Found this while researching the properties of rue and thought I would share it with my followers: When it comes to fleas camping out on your pets, pennyroyal helps keep them at bay. This perennial herb is hardy in zones 7-9 and grows in sun or shade in well-drained soil. To prevent a flea infestation, just add crushed pennyroyal leaves and a bit of chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) flowers to the inside of your dog or cat’s bed. (A little catnip will keep your cat coming back for her all-natural flea protection.) If you want to go the extra mile, give your pet a quick herb bath. Just add 2 cups of fresh pennyroyal or mint to a quart of boiling water. Simmer for a half hour. Add the “tea” to a gallon of water (and let it cool a bit), then bathe Fido with it (just not his face).

I receive a publication called "Dogs Naturally" that I highly recommend to all my customers. One of the articles in this month's magazine deals with food allergies in dogs. Because I specialize in therapeutic products for dogs I meet a lot of dog owners with itchy dogs and I also meet a lot of people who claim that changing a dog's diet will solve all the dog's problems. The article is written by Maria Ringo, a licensed homeopathic practitioner and this is what she has to say: "Years ago when I first started in the pet industry, dogs were becoming allergic to beef, the main protein source in most commercial foods so the manufacturers started making lamb diets. Then the dogs were all becoming allergic to lamb and everyone switched to chicken... and now I'm hearing from people that their dogs are all supposedly allergic to chicken" She goes on to say that true food allergies only affect about 10 percent of canines. She goes on to talk about food intolerances or food sensitivities that create chronic inflammation in the body thus causing a host of symptoms that have previously been attributed to allergies. An inexpensive flea killer for your house - borax powder! Just sprinkle some on your floor coverings and then sweep or vacuum up the excess. The invisible borax crystals left behind will kill the fleas.
Another itchy dog recipe to try: 1/2 cup vinegar, 1/2 cup brewed green tea, 1 cup water. Mix together and apply to your dog's skin. I haven't tried this so can't vouch for it. I don't think you'd want to keep this mixture around as I'm sure things would start growing in it. It could probably be kept in the fridge for a few days though.

Now that spring is here start adding a small amount of apple cider vinegar to your dog's water bowl to help naturally repel fleas and ticks. Recommended amounts vary so I would start with 1 tsp. and gradually work up to 2 tbl. Make sure you monitor your dog's intake of water to be sure he isn't turning his nose at the added vinegar in his bowl.
If you see your dog chewing or licking his feet and you notice dark rusty colored hair between his toes, he could very well have a yeast infection which is a type of fungus infection. Yeast is something that is always present on a dog's body and isn't usually a problem. Yeast can get out of control if your dog's immune system becomes depressed, when they're given antibiotics or sometimes, just scratching will allow the yeast to invade the skin. Using a shampoo with oatmeal can actually make matters worse (oatmeal can actually feed the yeast) and avoid antimicrobial shampoos as they can be too harsh on your dog's skin. For an easy old-fashioned remedy try this: Mix 1 oz. of sulphur (found at your local drugstore) with 2 oz. of lard. You could use hydrogenated soybean oil (Crisco) if you didn't have access to the processed lard packaged in the tub. Rub in gently once a day for a few days preferably after bathing with our "A Dog's Best Friend" shampoo bar.

Many, many people come to my booth at shows asking for products to help relieve their dog's itching this time of year. Dog's Naturally Magazine just posted information on a supplement they're calling "Nature's Benadryl". The supplement is called Quercetin which is a plant-based compound with anti-histamine properties. It isn't intended for long-term use.
Found this while looking for information on treating hot spots on cats. I always have a big tub of Epsom salt in the barn for treating hoof abscesses - now I have another reason to keep it around.
The healing properties of Epsom Salt have been known for generations. Gentle soaking of just about any infected area of skin with Epsom Salts – including feet, feline acne, hot spots and more, once or twice daily, discourages infection, reduces swelling, and promotes healing. Epsom Salts are available OTC at any human pharmacy. To apply use a folded cloth applied gently to the affected area, or if the hot spots are under the feet, soak feet in a saturated solution, meaning add as much of the epsom salts to a warm-hot bowl of water until no more will dissolve, then soak for 5-10 minutes. DO NOT LET YOUR DOG DRINK THE WATER.

Geraniol is dubbed as an alternative to Deet for flea and tick control. Often referred to as an essential oil, it is actually a component of an essential oil and can be found in many including geranium, palmarosa, orange, lemongrass, hops and lavender essential oils. The highest source of geraniol @ 90 percent is found in Monarda Fistulosa essential oil. You may know this plant as Wild Bergamot or Bee Balm. Lesser amounts are contained in Geranium essential oil at 50 percent and Citronella Essential oil at 30 percent.
