I got asked how soon do I get a halter on my mustang? Day 1. We have the option of putting on a halter in a chute before they are loaded. I like to let them stay in a halter for a couple days and drag the lead around because in a way they teach themselves how it works when they step on it and have the pressure to stop and they must give to the pressure. And they get real used to it.

Newest little Christmas Horse! This cute quarter horse stud was born in June. I’m going to teach my brother Luke to work with young horses. Can’t wait to see the progress this baby can make in the next couple years. What should we name him?

Here is the adoption application for anyone wanting to adopt any of the 10 amazing yearlings the 4Hers have worked with. Tomorrow we head to the Eastern Idaho State Fair to set up and we will see you around 11 on Friday for the mustang challenge and at 6 for a freestyle showing and Q & A with buyers or just curious fairgoers. Come to the light horse barn to check out Splash anytime, I’ll be there and ready for questions. The auction is on Saturday at 11:30 in the grandstands. It’s much easier to have your application filled out before you get your bidder number, but you can fill it out there too. Thank you everyone for all your ideas and shares and likes and views. I’m beyond excited to showcase Splash. He is really something special.

New bling for Splish Splash. Splash is from the Rock Springs Wyoming Mustang herd. We thought these conchos would be a special nod to his roots.

My grandpa told me my great-great-grandpa ranched in Hilliard Wyoming near these mustang herds. They would turn out their big Percheron studs in the mustang herds and every year they would round up some mustang/Percheron colts and that’s what they used as their work horses.

I love that Splash has some drafty look to him. Maybe he and I are part of each others history. Could he be descendant of my ancestors Percherons? Maybe.. just maybe…

The Legend of Splash

In the heart of the wild, where freedom roams,
A Mustang named Splash found his home.
With a coat of colors, bold and bright,
His mane, a waterfall of flaxen white.

He galloped through fields, night and day,
In the shimmering sun, he’d run and play,
A spirit untamed, he’d roam the land.
A symbol of grace he did stand.

With eyes like stars, he looked deep in my soul,
I picked him at once, my heart he had stole.
Yet amidst the beauty, a mystery lay,
The legend of Splash, as the stories say.

To train this wild soul, a challenge awaits,
A journey of patience, where passion elates.
A bond to forge, a trust to find,
To tame the wild heart, a soul intertwined.

With gentle whispers and a calming touch,
Step by step, a connection to clutch.
Through days and nights, they walk as one,
A dance of harmony, beneath the sun.

The mustang’s spirit, fierce and bold,
In his trainers hands, begins to unfold.
A language of cues, subtle and clear,
Guiding the way, with hearts sincere.

Poor splash boy got a leg caught in some wire and had to get so stitches. He’s doing fine and will heal up just fine. He handled the unscheduled trip to the vet like a champ. We will be taking it easy on him for a week for healing, maybe we will work on ground tying.

Splash did so many great things today. I loaded him up and we went to Ashton. He got to stand tied and watch us dummy rope with a 4 wheeler then team rope live steers. I ponied him around with my main horse Stinger. We went over a new bridge and around barrels, and the dummy.

Today we worked on lunging over poles and the flag, pool noodle and a rope. He’s such a funny boy, he didn’t mind the rope and wanted to chew on it. I had dirt bikes and 4 wheelers ride around him and he was pretty chill about that too.

We took splash to 4H. He did great loading but was antsy when we got there. Any tips on getting them to chill in new places? Or just more exposure?

Today was super windy, so I spent some time building a rope gate/ pool noodle passage. We will try it out tomorrow and hopefully get some video.

Had a week off while camping so we are diving right into it this week. Splash accomplished a lot today!
*picking up front feet
*pool noodle
*feed bag and walking on it
*garbage bag
*walked out of the round pen
*met the lambs
*met the pigs
*worked on trotting
*crossing painted logs

Meet Splash!

Splash is a yearling gelding from the Rock Springs Wyoming Mustang Herd. He is a sorrel with beautiful coloring and his mane and tail are flaxen. We looked at all 12 mustangs and made a list of our top choices based on looks and comformation. Interestingly enough on my first pass I put Splash in my 6th slot. After multiple passes I noticed his temperament. He seemed calm and less flighty. He was comfortable being at the fence next to us. I noticed how balanced his features were. He made his way to my top 3. It wasn’t an easy choice. But something about Splash spoke to me. He has gentle eye and a calm spirit. I had first choice of all the trainers, and I knew 100% he was the mustang for me. We had him haltered and loaded up and he’s home now.

Hi! I’m Jack. I am gentling and ground breaking a wild mustang through the East Idaho 4-H and BLM Wild Horse Program. I have 90 days to gentle and teach my mustang the skills he needs to be calm and safe on the ground and to complete a trail course at the Eastern Idaho State Fair. After the trail course an auction will be held and all 10 mustangs will be adopted! This is an amazing opportunity to adopt a mustang that has 90 days of groundwork, that’s a solid foundation! Took CHRONOS to FFA playday and weigh ins. Any opportunity we can take to show CHRONOS something new or to expose him to chaos you know we are going to take it! Wow we got alot done today and it was HOT! We worked on saddling, pool noodles and voice commands. I learned something last year that has really stuck with me. It’s good for my horse to get through obstacles or fear with me but I don’t want them to depend on me. I need to teach them they can be self confident. They can get through a challenge themselves. I think that makes a super solid horse, one that truly becomes 💣 proof. Ok guys another time to giveaway done CHRONOS swag!! We has his DNA tested through the lab at Texas A&M. They give you the top 3 breeds from a list of 50 breeds most common in North America that represent the major horse groups: drafts, ponies, oriental, Arabian, old world and new world Iberian. Mustangs were originally Spanish horses but over many years have been influenced by other breeds. This test show the 1-3 probability of a breed being their ancestral breed, it does not give percentages. So likely their is more influence, these are just the top 3. Whoever can guess CHRONOS top 3 breeds wins a sweet hat custom made by @poulsenleather. I will post of picture of the breed list. Congratulations Baylor Kite! No one guessed correctly but so close. CHRONOS is a huge lover of animals- cats, dogs, cows, other horses. CHRONOS couldn’t get the scary top out of his mind, we tried reintroduction for awhile, ultimately we decided to let him think about something else to redirect his fear. Once we did that he got overcame it SO fast! We did try to redirect with ball first but he loves cats and that really did the trick. Are you surprised? How do you think it went?
