Yesterday I was walking Winston back from a long walk in Central Park when a man that I was passing leaned over and spit in my face. Months ago another man went out of his way to try and kick Winston. Thankfully nothing worse happened. I was able to go home and shower after being spit on, and the second man never made contact when he tried to kick Winston. In both instances I pulled out my phone to try to capture their identity in some way. But I know these assaults are very minor compared to what the city is dealing with right now. A reminder to be alert of your surroundings when walking your dog in a big city like NY. Although I like to think I was and not sure how these situations could have been prevented.

A reminder that tick exposure can occur year-round. While ticks are most active in the warmer months (April-September), they do not go away just because of the cold and can survive the winter by going dormant or latching onto a host. We keep Winston on a flea/tick topical all year, but this does not prevent fleas/ticks from latching on! I think a common misconception about these meds is that they repel ticks. These medications work by killing the flea/tick after it has bitten the host since the medication is in our dog’s blood. So unfortunately, like you can see here, ticks can still be brought into the home any time of the year. 😫 In the warmer months we like to spray Winston with a natural tick repellent before we go into the woods. We do this in addition to his flea/tick topical. We’re also pretty vigilant about doing regular tick checks. Like Winston’s shoes?
