Love this!
Unsure if your dog will take to hydrotherapy, please get in touch and we can talk through any concerns or worries. We have lots of happy dogs that come and see us but they weren’t all keen to start with. Time and patience are key to successfully introducing hydrotherapy 🐾
Check out this post about Ben. 🐾
He’s been having rehab at PawFit Veterinary Physiotherapy and it’s amazing to see him looking so happy walking around, being cheeky. ❤️🐾

🐾 Meet the Team 🐾
Suzi has been a part of the Pawfit Team as a Canine Hydrotherapist since December 2020 when the rehabilitation centre first opened. Suzi trained at Hawksmoor Hydrotherapy where she gained her Level 3 Certificate in Small Animal Hydrotherapy.
When not working Suzi is busy studying for her Veterinary Physiotherapy MSc at Nottingham University. At home Suzi is kept busy by her nearly 15 year old Kelpie, Skippy, who despite his age is always up to something, so you are sure to hear tales of his antics.
It was because of Skippy and Westy(her previous 32yr old ex-racehorse) that Suzi became interested in rehabilitation. She has a particular interest in helping our golden oldies and seeing how the application of hydrotherapy can help improve their mobility and quality of life. Additionally she loves working as part of the team to help dogs as they progress through their rehabilitation and recovery.
Being part team Pawfit over the last three years has been amazing as it is the best Job!
Should my older dog wear a coat in winter
We get asked this quite a bit, a the answer is mostly yes.
Older dogs, particularly those with arthritic joints and other mobility issues benefit from keeping their joints and muscles warm when out on walk. Especially when it is cold and damp.
The kind of coat you choose is dependent on your individual dog but there are lots of options from fleece to waterproof, insulated to just a waterproof shell.
In terms of design some older dogs will struggle with coats where they have to put their front/back legs into ‘sleeves’. There are plenty of options though for coats with zips along the back to make this easier or coats that have a fasten that goes round the dogs torso to secure it.
When fitting a coat ensure it is long enough to provide cover to length of the back and wide enough to wrap round the body well covering the most of their tummy and hind legs well. It needs to allow good movement and not restrict the shoulders.
A number of coats now have reflective details to improve vis ability on dark nights and plenty of hi vis options are round too to make your dogs really visible in the day.
Also if you dog it attending hydrotherapy, having a fleece type drying coat for after their session really helps all dogs keep warm on their journey home as they will usually still be a bit damp. We want to make sure their muscles and joints are kept warm after their treatment session to avoid stiffness.
Happy new year! 🥳
Woody had a super underwater treadmill session when he came in this week to PawFit Veterinary Physiotherapy.

How shockwave helps
Shockwave is the production of high-energy focused sound waves that can be delivered at a specific site in the body. The effects of shockwave include increased blood flow, modulation of inflammation and promotion of healing. It is often used to return chronic conditions to the acute stage of inflammation to promote healing. The use of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been around for many years and has commonly been used in humans, more recently this treatment is being used in animals.
This is very exciting.

🐾🐾 On Saturday 23rd September the PawFit Team will be taking part in the Chiltern 50K walk, although we aren’t too crazy as we are doing the second half of the walk - 27K Lewknor to Henley but this will be a challenge enough for us!
We are doing the walk in order to raise money for Wildlife Vets International. This charity provides veterinary care to wildlife around the world in order to aid conservation work and maintain animal welfare to both endangered and non endangered species.
In order to complete our challenge and spur us on, we would be very grateful for any donations. These can be made through our Just Giving page (link below) or in person at the centre 🐾🐾

