Got a report back from Randy’s partner on Lone Pine Down Line. He says he really likes her and the first night he took her out in Alabama where he lives she treed him four racc**ns. I’m glad she is settling in well at her new location and it worked out at the right time for my next project Lone Pine Little Shot who has really started to come on strong this past week. Will probably be a lighter week coming up with temperatures dropping to -25 at night consistently.

❄️ FINALLY 🧊 got some snow. We got about four or five inches yesterday with some wind. It was about twenty degrees and Tony showed me a lot of his potential last night. If you ever get a chance to hunt in the snow I have a story with a method I want you to try out. So last night I turned him loose on a field edge. He ended up going about six hundred yards and falling treed on a giant den I tree on all the time this time of year. Of course when I got there one poked its head out of the den to see what the commotion was about. I recut him from there where and he milled around a little so I verbally commanded him to continue on. He went another four hundred yards to my left and located twice but then stopped barking. I looked on my tracker and could see him slowing working back and forth to my right. I knew he was on a track but he doesn’t open a ton. Every forty five seconds or so he would make a ground bark. He ended up going another two hundred and fifty yards and treeing. When I got there he was barking and digging at the base of the tree. I tied him back and stuck my phone in the hole to record what was inside. Of course it was another one balled up inside a tree for warmth. Here is what I want you to try. In that situation circle the tree looking for racc**n tracks in the snow. I did that and couldn’t see any. Those types of trees are ones that impress me the most. Any dog can tree a hot track in the spring I prefer to see what they can do this time of year. I recut him from there and he took off great. He ended up running one in a hole. He was hunting so well I was determined to try and find one dumb enough to be on the outside so we continued on. He fell treed on another big den with the only hole being way up towards the top so I couldn’t look inside of it. At this point we were running out of timber so I cut him one last time and he ran a decent sounding track to another den. Low and behold he had another one inside of a den. After that tree he was still dragging me wanting to continue on, but I decided to call it a night and head back home. I could of been like a lot of people and said the weather is too bad or assume the racc**n wouldn’t be out that night, instead I went out and made a memory that I will never forget.

Last night it was pretty windy. We don’t have much snow in this area. Only about an inch since the worst of the latest storm went south of us. I hunted three dogs last night. Randy Smiths female Lone Pine little Shot. She’s a young pup out of Little Money and Lone Pine Quick Shot. She had just started treeing when the weather got bad and luckily before then I was able to knock a few down to her before it got really tough. Last night she did a great job and ran a rutting boar through the nastiest thickest swamp I’ve been in and treed him in a den. It took me forever to get through the swamp to her with the ice cracking under my feet in places, but luckily it held. After I hunted her in a few sections and got a couple trees out of her I took another Walker pup I am hunting and my bluetick Tony Soprano. The walker pup isn’t far enough along to trees these types of racc**ns yet but stayed gone split from my bluetick the entire night. I turned Tony loose twice. The first time he went six hundred and fifty yards and started throwing his long drawn out locates. As I approached I knew exactly what tree he was on and it made me happy because I knew it was a den you could look inside. Of course he had one sitting inside moving around. I praised him and recut him from there and he went about seventy five yards and started working. He is one that I have to just trust to do his thing because normally I would encourage a dog to move on from a track like that, but with him if he is working a spot and not barking he will usually end up throwing his big locates and have one. So I waited and of course he treed again seventy five yards from his first tree and had another. I continued hunting the other pup to see if he could find anything and he couldn’t find an easy opportunity to figure one out just yet. The other pup just needs an easier night to build his confidence. It’s currently snowing lightly here again as I look out the window. I’ll probably give it another go here again tonight.

Nice to see a family with a blue dog.

Out of 299 entries on Friday night at Grand American, GRNITECH GRCH 'PR' Carolina Blue Bristol, a Bluetick female owned by Brent Lipscomb and handled by Chris Speer took home 1st with a score of 875+.

Trevor had a chance to sit down with Chris Speer, his son, and his kennel partner that you'll hear on an upcoming episode of the UKC Hunting Ops Podcast so keep an eye out for that.

There is still a lot to be decided before tonight's Grand American Nite Hunt Champion is crowned. 230 eager dogs and handlers are waiting on dark, to see who can sneak into the Top 20 tonight, and maybe even punch their ticket into that distinguished Final Cast.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing kids in the woods with their dog. No matter what you pursue, when a dog is involved memories will be made. The ability to be together with your friends and family sharing stories and traditions makes this type of hunting my favorite. It also makes me believe it’s one of the most important forms of hunting to keep our rural lifestyle alive. When everyone grew up having a story of going out and getting a vest full of game for mom to cook up the world was a better place. Photo from my good friends Randy and his son Troy Smith.

December 25th, 2024. One of the happiest nights of my life and one of the best Christmas gifts I could get. As always lately it was extremely difficult to find something to tree. Luckily my son was very eager to keep going and in the third section we hunted Tony located and fell treed. Another lay up on a big oak den, no tracks at all. Nights like this are why I decided to pick up a camera. What made this night even more special other than being the first time he has seen a c**n taken was his reaction. He wants to get the next one. I told him from now on he can get every one we take. We followed up this great night in the woods with some snacks in front of the fireplace while we watched a movie. He made it about 20 minutes before he fell asleep under a blanket next to me on the couch. There is no one on this planet that can convince me that this isn't the best life for a boy and dog. He will remember this night forever, and I will too.

Went out last night and hunted a couple different pups in a sleet filled icy mess. The first pup didn’t do much. The next pup, Lone Pine Down Line covered a lot of ground and treed the World Record for smallest boar. Look how that has this dog all muscled up. Since tonight is Christmas Eve I will be taking my son out with my blue dog to make some lifelong memories. Hope you have a great day.

My experience like everyone else around here that I have talked to is that they are not moving really at all. When you tree it’s on a den or right next to a den. Little to no ground scent makes it very difficult on pups. This time of year you need a good lay up dog so I took out Mr. Soprano last night and it wasn’t long and he found a nice one sitting on the outside of a big oak den tree. Have you been experiencing the same thing lately? The rut will be here before long and I believe that will change things up a bit.
