rider at our farm, not technically well educated, didn’t ride with much style or what most deem “good posture”, but who had that “something” in his laid back personality that seemed able to snooze the most flighty horse.

We have that saying “electric seat” to describe riders who light up horses. This one had a “sedative seat,” like a walking bottle of Ace.
I think it is a combination of traits. One of which has to be an absence of competitive urgency. Another, no personal fear or anxiety, because horses pick up on nervous energy. Plus an elastic way of harmonizing his body movements to those of the horse.

It is a great ability to develop, and I think doing that is partly physical, but more so it’s the nurturing of an “I have all day” lack of needing the horse to conform to some human agenda.

You may have this ability, or you may know someone who does. How would YOU describe it? What does it take to become this rider?

I've been thinking a lot lately about accountability in riding. What do we hold ourselves and our horses accountable for? Is it a different level of performance that we expect from ourselves and our horses when we practice on our own vs. when our trainer is watching?
Read my latest musings here:

I've been thinking a lot about accountability. We often hold ourselves and our horses to a higher standard when our trainer is watching!

Yesterday was a confidence-building/desensitization day at the barn for horses and for humans! Listen to this video by Erica Bliss with the sound on to hear the sounds of the storm in the arena... that's what I was riding to all day, and I'll admit that I spooked myself a few times! It sounds like a giant is outside shaking the door, trying to get in! I think I'll have to do a Hypno-Ride session one of these days focused on riding through windstorms... Fortunately I have amazing horses in my program who for the most part did great with it. Also fortunately, I had lights for all of my rides... (Erica's lunging video is from after the power finally went out). Still SO loud though!
What are some of the craziest things you've ridden through??

This is so true! And this is the purpose of Hypno-Ride: to help us master our own minds. It can help us tackle unconscious negative thoughts or anxieties about our riding, creating more positive thoughts and emotions when we're with our horses. It can even help us "practice" riding a certain way through visualization, to improve our movements and behavior. Give it a try. Your horse will notice the difference in you. www.hypnoride.com.

I lost my momentum with Hypno-Ride while I've been focusing on finding a new home for my training program... But I'm ready to get going again, and I'm excited about our next recording plans!

This blog is so new that I'm sure I didn't have anyone wondering where I disappeared to for the past three months, but I really do intend to post to this regularly, so I feel bad for disappearing right after I got it up and running. My musings on the importance of community and being supportive to each other at horse shows: https://www.hypnoride.com/post/horse-show-musings

Today I judged a 4-H show. It was a lovely event. Perfect weather and wonderful horse and rider teams. I love horse shows. As any competitor knows, our time in the competition arena sometimes goes wonderfully, and the victory is the best feeling in the world, but sometimes it goes terribly. Horses a...
