Hoof abscesses! 😱 Not something we see a lot of but they are cropping up at the moment! This mare has been on and off lame for a while … suspect she had an abscess brewing back when her feet where hard as rock (possible that she had a penetrating injury to the hoof) and it was unable blow out so it has blown half the hoof capsule instead and popped out the white line eventually. A lot of poulticing and soaking to clean this one up and fingers crossed we don’t have pedal bone involvement. Going to be a while to grow this out and try to stabilise the hoof capsule while it grows out. 🤞And of course it is my own (somewhat neglected 🫣 been meaning to find time to bring her in and investigate this) horse. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ No judgement from us if you ever feel like you didn’t get something looked at sooner … we know that life gets busy and you do the best you can!

Pulse therapy in action today … this mare has a small wound above the knee with significant swelling… have a look at the increased blood flow in the front leg when we started pulsing! Increased blood flow = reduced inflammation and swelling and increased healing! And a whole body session to recharge and relax the whole body!

Excellent perspective on FMD 👌👌
11/08/2022

Excellent perspective on FMD 👌👌

🚨 FMD - A FEW FACTS 🚨

The FMD risk rating has increased from 8-12%... which doesn't sound that bad, right? So what are the factors that sit behind this risk rating?
🦠 FMD is one of the most infectious viruses in the world, affects multiple species and actually doesn’t kill many animals, so the infected animals remain alive, walking around and shedding virus everywhere they go.
🦠 However, the FMD virus is actually not very tough! It doesn’t like temperatures above 27°C, will die if the relative humidity drops below 60% and is very susceptible to heating, drying and changes of pH.
🦠 No outbreak of FMD around the world has ever been attributed to spread on humans.
The most likely route is via infected meat, fed to pigs. The FMD virus will survive in uncooked meats like salami, and in frozen meats for up to 6 months. This is called swill feeding and is illegal in Australia.
🦠 Pigs are really susceptible to infection via ingestion and they “amplify” the virus, shedding about 1000-3000 times more virus than a cow or a sheep.
🦠 If housed together, the pigs then create viral clouds, which can travel on the wind if the conditions are cool and humid and cattle and sheep get infected via inhalation (breathing in the virus).
🦠 Infected sheep show very little signs and this was an important part of the FMD outbreak in the UK in 2001 when infected but clinically normal sheep were traded all over the UK before the outbreak was detected.

So, while the risk of FMD getting into Australia has only risen slightly, the consequences if it did would be enormous. We can all do our bit to help manage the risk!
🏥Report sick animals to your vet immediately
🐷Never feed swill to pigs
📖Have an updated farm biosecurity plan
👨Risk assess visitors to your farm and animals
💻Do a PIC reconciliation on the NLIS database
🍔Buy Australian meat

A WARNING FOR FERAL PIG HUNTERS

A huge number of wild pigs in Australia are believed to be infected with leptospirosis.

The Queensland Murray Darling Committee is funding a research project into the feral pig with the hope of finding better ways to control numbers.

The research at four sites, Arcadia Valley and Miles in Queensland and Glen Innes and Moree in New South Wales, involves tracking 64 pigs for almost 12 months.

Blood tests have uncovered that a quarter of all feral pigs are carrying leptospirosis and a smaller number are also infected with brucellosis

The disease is a risk to pigs hunters, their dogs and cattle.

“Obviously when people hunt pigs they are exposed to blood and all different parts of the animal and they can contract leptospirosis or brucellosis from those animals,” Darren Marshall, the Regional Co-Ordinator for Feral Animals at QMDC.

In humans, without treatment, leptospirosis can lead to kidney and liver damage and even death.

Happy Vet Nurse Day! 🙌🐾
While I don’t have any nurses beside me just yet, we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate all the incredible, passionate and hard working nurses I have had the pleasure of working alongside over the years! ❤️A vet and a clinic is nothing without amazing nurses, they go above and beyond every single day to make our jobs easier, safer and more enjoyable!
Doing what we do for your animals is a team effort!
So for now we have Chris as our stand in nurse but perhaps down the track we can get some other nurses! 🙌🙌🍻🎉
