Golden oysters are really picking up their output! I think I've finally got my fruiting room dialed in. Looking forward to black pearl oysters, pinks and blues soon!

One of my cute little babies.

This is a mushroom just starting to poke out of the column.

I've been going through a lot of trial and error experimentation to nail down my process for the fruiting tent. The first flush was mediocre; insufficient fresh air made the fruiting bodies small and wilted. I've switched to using a 5 min on / 10 min off cycle for the fans (as opposed to using a CO2 controller). Looking forward to seeing how the second flush turns out!

There are some king oyster mushrooms right behind this generation; hoping to see those fruiting soon.

My first foray into non-sterile, larger scale cultivation seems to be going alright. These columns are 4 days post-inoculation and seem to be colonizing well with no significant competing organisms.

I'm using the cold-water, high pH method of pasteurization, as opposed to the energy intensive heat sterilization I've used in the past. Yes, this method does use a lot of water (35 gals for about 15 lbs of substrate), but seems to be much more sensible than trying to sterilize this amount of substrate.

These columns are golden oyster on 100% straw. Tomorrow, I'll be preparing columns of king oysters on a mixture of straw and h**p, hoping to find more ways to incorporate the discards of other processes into new material for the mushrooms.

One Earth Mushroom Farm just inoculated their first batch! Looking forward to some blue oysters in 6ish weeks.

I've decided to name each batch based on what's happening in the heavens...this first batch is named Void Moon, which feels fitting for starting this project. "Initiatives begun now may not amount to much or they can be slow/hard going"...this speaks to my mindset: I have a lot to learn; these first bags may not amount to much but offer me invaluable lessons.

I'll keep you posted!

Harvested this Birch Polypore (Fomitopsis betulina) a few days ago. She's a bit beyond her prime, but had no bug holes and was pretty clean. I'm drying her out to make tea later. Very much looking forward to connecting with the fungi around Bennington throughout the year!

Joined for a quick beach cleanup today. Pretty incredible to see the endless amount of plastics in all forms that wash up on our beaches; unfortunately it's only the tip of the iceberg. If we want to solve this problem, we're going to have to tackle it from all sides: minimize the amount of plastics used in industry and at home, prevent plastics from hitting the streets, highways and trails, catch the plastics in our streams, and remove the ghost nets, derelict vessels and garbage patches from our oceans.

Innovators, inventors, investors, and creative types: let's think big and scale up the solutions.

Citizen scientists and anyone who doesn't like plastic in their food: connect with organizations like or to see how you can contribute. Everyone has ideas, time, energy, and other resources they can contribute. Join the fight to keep our planet, your fellow humans, the plants and animals healthy and happy.

With love,
Jared

The contaminated pink oysters I threw into the compost pile are fruiting! While this isn't a huge surprise to me, I'm curious how well they'll actually grow. It's so hot where I live; I'm guessing the fruiting bodies will be pretty small.
