BEFORE YOU PURCHASE A CANADIAN ESKIMO DOG PUPPY
To a dog lover, there is nothing more precious than a puppy. And to a CED fan, a new pup is downright irresistible. But before you consider adding a new family member, you need to do your homework. First, decide if this breed is a good fit for you. The CED is a high energy, hardy working breed. Although they will certainly enjoy crawling into your lap, they are by no means a “lap” dog. You will need to provide lots of exercise, and mental challenges to keep him happy, and out of mischief. Do you have young children? Remember, it is in this breed’s nature to be protective of his family, so you may need to be careful when you have little “visitors” in your home. Do you have a fenced yard or proper containment for this houdini? Many breeders will not place a dog if you do not have a safe area for frequent romps.
An older dog may work better for you. The personality is established so you know exactly what you are getting, and there will be no “puppy surprises”.
Whether you are looking for a puppy, or an older CED, the best place to start is the Canadian Eskimo Dog Club of Canada website. This site is packed with information and resources that will help you make your decision. You can message them and they will put you in touch with reputable member breeders in your area. As this is a rare breed there is not many true ethical breeders and there often is a wait list.
As in most dogs, there are underlying health conditions and genetic problems that can appear in this breed, though not many. That is why it is important to find a breeder that is careful when selecting dogs for breeding.
Remember, a CED's life expectancy is similar to that of other medium sized breeds. You can expect to have a loyal companion for 10 or more years, so be sure that you are willing to fulfill that commitment.
If you discover that a Canadian Eskimo Dog is the right breed for you, chances are you will never again be without one!
