Carl just wanted to pop in this morning to say Hi!

Carl was one of the first fox to call Walking Wild home and one of the reasons we rushed and built around the clock to open Walking Wild, so that his life could be saved? That was five years ago and his sweet boy is now 12 years old.

Most of you are aware that our precious daughter Melody passed away last week after an almost year long battle with a rare and very aggressive form of leukemia. Melody was a huge part of Walking Wild and brought a love of animals and a joy to everyone that witness it that can't be described in words. To allow her joy and spirit to continue to fill every square inch of Walking Wild, we are building a memorial here. This memorial will be a place for all who visit to relax, reflect and find joy themselves. If you would like to donate to the memorial please visit

Many of you have asked who Melody's favorite foxes were. To answer that question and pay a special tribute to our sweet little girl, we are going to spend this week sharing the stories of some of the animals she had the strongest bond with here at Walking Wild.

Today's BFF isn't a fox, and it isn't a member of the Walking Wild family that has ever been officially introduced, as she is more behind the scenes. This is Jadis, she is a Great Pyrenees. Jadis and Melody are 1 month and 10 days apart in age. We adopted Jadis when she was four months old. Jadis was being raised to be a livestock guardian, however she was not the livestock guardian kind of girl. She wasn't happy being outside with goats, all she wanted was to be with people and was struggling being separated from them. Because of her desire to be with people rather than guard livestock, she was in need of a new home and we were that home. Jadis and Melody bonded instantly and were inseparable. Melody loved all her animals, but Jadis and her had a different kind of love for each other and it was truly magical.

Today's Melody BFF is Milo. Milo was surrendered to us at just 4 weeks old and he was the first kit Melody really got to interact with. The two of them became fast friends and were the cutest double trouble you will ever see. Milo was surrendered to us a little more than day after a family had purchased him. They realized quickly that they were not able to keep him and that they would not be the best fit for him, which lead them to reach out to us. Milo has remained a sweet and lovable boy and we are so honored to be his forever home.

Today's BFF is Cleo. Cleo was Melody's first fox BFF and they remained extremely close for her entire life. Cleo can be picky about who she likes, but she loved Melody from day one and was always overly gentle, cautious and caring towards her. Cleo was surrendered to Walking Wild at 8 years old because her owner was no longer able to care for her due to health reasons. Cleo is now 12 years old and is a personality filled little old lady. Cleo and Melody had a very special bond and Cleo is working through the mourning process herself. She is one of the fox that knows Melody is gone and she is working through her emotions just like the rest of us.

Today's Melody BFF brings up a flood of emotions. A few days before Melody started her rapid decline, we got a call about a caprice bred kit that had been dropped off at an animal shelter in Indiana and was in need of a safe place to call home. As soon as we got the call we began the process of getting the little one to us. She was being temporarily cared for by a wildlife rehab team. Melody loves all her animals, but babies give her a TON of joy, just like they do us all. When Melody started to decline rapidly we were worried she would not get to have one last time to love on a kit, however thankfully weather cooperated and we had an amazing volunteer pilot, that was able to get baby girl here on time. Melody was in the middle of feeling really cruddy and not having energy to do much other than sleep, but when she saw her new baby fox, life came back to her, and four 10 amazing moments David and I got to see our little girl happy and smiling again. We continued to bring the little kit up to Melody daily, until she passed, because even if she didn't have the strength to sit up, putting on hand on her soft baby coat brought her joy and peace. It's safe to safe this little kit is an amazing blessing in more ways than one.

Today's featured Melody BFF, won't come as a surprise to those of you that have been with us for a while. Today is all about Queen Roz. David and I are pretty sure Roz would have adopted Melody as her own daughter some days if we would have let her. Roz is one of the sweetest and most gentle foxes here at Walking Wild, and you would never expect that with her past. Roz spent 8 years trapped in a fur farm as a breeder. Every year she would have a babies that she loved dearly, only for them to be ripped from her and killed. After 8 years living in the horrific conditions that she did, she arrived at Walking Wild physically broken, but with her spirit fully intact and ready to trust, despite all she had been through. Roz is truly a 1 in a million girl and her bond with Melody was truly magical.

