May the 4th be with you! Have a great Thursday๐ฑ.
In April, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) began testing the efficacy of four vaccines against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Initial data from the single-dose trials are expected to be available this May, followed by results from the two-dose studies in June.
You can spot them a mile off!

Oh looky what we have here! The notorious bot fly. Evil thing. You can see how fast and annoying she is. Look how many eggs she laid in just the blink of an eye. (The little yellow seed looking things on the horse's legs). Look how troubled this poor horse is by her. We quickly sprayed her and the horse with fly spray and scraped off the eggs.
Tuesday tip
Backing up is a low-impact exercise with no moment of suspension. It can be done in-hand and ridden. You horse should move his limbs in diagonal pairs.
Performed well, it requires your horse to carry more weight on his hindquarters, and maintain increased hindlimb, lumbosacral and back joint flexion throughout the stride cycle.
Executed correctly with relaxation, impulsion and with the head lowered, the movement increases the throacic vertebral rotation, encourages core recruitment of the abdominals , thoracic sling and hip flexors. It also contributes to back mobility, the ability to collect and good posture.
For maximum benefit ask your horse to back up in-hand daily. Start with 1 or 2 steps and progress to 20 steps. The aim is good quality, long, marching steps.
November is National Pet Cancer Awareness Month. Pets today have a better chance of being successfully treated for neoplasia and cancer than they did before, thanks to advances in early recognition, diagnosis and treatment. And it all starts with regular check-ups with your veterinarian. Here are a few warning signs to know: http://bit.ly/2OenYrc
My own personal dog- history of a fractured right side atlas after getting his head shut under the recliner about a year ago. He could not move all 4 legs for months, then slowly recovered. He does have muscle atrophy and trips sometimes but is doing rather well. After this incident he constantly had muscle tremors in all 4, even while sleeping. As you can see, acupuncture brings him relief.
Owner noticed dog's foul breath for a week. She couldn't get a good look in her dog's mouth but thought it may be the mild tartar on the dog's teeth. By the end of the week, she couldn't stand the smell and brought her dog for me to look at. A strange object was seen in the roof of the mouth. Once pulled out, it was identified as 2 sticks. The owner stated the dog was playing fetch over 2 weeks ago! The dog never stopped eating normally. Dogs are amazing and thankfully this one will be fine in about 2 weeks to play fetch again, but maybe more careful next time.
It's a good time of year to be checking the goats. Biting lice are tiny and hard to see. They can easily hind in dandruff along the top line. Treatment includes applying a pyrethrin and treatment loafing areas. Treatment is important as these little guys can cause severe anemia and weight loss as well as stress from itching.
I'm sure you all know by now what this video is... heartworm microfilariae (baby heartworm) in a 1/4 of a drop of blood. Heartworm prevention is cheap and easy. It comes in injection, oral, and topical forms. In as little as 50 days post infection, heart and vascular damage is done.
Hmmm... something looks strange in this cat's f***l sample. We'd better apply a product such as Revolution or Bravecto and deworm with praziquantel (Drontal) for tape worms.
Today is and this year's theme is "One Health, Zero Death.โ Here are some key takeaways from our "Rabies in the US" infographic.

Peroneus tertius tear.
It is part of the reciprocal apparatus of the hindlimb, which means there is concurrent flexion and extension of the hock and stifle.
Lateral movements require your horse to move forwards and sideways.
He does this by:

๐ด Moving his legs out and away from his body in ๐ข๐ฃ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ค๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ
These are great gymnastic exercises that help to improve suppleness and are easily incorporated into your schooling sessions.

๐๐๐ญ - The ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ is the most important organ in your horse's body....and....
๐ It's the first organ to form in the embryo
๐ The heart is a hollow cone shaped muscle weighing abut 4.5kg
๐ Itโs situated between the lungs to the left of the chest within the protective walls of the ribcage
๐ As a horse gets fitter โ the size and weight of the heart may increase
๐ A wide chest allows more space for the heart and lungs which suggests greater athletic potential

ALERT โ๏ธโ๏ธ
The State Veterinarianโs office has confirmed two cases of Potomac horse fever. One is in Rutherford County and the other in Dekalb County.
Freshwater snails are the source of the bacteria that causes Potomac horse fever. Horses may be exposed when drinking from creeks or rivers, and can then suffer from colic, fever, and diarrhea. Potomac horse fever has not been found to directly transmit from horse to horse.
We urge horse owners to be sure their horses are protected by using best management practices, which includes consulting with your local veterinarian for appropriate vaccination needs and schedules.
โข Regularly disinfect stalls, water buckets, feed troughs, and other equipment
โข Eliminate standing water sources where disease-carrying insects may gather and breed
โข Avoid co-mingling your horses with other, unfamiliar horses
Potomac horse fever is NOT a known threat to human health.
Happy 4th of July. Thank you to all our military personnel past and present for the many sacrifices you and your family have made so we may be a free country.
As we enter a weekend of remembrance of those who have given their lives for the country, let us not forget the four-legged heroes who have also made the ultimate sacrifice. ๐บ๐ธ
