After dealing with a horror story today, where three newborn kittens have tragically died, I need to explain a couple of basics;
KITTEN MILK IS NOT THE STUFF YOU BUY IN CARTONS FROM A SUPERMARKET OR THE PET STORE
'Kitten milk' is FORMULA. Formula is specialist milk powder that has to be made up after boiling the kettle, letting it cool, then boiling to 70 degrees.
SYRINGE FEEDING DOES NOT MEAN SQ**RT MILK INTO THE KITTEN'S MOUTH WITH ANY OLD SYRINGE YOU FIND AT HOME
Syringe feeding is a sterile syringe and teat, dropped slowly into the kitten's mouth
KITTENS ARE NEVER EVER EVER FED ON THEIR BACK
Kittens are fed on their tummy.
If you don't know what you are doing you can kill a kitten in seconds - it's as simple as that.
Over the years, We have been asked hundreds of times how to bottle feed, and many times to post a 'how to' online
My advice every time when asked for 'help' bottle feeding is always - DON'T. Unless you know what you are doing. And when I'm asked to post a step-by-step online - I can't. Because I could never forgive myself if that person followed my guide and something went wrong.
Please. Unless you know what you are doing. Don't do it. A kitten has to be cleaned, toiletted, weighed, burped, every single feed. 24/7. Between those feeds you have to keep everything sterile and think of a 101 things.
I do it because I am OCD, stubborn, bloody minded and can't sit back and watch babies die.
