Friday, June 14 weekly update

10 of the dogs slated to travel did so this week. They are all destined for happy lives.

2 dogs were locally adopted thanks to a few beloved community members, Steve Cross, Jill Shurling, and Sasha Flores Lara.

We still have 37 dogs needing placement.

We always need food.

We always need crates

We always need local adoptions

We really need money.

We unite dogs from Lake Chapala communities with their new families.

What an amazing story of collaboration from this community. Steve Cross has a client, Jill Shurling, a huge dog lover. She had heard about a man who was looking for two dogs to adopt as his last dog had passed. We got in touch with him. Sasha Flores Lara went to him and helped to work out a great solution to ensure the dogs were safe as he lives where he works and it is near a busy street. Pepper and Panda, we’re tied to our door a few weeks ago and really needed a soft landing. Thanks to everyone involved, they will lead happy lives and help run a business! Many thanks to all who helped!

Just another clarification of exactly what is happening with Bone Voyage Dog Rescue. We have two shelters housing only medium sized and large dogs. One is located between Lucky Dog and Clicker Pets. The other is located on Beto’s property. The shelter next to Lucky Dog housed 32 dogs. We have placed them all and are currently flying and adopting them out locally. On July 1, the doors will close and we will vacate that facility. It is expensive to run a shelter. We want to use what money we have left to place the remaining Bone Voyage dogs who are currently under Beto’s care. Also, we are dissolving the 501c3 which is a non profit status in the US. There are a lot of reasons to do this, but suffice to say, it is difficult to maintain and probably should never have been formed. There are people working to place the dogs with shelters and private individuals. What we need is help with sustaining the BV shelter located at Beto’s. We have people working on supplying foood. We have severances we need to pay employees and other related expenses that will be ongoing. We will work very hard to raise the money we need to finish the job we have started.
We have come a long way in just about six weeks. From having no ability to meet our financial needs to placing and flying over 40 dogs so far. It is heartbreaking work and we just ask for grace and understanding that this is stressful and sad and we have no choice.

Don’t believe everything you read on Facebook. July 1, the shelter located next door to Lucky Dog will close. All of those dogs have been placed and are flying over the next few weeks along with a lot of BV dogs located at Beto’s facility. There is a team of people trying to place the remaining dogs as well as a team raising money and a team doing a food drive. Beto has been paid without fail. We have a finite amount of money that will be used to continue to operate Beto’s location. However, it is finite which is why there is a group working on fundraising.

How can we express our gratitude and appreciation to this community? We are among Angels! One in particular is Darla Boisjolie. She returned from a trip and found out about our struggles. She jumped in and managed to find donations of 14 bags of food to help Beto and the 41 dogs he is left to care for and place. This is a tremendous help! We love you, Darla!

Update June 7, 2024

We are currently trying to place 41 dogs. Our numbers would be lower, but two dogs were tied to the door last week.

This week, we flew 11 dogs. Many thanks to Susan Watkins for taking 4 to Portland.

Our dogs are medium sized to large and we are finding them very hard to place. The challenge is to find rescues willing to accept a large dog.

We will close our doors to the shelter between Lucky Dog and Clicker Pets on July 1. We can no longer afford the rent and operation costs.

We are dissolving the 501c3 as of the same date.

We will still have some dogs to place.

How you can help

Adopt- we have some amazing dogs available. Please consider them if adopting.

Foster- any of our dogs would benefit greatly by being in a foster home

Donate- we are scrambling for crates to fly the dogs in, food, medical care, you can donate by going to www.bonevoyagedogrescue.com and click on donate. You can also send a message and we can arrange to pick up your donation.

Volunteer- if you aren’t physically able to come out to the shelter, we have administrative things we need help with.

We appreciate your kind words, support, prayers, and concern. This is a very difficult and sad time for those of us in rescue sand the community who supports us.

Meet Mitzi. Mitzi is very fortunate. She has been accepted up north and to date is the only BV dog scheduled to go on the big red bus. Mitzi needs her teeth cleaned. It is over $600 USD to get them
cleaned where she is going. We would love to send her with pearly whites. Dr. Marcos is willing to do it
for $1500 pesos. Is anyone willing to help Mitzi get her big break?

Update, June 1

So we are working very hard to fly and send our dogs to safety. We have placed all but 37. However that is only about half. 8 dogs flew this week. Many thanks to The Pancho Project, The Barking Lot. We are nowhere near to the end. Here is what we need:

Adopt. Local adoptions of our beautiful dogs mean the world. Come and see us

Foster. Dogs fostered in homes are adopted more quickly

Donate. We need crates. Our dogs are flying. Crate are expensive. Each donation makes a huge difference. We need food, money

Volunteer come and walk dogs. Help with some administrative things

Be a flight Angel. We need someone to fly to Portland

UPDATE. Friday, May 24

Thanks to our fabulous community, we had a couple fundraising activities this week. We took some dogs to Tobolandia on Wednesday. Many thanks to Diane Smith at Simply Joyful for the sold out spaghetti dinner. Also huge thanks to Jayme Littlejohn at The Bravo Theatre for donation a portion of their ticket sales to movie events!

