My mom had a friend named Jane. I’ll never forget the first time my husband and I met her pups. She had two beautiful goldens, big boxy heads, fluffy furry bodies, face and ears like silk, and the softest eyes I had ever seen. I was hooked, I was all in! Someday I would have a dog like this. Several, if I was lucky!
First there was Chessy, all dogs will be measured by her sweetness. Next came Lucy, as adorable as she was naughty. Her life ended much too soon. They were the most amazing pups for a family with 3 kids. Sometimes they were dolls to dress up, sometimes they were small horses, sometimes sledding partners or part of the kitchen clean up crew, but always a friend and confidant. We tried to love them as well as they loved us, my hope is that they each felt more than enough.
Next came Mia, she has played a special role in our lives. When a therapist and a social worker told us we needed to send our daughter to college with a service dog I immediately thought of Jane and wished that I could sit down and pick her sweet brain. Jane and her husband Bob trained service dogs for people in need, now it was my turn. I could do this right? I can figure this out!
I took classes and studied IG like a boss. We trained everyday in the backyard, at Target and Home Depot. She went to bible study with me, and attended meetings at the local coffee shop. Before I knew it she was ready for college, we moved her in and part of my heart went with her.
That is what moms do right? They give their heart and soul for their kiddos. The truth is our family fell in love with English Creams. We also fell in love with the process of training dogs and helping others. This kindergarten teacher turned dog trainer could not be more thrilled! We invite you along on our journey as we continue to learn, train and love more pups.
Do we claim to know all the answers about training puppies, absolutely not. Do we love each pup as our own? FOR SURE!