I’m currently enjoying some time off and today I got to play with Maddy at hoopers Strictly K9 Dog Training. She was a star as was her sister Ebby … although the camera person missed her run 🫢 Maddy will be 2 years post cruciate surgery next month and she’s doing so well. She comes for hydrotherapy and physiotherapy maintenance to keep her in tip top condition. Well done Maddy!! PawFit Veterinary Physiotherapy
Couldn’t think of a better post to start the week off than Brompton and Mabel enjoying the licky mat in the treadmill. Mabel has been very nervous of the treadmill and it’s taken a few sessions for her to be this relaxed inside the tank. Brompton was happy to offer some moral support at the start of her session. This is Finley, He has visited us twice now and is a huge fan of swimming. He likes to let everyone know when he’s arrived and that he’s ready to get in the pool. FInley feels that the time spent putting his bouyancy aid on and giving him a shower before going in the pool is unnecessary….. so we compromise and he has a shower and his bouyancy aid on in return for a treat. He can’t wait to get in the water to swim, and given a choice he would spend the entire session constantly swimming. In Finley’s first session we taught him about rest periods. Using positive reinforcement he figured out that he got treats for being calm on the platform in between his swims. This allow his muscles to recover, his breathing and heart rate to return to a resting rate before his next set of swimming. Rest periods also bring his excitement levels down, too much arousal can cause a release of adrenaline which can actually be counter productive for building fitness and muscle strength. Finely has taken really well to swimming with us and his owner is really pleased with how he is doing, she sent over a lovely review after his swim. “𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘭𝘦𝘺 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘰 𝘴𝘸𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥. Willow loves coming for her swimming session now. She glides across the water without a splash. It didn’t look like this when we started, at first there was water everywhere, at times legs everywhere, but she soon got her confidence and learnt to trust it was ok, this then turned to it was fun. She’s now straight in the pool, no hesitation and swims over to the platform, spending a few minutes wagging her tail in the water, which much be hard work for her but she’s so happy she can’t help it. Well done willow!!

I mention my dog Skippy a lot on the Paddlefit Hydrotherapy page so I thought I would tell you all a little bit about him especially since he is the reason I am now a canine hydrotherapist. Skip is a 12 year old, Australian Kelpie, his favourite past time is barking and he will do anything for smoked salmon or cheese. Skip has developed a number of issues over the years but last November he developed rather sudden hind limb weakness. After numerous tests, MRi scans the vets were left unsure what was going on. At this point we were using a harness to help him stand up and move around the house and outside. After discussions with the vets we began intensive physiotherapy with PawFit Veterinary Physiotherapy and twice weekly hydrotherapy to see if we could try and build up some hind limb strength. Skip loves swimming so it was nice to see him doing something he enjoyed. Initially we were in the water for less than 5 minutes as that was all he could manage. As time went on I built up the amount of time he swam for and the exercises we did in the water. I then introduced the underwater treadmill and continued with alternating his sessions between the two pieces of equipment. Regular laser therapy and physiotherapy made sure any inflammation and muscle soreness was managed. When he was able to, we added in some land based exercises. Over 12 months on now and he now has physiotherapy with Fran at PawFit Veterinary Physiotherapy every other week and hydrotherapy in-between his physiotherapy sessions. He still has some ataxia and his exercise tolerance is less, but he is now able to go for walks, get up and down off the sofa and have a fairly normal happy life. If you think Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy might be able to help your dog please get in touch. we are happy to talk you though how our sessions work and see if it the right approach for your dog. Skip and I are now looking forward to an exciting 2022! #paddlefitk9 #paddlefithydrotherapy #tudortreadm

Learning to Swim 🦆 5 month old Ginny had her first swim this week. Kate at PawFit Veterinary Physiotherapy has been seeing Ginny over the last month after she suffered a suspected adder bite. Ginny was very poorly and in the vets for a week. She has made a great recovery but was left with lameness and muscle atrophy on her forelimb and some proprioceptive deficits. To help build up that lost muscle mass Ginny is now learning to swim. She was so brave and earned herself lots of tasty treats. Well done Ginny! If you have fit healthy dog who you would like to introduce to the pool and underwater treadmill we offer sessions to do this. This means if in the future your dog ever needs hydrotherapy, due to arthritis, for example they will be more relaxed about it. It is also a great form of physical and mental exercise for them. Last week we received some sad news that Harley had passed away. Harley was such a lovely boy who loved a fuss, though not as much as a treat. He would point blank refuse to walk on the treadmill unless there was food in front of his nose. His regular visits will be sadly missed at the centre , our love and thoughts go to his mum and canine sidekick Wilson. 🐾🌈Sleep well Harley🌈🐾
