Melody and Walking Wild Update

We are still in the hospital with Melody battling her aggressive cancer diagnosis and heart failure.
We are continuing to work towards and pray for a miracle for her.

Our mission hasn't stopped though!

David and I continue to be the primary caretakers and run the daily operations here at Walking Wild, alternating spending late nights at home feeding, cleaning, doing maintenance, enrichment and bonding time with our amazing crew. Even with our daughter's diagnosis and battle, as the owners of a rescue, caring for our animals has to continue on to ensure our rescue is maintaining the level of care and love that it was operating with before Melody's diagnosis.

We have also welcomed 5 little foxes since Melody was admitted to the hospital and are not stopping intaking and saving more lives. There are too many lives that need us.

With no paid staff, including myself, we have been blessed to have the dedication and help of 8 amazing volunteers and my wonderful parents who have been helping with the cleaning and care of our crew so David and I don't have to worry when we are both at the hospital about the crew.

Although the animals care hasn't been affected by this trying time, our fundraising and community outreach has. To try and help with this, one of our AMAZING volunteers has issued a dollar for dollar match challenge. He will be doubling every dollar donated, up to $2500, till the first of the year.

We are 100% dependent on your donations to not only continue to save lives, but also care for the 177 lives in our care that depend on us to provide them with an amazing forever home. Without your support, we can't save lives. This holiday season, we would be honored to have your life-saving support!

It's a Marshmallow Monday. Today, let's learn about one of our favorite species of fox, the Arctic.

It is Oaken's turn to share another fun Arctic fox fact. Did you know an Arctic fox, thanks to its compact build, extra winter weight and crazy dense fur, can maintain a body temperature of 104°F in temperature below -50°F? Because of their ability to stay warm in frigid temperatures, Arctic fox are found in some crazy cold places. If you are wanting to see an Arctic fox in the wild you are going to need to visit the northern most parts of Alaska, Canada, Russia, Fineland, Norway, Russia, Greenland, Iceland, Sweden and one of the world's most northern areas that has a human population, Svalbard.

Stay tuned throughout the day as our Marshmallow crew shares more fun facts.

Did you know Walking Wild is home to more Arctic fox than any other sanctuary in North America. We have 20 adorable Arctic marshmallows that call Walking Wild home.

It's a Marshmallow Monday. Today, let's learn about one of our favorite species of fox, the Arctic.

Elsa and Bo Peep are here to share another fun fact. Unlike a red fox, Arctic fox are nomadic. They can travel over a 100 miles. Many Arctic fox even migrate from their breeding grounds where they spend late spring, summer and early fall, to costal areas where food can be easier to find during the harsh winter as they take advantage of leftovers from larger Arctic friends kills. These migrations and Nomadic travelings aren't done solo. Arctic fox usually move and travel in family groups.

It's a Marshmallow Monday. Today, let's learn about one of our favorite species of fox, the Arctic.

Our old man Maurice is here with your next Arctic fox fun fact. Arctic fox are the only wild canid that get an entirely new coat in an entirely different color twice a year. An Arctic fox's summer coat is a completely different coat than their winter. Arctic fox lose all of their winter coat when getting in their darker and thinner summer coat. They do the same with their summer coat as their lighter and thicker winter coat comes in. The summer coat isn't just hiding under that winter coat it is completely gone until it starts growing back to prepare for the next summer.

Stay tuned throughout the day as our Marshmallow crew shares more fun facts.

It's a Marshmallow Monday. Today, let's learn about one of our favorite species of fox, the Arctic.

Lefou is here with your next fun fact. When you saw this picture, did you think, wow, that is a big fox? Or that fox needs to diet? Well, you are correct that he is big, but it is nothing a diet will change. Arctic fox, in order to stay toasty warm in the Arctics sub zero temps and brutal wind can increase their weight by up to 50%!! Give Lefou a few months, and he will be a lean mean man in his summer body, but for now, he is just an extra fluffy Marshmallow as an Arctic fox should be this time of year!

It's a Marshmallow Monday. Today, let's learn about one of our favorite species of fox, the Arctic.

