Curious how to check that your barn is ready for fall? We have some tips:

Examine your electrical cables for signs of fraying, corrosion, or rodent tampering. Most barn fires occur in the fall or winter, so prevention is key!

Monitor barn ventilation and draftiness. Every horse needs easy breathing room, but drafts can cause illness. Make sure to patch any areas of the barn causing drafts before major temperature drops.

When it gets cold outside, not only do horses move inside, but so do the rodents. Take extra measures to rodent proof the barn area with metal containers for food.

Check fencing for flaws. Loose boards, sagging wire, wobbly fence posts, and voltage drops can all become more dangerous over time.

Wondering if fall allergies are bothering your horse? Process of elimination generally helps to determine whether allergens are the source of your horse’s discomfort. We recommend monitoring your horse’s body for lesions or hives and double checking what substances and objects are coming into contact with your horse. If shampoos and fly sprays aren’t the source of the reaction, try contacting your vet for an intradermal skin test (IST) for conclusive results.
