This weekend, Memphis lost one of its greatest champions in Lucia Gilliland. As one of Overton Park Conservancy's founding board members, Lucia was a fierce advocate for Overton Park, and especially the Old Forest, where she walked almost every day in the 60+ years that she lived in the neighborhood. Lucia gave more park tours than anyone, and our team loved walking in the forest with her. She would remember facts about the forest ecology and summarize them in layman’s terms to explain why this place was so special and needed to be protected. We once gave her a special roll of flagging tape because she discovered a patch of kudzu that we’d missed in our invasive plant removal efforts. Her daily immersion in the space frequently helped us identify issues we could come back and address.

Usually preferring to work behind the scenes, Lucia listened more than she talked in board meetings, but we could always rely on her to speak up in support of keeping Overton Park free and accessible to every Memphian. She understood, and taught the rest of us, that this deep nature experience in the heart of Memphis was something that everyone needed easy access to. We will miss her, and we will honor her memory by sustaining this work she helped us begin.

We URGENTLY need fosters and adopters! We are over capacity and have exhausted all options. We do not want to humanely euthanize adoptable dogs for space, and we know you don't want us to either. If you can open your home to a shelter dog for even just a few weeks, you will help us save more lives! Adoption fees will be waived for urgent dogs TODAY and TOMORROW. You can make a difference in helping these loving pets find their new home!

You can find our available urgent dogs listed at memphisanimalservices.com/adopt/available-pets/dogs-at-mas/. Just filter the results by "attribute" and choose any of the "urgent" attributes!

🇺🇸 Tomorrow is Memorial Day! This time spent gathering with loved ones can sometimes be a little extra stressful for our pets. The extra smells, commotion, and sometimes fireworks can be a lot for our four-legged friends to take in. Check out some useful tips to keep them safe! ⬇️

1️⃣ Plan ahead by exercising your pet, whether it's a long walk or out in the backyard for some extra playtime. Mental stimulation with puzzle toys is also a great way to keep them busy and channel their energy.

2️⃣ Secure fences, ensure doors remain closed, and any potential escape routes have been identified and addressed.

3️⃣ Update their IDs! If your pet is wearing a tag that lists the previous address or an old phone number, now would be the time to get a new one. Even more important, if the pet is microchipped but the information is outdated, update it through the website that the microchip is registered with. If the pet was adopted from MAS, you can update those microchips at Found.org.

4️⃣ Minimize noise by turning on the TV or radio, a fan, or a white noise machine. A familiar drone can help distract them and provide some measure of comfort.

5️⃣ Settle in and cuddle up! If you don't have plans for the holiday, make plans with your pet. They'll be happy for the extra time spent with their best friend.

➡️ If you are spending time with family and friends tomorrow, here are some other things to keep in mind:

1️⃣ Keep your pet hydrated and cool! Pets can overheat very easily in warm weather, so be sure to have plenty of water on hand and bring a water bowl. Offer water frequently, and find a shady spot for them to relax in if you won't be indoors.

2️⃣ If small children are present, ensure that you are keeping an eye on your pet when they are nearby. Even the friendliest of pets can sometimes feel overstimulated, especially with lots of activity, and they may not feel up to socializing. Recognize signs of stress, such as frequent yawning, licking lips and nose, panting, or growling as a warning.

3️⃣ Sharing yummy food can be tempting, but it's best to stick to your pet's diet. There may be ingredients in homemade dishes that can be toxic to your pet.

As we embrace the settling in of the spring season, it's important to prepare our pets for the changing weather too. Here are some quick tips for May’s :

💧Hydration is Key
Always ensure your pet has access to fresh water, especially during outings.
Shade and Shelter: Provide ample shade and a cool, ventilated area where pets can escape the midday sun

☀️Overheating Prevention
Watch for signs of overheating during playtime or walks; early morning or late evening are cooler times for activities

🛡️Flea and Tick Protection
Spring brings about pesky parasites; make sure your pet’s flea and tick preventatives are up to date

🐾Paw Care
The ground can get hot quickly; check the pavement temperature with your hand. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet's paws