We are going to start this week off with one of Melody’s BFFs, Henry. Henry is one of the sweetest and happiest boys and you would never guess he lived a horrific life before coming to Walking Wild. Henry was a breeding male. After his mate died he had no desire to take another mate, making him no longer usable to the breeder that had him. Red Type Fox are monogamous and many mate for life, so the loss of Henry's mate was something that hit him hard. No longer considered usable he was going to be sold into the fur trade to be killed, thankfully we were able to step in before he was sold and get him surrendered to us. Henry ended up finding a new foxy and human family here at Walking Wild and he is such a sweet and loving boy. We are so happy we were able to save his life.

The Walking Wild family is sending our deepest thoughts and prayers to Freya, Ethan, Mikayla's family and the entire SAF team with the loss of a mom, wife, daughter, friend and animal lover Mikayla.

We first connected with Mikayla before Walking Wild was even a thought, back in 2018, when we adopted this amazing little fox, Banjo. was the introduction into the fox rescue space that caused us to open Walking Wild and we continued to work together through the years. Her loss is tragic and one that will be felt throughout the entire animal rescue space.

Please join us in lifting Mikayla's family and friends up in prayer as they navigate this difficult time.

It is long past time to announce the names of our six little fur farm rescue skunks that joined the Walking Wild family about two months ago. We would like to officially introduce you to our skunky Muppets crew: Camilla, Gonzo, Kermit, Miss Piggy, Janice and Fozzie.

These six sweet little skunks lived in a house of horrors before being rescued and finding their forever home with us at Walking Wild. Confined to tiny wire cages standing on piles of f***s, these six lived on a fur farm. Yes, sadly fur farms are legal and something we have been working to see come to an end in our home state of Ohio as well as the entire country, since our founding over five years ago. Walking Wild is home today, to 73 animals that were rescued from the fur trade.

Last Friday we welcomed a new little face to the Walking Wild family and Melody would like to introduce her to all of you. Name announcement will be coming.

This sweet little girl is 10 weeks old now. We got a message last week about a captive born kit that had been dropped off at an animal shelter due to the lever nor bring able to keep her where they lived, and was in need of a safe place to go. After being dropped off at the animal shelter, she was transferred into the care of a volunteer at a local wildlife rescue who reached out to us. Since this sweet little girl is not a wild animal, she needed to get a sanctuary that was able to provide her the life and care a captive born fox, that is not a wild animal, needs. We are honored to give this little girl her forever home and family here at Walking Wild!

Melody Update: For those of you wondering about how Melody is doing. She has begun declining in health. She spends 99% of her day in her space upstairs due to not being comfortable when moved. Our hospice team is amazing and has gotten her pain managed, but she doesn't have the strength or energy to do much. This interaction with our new little rescue last weekend was the first time Melody had smiled in two days. Melody just loves her animals. Because of the joy the animals bring her, we are brining a few up to see her everyday, as it still is the one thing that always brings her happiness, no matter how cruddy she is feeling. Thank you for your continued prayers. If you would like to help out during this heartbreaking time, you can do so through this link https://walkingwildrescue.org/melody.

The funds being raised are to help us be able to devote as much time and energy as possible to being with Melody and not have to stress over the daily fundraising or pull us away from her to do donor meetings or large projects. We can't thank you enough for your support during this time. As Melody's health continues to fail your support means more to David and I than we can express!

Walking Wild Rescue

Founded in 2020 Walking Wild is a non-profit organization that rescues and provides a safe haven for captive bred fox and wolf dogs. We provide every animal with the love and respect they deserve and educate the public about the cruelty of the fur industry and what the reality of welcoming a fox or wolf dog into your family is.

Foxes: Currently, in the United States, captive bred foxes are being raised two ways, either born on a fur farm to be pelted or bred for the pet industry. Foxes come to Walking Wild from a variety of circumstances. We provide a safe haven for foxes rescued from fur farms, surrendered by owners that are no longer able to care for them and captive bred foxes that have been dumped in the wild and are not able to survive.

Many captive bred foxes are born and raised on a fur farm to be pelted. For foxes born on a fur farm a bleak existence lies ahead of them living in small cages and never touching grass, until they are pelted and hanging in someone’s closet.

Walking Wild will be working with fur farmers around the US to take foxes that they are willing to surrender. These foxes will either be pups that are injured or rejected by their mothers, foxes that are too small, sick, older foxes that are no longer of use to the farmer or foxes with coats that the farmer can’t use.
