I’d like to think it was my winning personality, but it’s more than likely the bucket of food I was carrying! 🤣
Thank you so much to Angie for calling about the swan. Sadly it seems to have moved on from this group, but there were worse places to be on this beautiful day.

Thank you so much to Katrin for sending the bag of swan food off the Amazon Wish List. I'm really grateful, especially as fatty in the foreground here, stuffed his face with most of the last bag!!
I set out at 7.15am this morning to take these two to The Swan Sanctuary, a three hour round trip but at least the M25 was kind to me today. Thanks to the Sanctuary, as always and well done Mark, Swan Rescue - Hertfordshire for picking up the youngster.

Squeamish alert!
It’s been a busy day. I had a little paddle to get this one 🥴 🥶🥶🥶🥶
I currently have two residents back in the shed. One with what seems to be a leg injury and this poor soul, who will be heading to the sanctuary for treatment. Thanks to Mark Swan Rescue - Hertfordshire for driving part of the journey to the Sanctuary tomorrow.
I had to do a dodgy bit of first aid to try and stem the bleeding. Hope it likes its bandage 🥴

What a beautiful morning for another release.
I dropped the Swan I picked up on Monday (Dept. of Zoology Cambridge) at The Swan Sanctuary yesterday and while I was there collected a return journey. This is the swan rescued on the 3rd of February with Mark, https://www.facebook.com/swanrescueherts which had the awful pike barb through its tongue.
I will never tire of seeing this. Amanda and Simon, I hope the video makes you smile. Thank you once again for helping on the day.

Strike 3! 😵‍💫 Department of Zoology, Cambridge. https://www.facebook.com/CamZoology Love that I was outside the (Sir) David Attenborough building. This one had crashed behind a bike shed on Friday.
Thanks to Emma for your help.
I’m going to need a bigger shed!
Yesterdays one will probably be released tomorrow when the wind drops. Another day of 60mph winds here.

Wow! Through floods and hail to pick up another lost soul. Staying the night as we have torrential rain and very strong winds again.
Thank you to the lovely, friendly people of Manor House Gardens for looking after it until we arrived. 🥰

Bit of a late one but not long back from picking this skinny little one up. Thank you so much to Anna for going back twice to its location today, to check on it, after it appeared to be struggling.

Thank you to Phil for coming along to help find it and for pushing my rump over the barbwire fence 🤣
Eat up little one, you need to get plumpy!

Mark Swan Rescue - Hertfordshire asked me if I would go and check on the elusive “Mrs Stanborough”today. She has an old injury that has caused damage to her left nostril, this in turn causes her sinuses to swell. You can see this in the photo of her head.
It had also been reported that she had a fishing hook in her neck.
Thank you to Claire and Den who were there when I got there and were a great help distracting the geese so I could get close enough to her to catch her by hand.
I removed a large stone from inside her nostril and lots of debris and flushed it with clean water. After a video call with Mel at the Swan Sanctuary, I also managed to remove the Fishhook.
Thankfully I managed to do everything out the back of my truck and she was returned very promptly to her waiting cob. 🥰

A relocation of a juvenile this morning, who’d been in a bit of bother. Now with friends. Thanks to Ashleigh for calling me. 😊

Fantastic team effort yesterday afternoon to help this poor swan who had a large 3 barbed pike lure through it's tongue.
Amanda and Simon called us after seeing it floating on the river, covered in blood.
Gill arrived with her kayak(Thanks Gill) and Mark https://www.facebook.com/swanrescueherts took to the water and managed to guide the swan back down the river and nearer the bank so I was able to catch it with it swan hook. It did slip the hook just as I got it on land but a grab and I managed to stop it getting back in the water.
Amanda and Simon were amazing and stayed the whole time we were trying to catch it, feeding the other swans to keep them out of the way and helping where ever they could. Fantastic couple! Thank you so much guys for your help and for giving up so much of your day.
My husband Phil arrived with some strong cutters and while Mark steadied the swan's head, I manged to find the end of the barb under the tongue and Phil snipped the barb off allowing me to remove the hook. The poor thing's tongue was so horribly swollen but I drove it to The Swan Sanctuary and after receiving pain meds, it was already looking brighter and will make a full recovery.
This just shows when people work together what can be acheived. I'll be going back to meet Amanda and Simon at a near by pub to buy them a thank you "coffee" and look at the swans on the river from a slightly different angle.☺

I got to the lagoon early, hoping to meet Thames Water. Both swans were on the water and I managed to get them both close enough to grab the cob, as he was by far the worse. The poor thing was sinking as he swam over to me.
Mark Swan Rescue - Hertfordshire then arrived and our intention was to put the cob in my truck and try for the pen. Unfortunately she had other ideas and flew off.
Mark has very kindly made the trip to the swan sanctuary with the cob, where he will be cleaned - the swan, not Mark! 😂
We will keep an eye on the lake to see if the other one returns.
Thames Water have messaged me since I got home and they are taking action at the lake to investigate the pollution. The chap I met today was lovely. Thanks for coming out so promptly.
All my clothes are now in the washing machine and I'm just off to hose the truck out. All in all a good morning.

02/02/2022

Thank you to Thames Water who have responded to me tagging them in my earlier post. They are sending an engineer to the lagoon this morning to investigate. The promptness of the response is very much appreciated.

Mark asked if I’d go check on these two at the “stinky” lagoon in Welwyn after reports from the public of them being contaminated. This is where the other filthy swan I picked up on 20th Jan originated from. It’s the first time I’ve seen the place and OMG 🤢 the smell and pollution!
I got close to the less dirty one but the other wouldn’t leave the island and just stood trying to clean itself.
Mark and I are going back tomorrow to try and get them as NOTHING should be living in that filth and definitely not trying to raise young there.
Shame on you Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and Thames Water for not sorting this place out.I will be contacting the Environment Agency too as this is not the first lot of sick and dying birds at this place. Welwyn Hatfield Times
A few people were there with their children trying to feed the few ducks that were there. Personally I wouldn't want my children anywhere near that water.

Happy Sunday everyone 😃 This is the swan I picked up last Saturday that was unable to walk. A weeks R&R at The Swan Sanctuary and look at her 🥰 Thanks Mel and Co.

Not long been in from this call out. Thanks to Lauren for calling the sanctuary and for then calling me.
Thanks to Mark too for meeting me. It was pitch black by the time we got to the park and we had quite a search to find her. Top marks to Lauren for photographing her ID band, so we knew we had the right swan!
Thankfully we did find her, checked her over and all was fine. It could have been a damaged beak, which bleed profusely, but had stopped by the time we checked her.
What made me laugh is as I grabbed her out the lake, her beefy fella said “sod this” and swam off! Men! 🤣
I think it’s safe to say my Friday nights outs have changed 🤣 💃 🕺 🍷 🥃

I went to this beauty yesterday after a lady reported it was collapsed and unable to walk. There were no obvious external injuries (apart from that tail Mel!! 😂) But when I felt it it was "crunchy" around the area behind it's legs and was breathing through it's mouth. I felt it had had a clump and may have internal issues. Mel confirmed that it's possibly spinal damage, which would affect it's breathing if the air sacs are damaged too.
I've driven it the the Sanctuary first thing this morning, where it's under their super care. Thank you Mel for seeing me at first doors and get well little one.
