Large, sharp-edged scales around their body and a habit of curling up when threatened have given this unique lizard its common name. The armadillo lizard is a type of girdled lizard, a family of small to medium-sized lizards that occur in southern and eastern Africa. They are well known for their hard scales, reinforced with bony plates and sometimes spikes, that form bands that encircle their bodies. Such defenses afford the armadillo lizard the luxury of a relatively unhurried life.
Armadillo lizards spend their day basking in the sun or wandering around their dry scrub habitat in search of prey. They are particularly fond of termites. At night, they retire in a rocky crevice, empty burrow, or among tree roots.
The strangeness of the armadillo lizard does not end with its defenses, as they are aberrants in their social lives as well. Atypical of a reptile, armadillo lizards prefer to live in family groups numbering around four lizards but occasionally as many as 50. These groups contain lizards of all ages and sexes and they often rest together in their nests. The territorial males generally defend a small area within a group, however they prefer to do so peacefully. Unrelated intruding males are sometimes met with spectacular aggression, however.
Mating occurs in early spring and 1 or 2 babies are born live 6 to 7 months later.

• Armadillo lizards perform several actions that help them communicate. These include head bobbing, tail wagging, or tongue flicking. These signals can aid in courtship, or in the case of tongue flicking, can warn unfamiliar lizards to leave.
• Formerly included in the genus Cordylus, it was moved to its own genus based on molecular phylogeny in 2011.

The armadillo girdled lizard might be the closest we’ll ever get to having real dragons. It lives in desert areas along the western coast of South Africa.

They are incredibly territorial animals, and live in groups of up to 60 individuals.
While its scaly back is quite hard, the lizard’s underbelly is rather soft. In order to defend itself against predators, it curls forwards into a ball and bites onto its tail. This is similar to the way armadillos behave, which is where its name comes from.
Since capturing these lizards for the pet trade was made illegal, their conservation status has changed from Vulnerable to that of Least Concern. Video credit:

Ouroborus cataphractus, the Armadillo girdled Lizard.

Articulated figures by Bandai, part of the Ikimono encyclopedia Dangomushi range.
The larger figure was the 'black' version, but it didn't look as nice in person as it did in photos, so I repainted it to be the more typical desert brown form. The smaller one is the original armadillo lizard from the Dangomushi set which doesn't have as much detail in the sculpt although I think the face, especially the eyes look more realistic.

The last two images show the new version before I repainted it.

The Armadillo girdled lizard (Ouroborus cataphractus) possesses an uncommon defensive behavior, it takes its tail in its mouth and rolls in a ball, protecting itself with the thick spiny back and tail and ability to wedge itself between the rocky outcrops it lives between. These lizards live in social family groups.
They are endemic to South Africa.
