I can go home today!

I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me.

I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. A volunteer writes: Paprika is a lovely kitty who we can definitely see stretched out on the couch with her forever family. Gentle and tender hearted, Paprika appreciates a slower approach when meeting new people but come spend a little time with her and you will see what a loving and friendly girl she is. She particularly enjoys spending time with people and especially likes to be included in the conversation - speak softly to her and you will have a new best friend! Paprika will be a joy to come home to each day. Please check here for updated adoption hours.

Paprika 156201

Hello, my name is Paprika. My animal id is #156201. I am a desexed female patch tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/16/2022, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- death of owner.

Paprika is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to their stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...
My adoption fees are waived as part of the Senior Pet Month promo!

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/17/22
Hiding in den lying down looking through side entrance with neutral body and wide eyes. Sniffs treats offered in front of her but then hisses when reaching close to pet. Allows gentle petting on head and cheeks, then hisses when stroking body. Needs time to adjust.

10/18/22
Lying down hiding behind den staring at wall. Becomes alert and ignores treats offered. Allows gentle petting on head but flattens ears and tenses up. A little bit calmer today, no hissing, slight improvement with tolerating attention.

10/20/22
Crouched down in the den, hisses when making eye contact. Steps back when reaching close to offer dry and puree treat on the scratcher tool. Turns head away when placing puree on her lips and she lip licks. Eats some treat off her mouth but does not accept any more after licking the first spoonful clean. Has potential, but still shy.

10/22/22
crouching in den and looking out of den entrance when approached & spoken to. Ignored dry treats offered by scratcher, withdrew to back of den. Ignored squeeze up offered on scratcher. Left dry treats near entrance of den & left squeeze up on food tray.

10/24/22
At back of bottom cubby curled up in litter box. Immediately hisses when spoken to and opening the door. Ignores treats offered on scratcher tool. Steps back and hisses when pet on the head. Lip licks when stroking back and tenses up, uncomfortable with cheek rubs, tucks head down to neck. Tolerates attention but does not appreciate it. Kept interaction short to reduce stress and offered chicken filet at the front for her to enjoy later.

10/25/22
Hisses and retreats when opening the cubby door. Showed no interest for offered treats but accepted touch with the scratcher tool. She remained stiff and tense throughout the interaction.

10/31/22
Crouched down at back of top cubby, hisses when spoken to and opening the door. Sniffs treats offered on scratcher tool and later hisses again when briefly pet on head and body. Retreats to shelf to avoid attention and lip licks. At end of interaction, she returns back to the cubby and pokes her head out of the portal door.

11/1/22
Hisses, quickly retreats while attempting to pet with the scratcher tool. However, briefly allowed a stroke along the back while rushing away but turned around and hissed. When left alone she then ate her offered treats.

11/2/22
Crouched down at back of cubby, retreats to shelf when reaching close to offer treats on scratcher tool. Hisses and lip licks when reaching close again and retreats back to cubby. Consistently retreats and hisses with attention.

11/3/22
Resting in the cubby but once opening the cubby door she bolts out. Alert with eyes wide, avoiding contact. Left offered treats which she likes because when done with the interaction she goes and eats them.

*Enrichment notes continued in GAN*

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent,Shy ,Skittish,Timid

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Uncomfortable with pick up,New home adjustment period,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Tenses up, hisses, and tilts ears when picked up. Retreats to hide when placed back down.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Paprika is a shy, timid, and independent cat who has made slight improvements with tolerating attention and is a little less fearful, but she consistently attempts to retreat when reaching close to interact. She was at the front of the shelf sitting up with her head and ears forward, focused on the assessor with a neutral body and eyes. She accepts treats offered through the door, but when opening the door, she steps back and retreats to the top cubby and crouches down. When attempting to interact with her in the back of the cubby, Paprika gets up and returns to the shelf. The assessor is able to pet her head and body with a slower approach, but then she tenses up and tries to retreat to the top cubby again. Before she retreats, the assessor picks her up and she tilts her ears and hisses. After placing her back down, she retreats back into the top cubby to avoid attention.

Paprika interacts with the observer, tolerates attention and petting, but appears moderately/somewhat fearful or stressed in the shelter and she did not appear to like being picked up during the behavior evaluation. She tensed up, hissed, and tilted her ears when pick up was attempted. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any future home with children should be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking her up, especially while she is still adjusting to her new home. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.