Elsa is here with your first facts of the day. Arctic fox are a smaller and a very compact species of fox. Usually, the first thing people notice about an Arctic fox that is different than a red is the size of their ears. The Arctics' smaller and extra fuzzy ears help trap heat in their body and ensure their ears stay toasty warm in the Arctic climate that wild Arctic fox are native to. Every aspect of their compact build isn't just adorable, it also serves a very important purpose of keeping them warm.

We have 24 foxes celebrating their first holiday season at home here at Walking Wild.

Nottingham is one of those very special foxes. At just a few months old, Nottingham was abandoned and forgotten. No longer wanted by the person who had purchased him from a breeder, he was left to fend for himself in an environment he was never meant to be in. Desperate for help, he found his way to a good Samaritan who took him in, and then reached out to us at Walking Wild to give Nottingham the love and home he deserves. When Nottingham arrived, he was covered in over a thousand ticks, fleas and small wounds. He also had injured himself, which created a slight leg deformity. Nottingham is a happy and healthy boy now. Although he still has a unique little walk, which he will have for his entire life, Nottingham is doing amazing. He loves everyone and is a HUGE fan of dinner time. He likes to see how many drumsticks he can fit in his mouth. His current record is 4!

Everyone Meet Bing B**g!!!

Bing B**g is the sweetest little boy. He arrived at Walking Wild a few months ago. He was a pet surrender from a family that realized they were not legally able to keep Bing B**g. Looking out for Bing B**gs' best interest, they decided to find a sanctuary for him, and the rest is history! Bing B**g is just about 7 months old. There is nothing he loves more than loving on and getting loved by his people. We are so honored to be able to provide Bing B**g a loving forever home at our sanctuary!!

Bing B**g is a gray species fox and one of four gray species foxes that call Walking Wild home!! Gray foxes are truly unique and special animals. Due to Bing B**gs love of people, he will remain where he is happiest, as one of our house foxes, rather than joining our other three gray foxes.

Have you met Tagalong?

This precious little girl is one of the most unique foxes because of her color morph. Tagalong is a rare captive bred color morph of a red type fox called sapphire. The sapphire color morphs is beautiful, however, in order to create a sapphire colored fox, some pretty unethical and unhealthy breeding has to occur. Because of this, sapphire colored red foxes, sadly, have a very short life expectancy due to multiple health issues caused by poor genetics and unethical breeding. Tagalong is just shy of seven months old. So far, her lab work is showing she is a healthy girl. Other than some seasonal allergies, this sweet little girl is doing grea. We monitor her health very closely as we know things can change quickly and unexpectedly.

Captive bred red fox, like Tagalong, occur in over 70 different color morphs that do not naturally occur in the wild. These color morphs were created through selective and, in some cases, unethical breeding for the purpose of being able to sell their pelts for more money in the fur trade. In most cases, no care was given for health or longevity/quality of life that the breeding that created them could cause. Although beautiful and unique, some captive bred fox begin life with physical challenges due to the breeding that created them.

No matter what comes, we are so happy Tagalong was surrendered to Walking Wild and that we are able to fill her life with the love and care she needs to live here longest and happiest life possible.

Walking Wild Rescue

Founded in 2020 Walking Wild is a non-profit organization that rescues and provides a safe haven for captive bred fox and wolf dogs. We provide every animal with the love and respect they deserve and educate the public about the cruelty of the fur industry and what the reality of welcoming a fox or wolf dog into your family is.

Foxes: Currently, in the United States, captive bred foxes are being raised two ways, either born on a fur farm to be pelted or bred for the pet industry. Foxes come to Walking Wild from a variety of circumstances. We provide a safe haven for foxes rescued from fur farms, surrendered by owners that are no longer able to care for them and captive bred foxes that have been dumped in the wild and are not able to survive.

Many captive bred foxes are born and raised on a fur farm to be pelted. For foxes born on a fur farm a bleak existence lies ahead of them living in small cages and never touching grass, until they are pelted and hanging in someone’s closet.

Walking Wild will be working with fur farmers around the US to take foxes that they are willing to surrender. These foxes will either be pups that are injured or rejected by their mothers, foxes that are too small, sick, older foxes that are no longer of use to the farmer or foxes with coats that the farmer can’t use.
