I’m currently enjoying some time off and today I got to play with Maddy at hoopers Strictly K9 Dog Training. She was a star as was her sister Ebby … although the camera person missed her run 🫢
Maddy will be 2 years post cruciate surgery next month and she’s doing so well.
She comes for hydrotherapy and physiotherapy maintenance to keep her in tip top condition. Well done Maddy!!

Mabel and Brompton
Couldn’t think of a better post to start the week off than Brompton and Mabel enjoying the licky mat in the treadmill.
Mabel has been very nervous of the treadmill and it’s taken a few sessions for her to be this relaxed inside the tank. Brompton was happy to offer some moral support at the start of her session.

Finley loves to swim
This is Finley,
He has visited us twice now and is a huge fan of swimming. He likes to let everyone know when he’s arrived and that he’s ready to get in the pool.
FInley feels that the time spent putting his bouyancy aid on and giving him a shower before going in the pool is unnecessary….. so we compromise and he has a shower and his bouyancy aid on in return for a treat.
He can’t wait to get in the water to swim, and given a choice he would spend the entire session constantly swimming.
In Finley’s first session we taught him about rest periods. Using positive reinforcement he figured out that he got treats for being calm on the platform in between his swims. This allow his muscles to recover, his breathing and heart rate to return to a resting rate before his next set of swimming. Rest periods also bring his excitement levels down, too much arousal can cause a release of adrenaline which can actually be counter productive for building fitness and muscle strength.
Finely has taken really well to swimming with us and his owner is really pleased with how he is doing, she sent over a lovely review after his swim.

Willow loves swimming
Willow loves coming for her swimming session now. She glides across the water without a splash.
It didn’t look like this when we started, at first there was water everywhere, at times legs everywhere, but she soon got her confidence and learnt to trust it was ok, this then turned to it was fun.
She’s now straight in the pool, no hesitation and swims over to the platform, spending a few minutes wagging her tail in the water, which much be hard work for her but she’s so happy she can’t help it.
Well done willow!!

I mention my dog Skippy a lot on the Paddlefit Hydrotherapy page so I thought I would tell you all a little bit about him especially since he is the reason I am now a canine hydrotherapist.
Skip is a 12 year old, Australian Kelpie, his favourite past time is barking and he will do anything for smoked salmon or cheese.
Skip has developed a number of issues over the years but last November he developed rather sudden hind limb weakness. After numerous tests, MRi scans the vets were left unsure what was going on. At this point we were using a harness to help him stand up and move around the house and outside.
After discussions with the vets we began intensive physiotherapy with PawFit Veterinary Physiotherapy and twice weekly hydrotherapy to see if we could try and build up some hind limb strength. Skip loves swimming so it was nice to see him doing something he enjoyed.
Initially we were in the water for less than 5 minutes as that was all he could manage. As time went on I built up the amount of time he swam for and the exercises we did in the water. I then introduced the underwater treadmill and continued with alternating his sessions between the two pieces of equipment.
Regular laser therapy and physiotherapy made sure any inflammation and muscle soreness was managed. When he was able to, we added in some land based exercises.
Over 12 months on now and he now has physiotherapy with Fran at PawFit Veterinary Physiotherapy every other week and hydrotherapy in-between his physiotherapy sessions. He still has some ataxia and his exercise tolerance is less, but he is now able to go for walks, get up and down off the sofa and have a fairly normal happy life.
If you think Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy might be able to help your dog please get in touch. we are happy to talk you though how our sessions work and see if it the right approach for your dog.
Skip and I are now looking forward to an exciting 2022!
