This evolving virtual first aid kit provides access to resources regarding the needs of LGBTQ+ and other marginalized communities with several new resources recently added.

Wherever this first aid kit finds you, you are likely feeling mounting concern over the state of affairs in your daily life today and in the future. However you feel right now, you are not alone. There are many of us trying to figure out how to navigate a changing landscape of intolerance and discrimination.

We created this resource kit to help all of us with our journey through this time. It isn’t perfect, and not all of these resources apply to everyone. Please complete the form on the First Aid Kit landing page if you have resources you would like to add.

Today is the ! Veterinary medicine impacts us all— whether you have pets, visit animals in the zoo, live in wildlife habitats, care about food safety, or enjoy watching animals on the TV! 🐕 🦒🐻 🦺📺

Today and every day, we recognize that Indigenous Peoples are the original and traditional stewards of the lands we call home. In the spirit of respect and awareness, we encourage everyone to pause and learn about the Indigenous communities who originally inhabited the land where you live. To find out which tribal land you live on, visit the website Native Land Digital (https://native-land.ca/) and enter your address or city.

Land acknowledgments aim not only to give recognition but to actively counter the longstanding erasure of Indigenous peoples. But there's still so much more to do.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an estimated 7.1 million Indigenous Peoples live in the United States in 2023, yet fewer than 1,300 are veterinarians. Today reminds us of how much work lies ahead to make the community truly inclusive.

Meet Jose Ortega (he/him/his)! He’s a pre-vet student at Carleton College and a volunteer with Pawsibilities Vet Med. In this video, Jose shares how our community has been instrumental in helping him build meaningful relationships and expand his network with veterinary professionals. Through these connections, he’s been able to learn more about veterinary medicine, which has been a huge help as he navigates an industry he’s still getting to know.

“I originally wanted to go into veterinary medicine because there was a lack of diversity within my own community. Our veterinarians did not reflect the community that they worked in. I wanted to see a Spanish-speaking veterinarian. Pawsibilities [Vet Med] gave me the opportunity to see all the amazing veterinarians that exist across the country doing amazing things and also looked like me.” Meet Luisanny Perez, DVM! 🌟 Dr. Perez joined Pawsibilities Vet Med as a student and mentee and has recently achieved her goal of becoming a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Now, she gives back to the community by serving as a mentor. She proudly shares that one of her mentees has been accepted into veterinary school and is preparing to start this fall! Mission

Pawsibilities is a veterinary mentoring platform that aims to connect students from underrepresented backgrounds with interest in the veterinary profession to mentors within the field.

Vision

To actively increase the diversity of the veterinary profession through a novel pipeline approach to recruitment and retention.

Strategy

Providing mentors and mentees with a long-term competitive advantage by training all volunteers using our values-driven approach to mentorship and equip this community of leaders with the tools necessary to ensure long-term sustainable mentorship relationships:

· Positive mentoring experiences

· Building a veterinary network

· Developing veterinary and veterinary nurse leaders

· Providing professional development opportunities for mentors and mentees alike

How will we do this?

· Pairing of mentors and mentees using an algorithm weighting the things they consider important in a mentor/ mentee relationship

· A venue for in person and virtual networking opportunities with pre-veterinary students, veterinary students, veterinary nurse students, veterinary nurses, and veterinarians

· Education on careers in veterinary medicine, diversity in the veterinary profession and skills such as mentoring, leadership, time management, financial wellness, and public speaking

Who is Pawsibilities for?

Pre-veterinary students, veterinary students, veterinary nurse students, veterinary nurses, and veterinarians from underrepresented backgrounds. We aim to increase diversity based on gender, race, ethnicity, non-traditional career path, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, and disability status, veteran status.

Survey

A preliminary survey revealed over 170 veterinarians, veterinary students, pre-veterinary students, veterinary nurses, veterinary nurse students in 30 states and 8 countries interested in joining in only a couple of weeks! Of these, 76% would like to be mentors and 56% would like to be mentored. Mentee numbers will increase as we reach out into the pre-veterinary realm.