‼️SENIOR IN NEED‼️

This pretty girl came into the shelter a while ago with lice, very thin, and severe uri. The shelter sent her to a foster to recover and she is now back in the general cat area for adoption. She does seem to have lingering affects from her uri and the shelter suspects she may have chronic uri. Persephone is 12 years old and she really deserves a chance to feel good and be loved.

Persephone needs an adopter who can care for her or a committed foster and pledges for a rescue to help. If you have any questions or can help please PM the page.

NEW PHOTOS - What my friends at ACC say about me:
I can go home today!
I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing.
I am looking for a home with a patient person.
I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.
I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.

Pretty Midi wants to spend her golden years in a cozy home!

13 year old Midi is an owner dump. She is already spayed and generally healthy. Midi is not a happy camper in the shelter and would love to meet a new furever friend who will give her a new home. Come meet her at MACC. What my friends at ACC say about me:

Hello, my name is Midi. My animal id is #154216. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 13 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/23/2022, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Midi is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to their stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Behavior History
Behavior Assessment
Midi was stressed upon intake. She hissed and remained in a tight body. The owner warned us endlessly about her being very feral and advised us to make the least amount of contact with her as possible. We set a feral den in front of her crate and she did not want to go inside. We ended up picking her up with cat gloves and placing her inside the feral den.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/1/22
Crouched down facing out toward me. Started growling a few seconds after I approached the door. Offered dry treats on scratcher. Sniffed and ignored. Left dry treats nearby in front of her. Offered Squeeze up on scratcher from a slight distance. Sniffed the air to find the squeeze up and then came up to the scratcher and ate squeeze up. approached a tiny bit closer with scratcher. swatted. Offered more squeeze up on scratcher from a slight distance. Came up to scratcher to eat squeeze up. repeat 2 or 3 times. (no growling) Left more squeeze up on a tray nearby.

10/2/22
Crouched down with rear facing the front. When spoken to and opening the door, she gets up and walks to the front. Midi eagerly accepts chicken fillet but pulls head back attempting to pet her head. She hisses at the environment and flicks her tail. When petting her cheeks, she sits up and bats the tool away. She curiously takes a few steps forward to explore. During pick up, she tenses up, lowers her body, growls, stress meows, and tries to squirm out of my hands. After placing her back down, begins to calm down and continues to appreciate more chicken as a reward for calm behavior.

10/3/22
At the front, sitting quietly shows interest in treats and sniffs them but when I go to pet her she hisses and attempts a swat. I offer catnip which she enjoys and she rubs it and when I attempt petting again with the scratching tool she growls/hisses and attempts to swat again.

10/5/22
Independent Lady! She was sitting upright by the front alert with soft eyes. Easily got annoyed when fixing her kennel card by the cage door and began to hiss and strike. Unable to interact and left offered treats.

10/6/22
At middle of kennel lying down in loaf position. Ignores treats offered and allows gentle petting on head with scratcher tool. Leans in hard and rolls over for cheek rubs, but gets easily overstimulated with the attention and nips the tool. I wait for her to calm down and she continues to tolerate petting on her head, but tenses up when reaching close to pet with my hand. When I stroke her back, she whines and quickly turns around to nip the tool, possible pet-induced aggression or sensitive to touch on her back.

10/7/22
Resting softly on top of the den on approach. Alert with soft eyes. When attempting to pet with the scratcher tool she hisses and swats with no claws. Midi escalates, growls and avoids contact.

10/11/22
Still very conflict. Hiding in den, walks out to greet me at the front. Very affectionate with scratcher tool; she head bunts for petting and leans in hard for cheek rubs. When stroking her back, she flicks her tail and looks back, then short-stress meows when receiving too much attention. Recovers fairly quickly and continues to appreciate petting with tool. Allows me to pet with my hand when leaning in, but once she looks up and sees my hand, she short-stress meows and tries to swat.

*Enrichment notes continued in GAN*

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Midi was on top of the den, curious, watchful, and alert with medium sized pupils, she sniffed treats but couldn't be coaxed off the den, allows cheek and head rubbing, pushes slighting into the assessor's hand then meows, stress meows and begins hissing fairly hard.

Midi tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