We have 42 dogs still to place. It is pretty tough going since most shelters in the US and Canada are full. However our long term relationships are paying off!

We have no bus scheduled at this time.

We continue to take great care of our dogs while watching closely every peso we spend!!

Next week, we will have a meet & greet at Ay Chihuahua on Wednesday. Come out and see their facility and meet some Bone Voyage dogs

As always you can help by

Donating- money, food, crates, canned food flights for dogs or angels

Volunteer- walk dogs, help at events

Foster- dogs do get adopted faster when they have been with a foster

Be a flight Angel

We are in a true race against time. We have got to place these dogs before we run out of money.

A brief update on our progress: while we have made significant strides, we still have substantial work ahead to find placements for all the dogs in our care. Next week, with the assistance of several rescues in the Pacific Northwest, we are excited to send 10 dogs north. However, contrary to some reports, we do not have a rescue that has committed to taking all of our dogs. We are deeply grateful for the support we've received from these rescues, but each has its own capacity limits that we respect. Therefore, we are not yet at the finish line. We sincerely appreciate your ongoing support and ask that you continue to share and support our efforts to find homes for these dogs.

Friday update

As we are in the community, we are getting questions. We appreciate them all and we will answer them. It appears to some that we asked for money once, got it and then we are asking again. The first fundraising was a request to pay for operations while we were trying to find sustainability. We launched a sponsorship program, we looked at finding other income as well. It was a race against time. We made the very difficult decision to close the doors to the shelters and place the 77 dogs who were in our care. This also takes time and money. We are humbled to repost that we have enough donations from YOU to continue operations while searching for adopters and rescues. The rescues NOB are also full so the task is a challenge. However, we have 10 dogs slated to fly soon. We have a flight Angel going to Seattle and we are searching for rescues in the area willing to receive our dogs. We have one dog going into a training program for companion dogs. Want to help?

Foster- fostering a dog helps gain exposure for the dog

Adopt- if you are thinking about it, now would be an excellent time

Donate- money, crates, canned food, kibble, plastic chairs, power washer, buy a p**a truck for water

Volunteer- we have some amazing folks who walk and socialize the dogs

We are grateful for the help this community has offered. We will continue to work hard to place these beautiful creatures.

We would like to update our community, donors, volunteers, employees and adopters as to our progress and plans. We will do so every Friday.

As a point of clarification, and to make sure everyone understands what has happened, is happening and will happen. For the last year and a half, we have been working hard to cut our costs, and increase our donations to become sustainable. We were helping all area rescues fly their dogs to adopters. This includes the rescues we all know the names to, but as well, Mexican rescuers who are alway overwhelmed also. We taught them how to fly dogs, and helped them make their connections with rescues in Canada and the US. As any business owner knows, this is a race against time. Our volunteers spent their own money to pay for vet care, supplies, airfare, you name it. We had a very few regular donors. We worked on a sponsorship program in the hopes we could support our shelters until we could shut them down.

Since December, 2023, we have reduced the number of dogs in our shelters by over 40. All while trying to help the community by taking some dogs that Flower was trying to place and rescuing a litter of 9. Many thanks to Lucky Dog for paying for the vaccines. We greatly reduced our vet bills by not taking new dogs in, and Lakeside Friends of the Animals helped with spays and neuters.

Recently, we realized that we needed to close down our shelters with 77 dogs. We are furiously trying to place them We have 11 slated to fly in the next two to three weeks. We also facilitated an adoption that was posted as a courtesy post and was in the Lucky Dog shelter.

Wednesday, we had an open house. While there were no adoptions, we had a lot of people come and look at the 30 dogs we have there. Each dog is highly adoptable and well socialized. We got some other donations of items we need to have to operate.

We have a gofundme page. We have a PayPal page. We have received cash. We have enough money to continue operations for May and June. We will continue to try to raise funds to stay operating until the last dog is placed.

We have a group of amazing people from the rescue community who are helping us advertise and find rescues they have connections with to place dogs. No amount of thanks will come close to how much we appreciate the support and help.

We are participating in movie afternoon with Bravo Theatre. We will have a spaghetti dinner at Simply Joyful and proceeds will go to help our operating costs.

Our entire focus is currently on placing dogs. We will rethink the future when that is done.

Last week, I asked for grace. I am doing the same this week. Please give all the people who are trying to save the lives of 77 dogs a break.

If you want to help

Adopt- We have great dogs

Foster - Fostered dogs get homes faster

Donate - www.bonevoyagedogrescue.com click on donate. we also need food, plastic chairs, hoses, a pressure washer

Volunteer - Walk dogs, help us thanks donors, volunteer at fundraisers, help get dogs ready for flights.

Please be part of the solution.

We unite dogs from Lake Chapala communities with their new families.
