MAX - ID -Pit Bull Terrier mix-2 years, 4 months old

Max has been at the shelter since the beginning of September. He is an active dog who is very smart. Max does need a home with no cats and training. This handsome guy has been at the shelter too long. We are really hoping that he will be in a new home for the holidays. Max would be so happy and so would we. Come in and meet Max during our Home for the Holidays event.

Measuring between 150 and 175 decibels, fireworks are louder than gunfire (140 decibels) and even many planes at takeoff (120 decibels). Decibels measures the loudness of a sound while hertz measures the frequency of a sound. Human ears are damaged at a mere 85 decibels. Yet we can hear to only about 20,000 hertz, while dogs can hear between 45,000 and 65,000 hertz. Just think of the physical and emotional damage that might occur to a dog left outside to face the noise.

Due to Covid-19, animal advocates say this year has been extremely bad for pets with noise phobias. Instead of going people to central locations to watch a huge, orchestrated display, they have been buying fireworks in record numbers, setting them off in the streets next to homes for weeks.

1. Create a safe place for your dog
Keep your dog inside and make a safe place for them if you are aware of an upcoming fireworks display or thunder storm. This could be their kennel, or a cozy spot on the floor. You may also want to remove any free objects from the room that could cause an injury – some dogs become destructive when frightened. If the fireworks are close to your house, you may want to take them to a friend or family's house where the sounds won’t be as loud. Also close all the curtains and blinds to keep out the bright light flashes and decrease the loud booms and make sure all the doors and windows are securely closed and locked. You may also want to put down some training pads in case your dog gets excited and has an accident.

2. Exercise your dog
Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day. Several hours before the planned celebration, take your dog out for a long walk or run. By getting the energy out, they’ll have less to exert during the fireworks and hopefully be less stressed.

3. Feed your pet
Feed your dog a solid meal an hour or two prior the fireworks celebration. They'll feel relaxed and content like you do after a big meal.

4. Provide distractions
Try keeping your dog’s focus away from the fireworks or thunder by cuddling or playing with them. You can also give them a toy like a frozen treat to divert their attention. Try turning on the radio or the television to block out some of the loud noises.

5. Make sure your dog has proper ID
If you do take your dog to the fireworks make sure they are wearing an ID collar. Your dog may get scared and run off. Always keep your dog on a leash and keep them away from where the fireworks are being set off.

This will a win for all shelter pets!!

Gov. Gavin Newsom wants California to stop euthanizing animals, and he’s ready to put taxpayer money toward the cause.

“We want to be a no-kill state,” Newsom said during a press conference where he presented his 2020-21 budget.

Specifically, Newsom’s budget calls for a $50 million one-time general fund allocation to the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program to develop a grant program for animal shelters, with a goal of helping local communities “achieve the state’s policy goal that no adoptable or treatable dog or cat should be euthanized,” according to the budget summary.

Waking up with my Elvis Presley was amazing! He is having some extended relax time today. We went for a great morning walk and then after having some fun with kong and kibbles, Presley settled for an afternoon nap! Amazing boy is learning ‘Sit’, ‘Stay’ and ‘Down’ commands. He is a very strong boy but a gentle giant to say it! 💖💖🐾🐾💖💖

Bronx is 7 months old and weights 27lbs. He is full of love and so playful, but he is scared of every little thing around him. It took me 25 mins to reach this patio in my back yard later I had to carry him😭 This video was his day 2. When I take him out in my neighborhood which consist of only 40 homes and a small park where kids play. It takes me 30 mins to go around the park and then I have to carry him to my home. It seems like he is nervous to move or stepin or out. I keep telling him that he is a good boy and he is safe with me. I don’t know what the previous owners did to him, but he is pretty scared, has anxiety and cannot communicate enough with me. The only thing he does is loves me and wants to sleep on my lap. He is right now sleeping my lap while I type this. Sometime I hate human for doing this to an innocent little puppy. 🐾🐾

Meet Miss Lo**ta da Bonita! She is an absolute bundle of love! We think she is 4-5 years old, 41lbs, loves all dogs, cats, kids and people. She loves playing fetch and taking long walks, so we think she is an average energetic dog. She is up-to-date with shots, spayed and has no kind of allergies. She has no food/toy aggression. She is very sweet and will listen to her human. We think her previous owners never took care of her and she was skin & bone when she was found by my friend Michelle. She has a bad tooth which is not a problem now but will need removal later in few months. With little obedience class she has the potential to become a Canine Good citizen! She is currently with her foster mom at Hayward and we are looking for loving family for her. If you are interested to meet Miss Lo**ta, please message me!

From fearful to cheerful!! 🙄🙄 My sweet doll was adopted July 2015 by a beautiful family from Oregon! She was fearful, when I first met her at San Jose shelter. She was my weekend buddy and we hiked at 17 miles drive to caramel-by-the-sea to socialize her. Her charm spread to Oregon and the family fell for her💝 I so miss her! Her mommy messaged me and said they went for kayaking during the weekend! I so love this sweet patootie💝💝
