Lucia's Bird Rescue Mission is now temporarily closed for Autumn and Winter.
Thank you for supporting Lucia in her Dreams. 💖
The next 6 months are now Lucia's time to focus on her Homeschooling and Animal Care studies, spend time with the permanent birds in her care, plan ahead for next season and enjoy some fun childhood experiences away from full-time animal caring.
She will still be attending markets to raise funds to support the birds permanently in her care, so she's not going too far away. It's now her time to have a break before the rush begins in Spring.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Lucia and her Bird Rescue over the last 2 years in between Covid Lockdowns, your support has helped to keep Lucia doing what she loves. Caring for our vulnerable wildlife us what age does best. xx

PS. Lucia is still around to answer messages for help with caring for birds and linking people up with other certified rescues and organisations who care for avian wildlife.

Lucia has a pair of muscovey ducks available that she purchased the fertile eggs to hatch in her Incubator late last year.
1 x drake, 1 x female.
They are looking for a new home. Must stay together. They are pets, not for eating.
A Donation is much appreciated to go toward the cost of Lucia caring for them.

With Omicron spreading rapidly throughout the country & in our local community, we've had to make the hard decision to hold off doing any personalized tours of Lucia's Bird Rescue until further notice. The health and Safety of Lucia and her family have to come first.
We can't risk Lucia or her Mum catching Covid because of the challenges it would create making it difficult continue to keep on top of everyone's care, while coping with getting well.
🐦Contactless drop offs are still available.
🐦Social distancing at markets (we'll still be at the Taupo market at this stage as that's one of Lucia's main sources of funding)
🐦Virtual video tours may also be an option the future too.
Hope everyone understands. 💙

Lucia's having a fabulous day at Market Central Taupō
She's been selling her hand grown plants, supporter tees and caps and has received some lovely donations from people walking by.
The stories being shared with her and the feedback she's getting is extremely heart warming.

The last of Lucia's little sparrows have now been released. That brings her to the end of wild baby bird rescue season. In amongst all the busyness of moving farms and setting back up, Lucia still managed to hold onto her Bird Rescue Dream.

What's next? Well over the next 6 months sheill be focusing on caring for all the permanent residents in her care. And believe me there are alit of them! From special needs birds, to re-homed parrots, abandoned rescues and other rescue animals in her care that don't have feathers. 🐢🐇🐈🦔🐒

She currently has close to 180 mouths to feed and thats not including the special eggs in her Incubator.

Remember Alex & Abby, the elderly pair of Alexandrians?
💚 Look how far they've come 💚
They've finished they're time in quarantine and are now enjoying life together out in a spacious aviary.
Abby's stopped plucking and is growing all her beautiful feathers back. She LOVES eating fresh greens, fruits from your hand and chatting away when you go near her.
It's amazing what a change in diet and environment can do for a birds mental and physical health.
These are two of the many birds at Lucia's Bird Rescue who arrived as either pluckers, malnourished or with some kind of physical disability, who are now on the road to a successful recovery.

PS. If anyone has excess vege produce or fruit off trees that is in need of a new home, Lucia will always be thankful for any donations of produce. As long as it's spray free and doesn't have any rot or mould on it, as that's fatal to the special birds with respiratory issues.

Lucia's motto is:
"If it's not good enough for me to eat then it's not safe for the birds"

Starting the week off with good nutrition.
🥗🌽🥬🍎🥕🧀🍏🍳
🍉🥦🥔🍊🥜🥒🌶️🌿
Birds need more than just seed to thrive and survive. Below is an insight into Lucia's bird feeding list.

This morning was a delicious nutritious serving of chopped up vegetables, a fruit, a carb, something crunchy, a protein, soak'n'sprout, all rinsed in ACV then a liquid bird vitamin mixed in.

All birds in Lucia's care get fresh chop every morning, fresh water in their bowls, seed/pellet bowl turned, a millet once a week, fresh greens from the garden (spinach, silverbeat, kale or puha), bird vitamins 3 times a week, seeded grasses for the smaller finches and parakeets, soft food, crumble, golden mix for the younger ones.
Mealworms and live bugs for the birds that need them for the right proteins, and of course soaked cat biscuits for the new little baby wild birds.
This is just a little insight into one of the things to consider before adopting or buying a bird.
Good Nutrition = Happy Birds 🦜

Note: Do not feed birds Avocado, chocolate, coffee, rhubard leaves or onion.

Meet: "Tammy & London" the first of many little birds knocked out of their nests by the cyclone today.

If you see a nest or babies on the ground and can't safely return it, please take it inside, keep them warm and safe from cats then contact your local bird rescue.
Lucia is available to take in any little babies to care for with drop offs in Tokoroa, South Waikato.

As long as they aren't native birds (they have to go to a DOC registered rescue)

12/02/2022

🙏🏻 Stay Safe everyone🙏🏻

If you have aviaries and animal runs outside make sure that they are fully secured down and protected from not only the rain but the wind from the cyclone.
And if you can, bring your pets inside for Sunday cuddles and watch a movie with them.
If you find any baby birds blown out of trees, please contact me. If I can't help I know others who can.

I'm off to do my chop rounds now.

Thank you for continuing to provide such awesome inspiring camps to kids especially over the last two years with the pandemic.

Introducing the newest mission of Lucia's Bird Rescue. Lucia and her mum are converting an ex party bus into a two rooms for Lucia's rescue birds and her homeschool room.
All seats, except a few that Lucia chose to keep, have been taken out and donated to 883Tamariki in Putaruru.
Floor tracks have been filled and today the sanding of floors starts before painting commences this afternoon.
Lucia has learnt so much about use of different types of tools, how bus seats are connected to their tracks, ratios of making up 'bog', curing times, ventilation and design.
It's a massive project but this mother daughter duo can do almost anything to being Lucia's dreams to fruition.
Here are the Before photos when the bus arrived. We are also looking for curtain tracks/rails if anyone local has some that are in need of a new home. 🙏🏻

**FRUITS N VEGES**
If anyone has excess produce and fruit this season and would like to donate some to Lucias Bird Rescue, she's be so ever grateful.
Every morning ALL birds & poultry get freshly made chop.
This consists of fresh produce from her vege gardens, fruit in season off her tress, frozen mixed veges, soak n sprout mix, either a rice/pasta or couscous, corn on the cob, bird vitamins 3 times a week and the occasional egg for the littlies.
With the supermarkets restrictions on how many items you can buy, the frozen vege bags are what she's currently lacking in at present.

Alternatively Lucia is always in need of all types of bird seeds, sunflower seeds, nuts, crushed corn/maize, cat biscuits, dog roll, paper towels and syringes.
