CATS RULE FelineRescue CATS RULE! Hello Visitors & Friends,

CATS RULE! We started as a TNR/cat rescue group, doing lots of adoptions & outreach.

Feline Rescue >^..^<
A no kill, all volunteer, 501c3 rescue & advocacy organization
Providing rescue, sanctuary, hospice & a loving home for Feline Leukemia positive cats & kittens
Founded 2002, IRS approved 2006 Feline Rescue is a small no kill, all volunteer, sanctuary for Feline Leukemia positive cats & kittens in the Northern Virginia countryside. We also care for a group of feral cats, forme

r ferals & unadopted friendlies who have been with us over 10 years, & several dogs. After the economic crash of 2008, adoptions ground to a halt & our remaining adoptables became permanent family members. We had to scale back intake but we still assist with rescue where we can, lend out humane traps, advise & advocate on animal issues, etc. We are a small crew & can't respond to every e'mail. We will try to provide information through this FB page, as our former website is very out of date (obsolete software on an ancient system). It has some good resources, info on feral cats, etc.: www.catsrule.org

Our focus is now providing a place for FLV+ felines which sadly, few people will adopt & who are routinely put down at shelters. Shelters & rescues contact us when a cat/kitten turns up positive at testing. We give the kittens a happy, loving home until they tragically succumb to this horrible disease, usually between 1-3 years old. There is no cure for Feline Leukemia, but adult cats can live full lives without falling ill.

–– Currently both our FLV+ ADULT room & our FLV+ KITTEN rooms are full. ––

We take in FLV+ KITTENS (under 3yo, double tested, spayed/neutered, surrender fee is requested) when we have room. All donations are tax-deductible & greatly appreciated. Sincere thanks to all our friends for your support of CR!FR & for helping us care for animals in need!

Hello Friends!
Their Voice Rescue is a new group in the Manassas area that is doing amazing work caring for injured homeless cats, feeding/TNR'g unhoused cats & rescuing homeless kittens. With established groups already at/over capacity & stressed/exhausted, it's especially wonderful to welcome a new group with the drive, commitment & huge heart it takes to make a difference!
Please donate if you can, let's double their goal so TVR can help more homeless cats this winter! Many sincere thanks! 🐾💗✨

Sadly, we discovered today that a fantastic, super well built, solid cat cabin that was offered to us has termites in the floor & walls 😿 We were short of help to lift the massive structure so we disassembled it & found widespread infestation behind the paneling & in the insulation. It was heartbreaking but we had to decline the thoughtful donation. It was decided to bring the pieces to the landfill 😞
Sharing as a cautionary tale; we would never have known about the termites had we brought the structure intact to our property.💔

A large project that has occupied our attention lately concerns our feral cat colony in Manassas, who we’ve been feeding & caring for for 4 years. They’re all TNR’d & are a stable colony. Unfortunately the HOA of the neighborhood is scapegoating the cats for other issues in the neighborhood & I was threatened with arrest if I’m seen in the neighborhood. Needless to say, I have not abandoned the cats. We’re constructing a large enclosure for them at HQ, anticipating the need to remove the cats for their safety. We’ll be able to house them while locating barn homes for them. We’re converting a large chicken coop I got intended for rooster rescue for the cats. 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

I was at the PW Shelter picking up some feral cats for Dewey Animals & met a lady who was there to surrender her bunny but was late due to traffic & missed her appointment. She was in a bind & I racked my brain to figure out where I could house a bunny at CR!FR HQ.

I brought the bunny home & found him a spot. This is Kevin, a very cute & friendly Netherland Dwarf rabbit. I loved caring for him & got expert advice from a client who has a bunny. But due to being stretched too thin with cats, I asked Friends of Rabbits if they could take Kevin into their adoption program. Kevin is now neutered, vetted & ready for his forever home!

You may remember my mentioning the “McRae ferals”, a small colony of 4 young cats across from the main colony I care for in Manassas. They were born at a residence there but were put outside as kittens & abandoned. When I first saw them in 8/20, they were starving & underweight. I fed them daily, got them TNR’d & found they were more friendly than feral but a bit shy. A lady found a home for 1 kitty (who she said was the mama), & this summer I brought the 3 siblings to CR!FR HQ.

Spike, Mike & Nike have been in my bedroom getting used to indoor living & are ready for adoption! They’re a bit shy with strangers but are very affectionate & sweet once they get to know you. They’re bonded & very close. Finding a home for 3 shy young adults is a tall order but they must go together & the right person will see why! 🐾🐾🐾

This is Grumpy Gus, a feral whose caretaker had to move away temporarily for work. We agreed to house Gus for 6 weeks until she returned but after 4 months we realized we needed to find a barn home for Gus. He had a double large crate set up but grew increasingly stressed. Thank goodness for Must Love Cats, who helped Gus find a barn home! 🐾

We heard about 2 roosters at the Philadelphia municipal shelter who needed a home. Roosters are hard to place because they are of little value to most people as they don’t lay eggs, they’re loud & are often aggressive. I called around to several neighbors who keep hens & lucked out when Norman said he could take them. Norman has a large flock & takes great care of his birds 🐓🐓

✨Greetings Friends!✨

Long time, hope all have been well! Apologies for the lack of updates, I didn’t mean to fall off the FB map for this long. Truthfully, after 20 years of non-stop rescue, burnout has caught up with me. Feeling overwhelmed is typical in rescue but it was really time to try to step back a little.

CR!FR has continued to care for our resident FeLV+ & FeLV- cats, to care for our feral colonies in Manassas, to work with other local rescue groups, to advocate & assist with local cases, etc. We welcomed several new FeLVies, rescued 2 roosters & a bunny, made improvements at CR!FR HQ, & are currently focused on constructing accommodations for a feral colony who has drawn the ire of the HOA.

Rescue never sleeps! Never mind a pandemic, exhaustion or any range of challenges. I know all rescues are also dealing with similar issues. I just want to let you know we’re still here, still active & doing our best to help cats & animals of all kinds while keeping our sanity & health in tact. We’re vaccinated & will continue to be cautious so we can be here for the animals & people who need assistance. Please take care of yourselves, stay safe & keep well! 🐾💓✨

FYI!

A class action lawsuit has been filed against the makers of Seresto flea and tick collars for false advertising, fraudulent misrepresentation, and other consumer protection claims. Plaintiffs allege that “there have been over 75,000 incident reports, at least 1,698 pet deaths, and close to 1,000 reports of harm to animal caregivers from the introduction of the Seresto collar Products in 2012””: https://bit.ly/3rC9a6w. Among the deaths, according to plaintiffs, is Tigger (pictured here).

As noted in a prior USA Today report, people have reported harm, too, especially those who sleep in the same bed with animals wearing the pesticide collars: “Between 2013 and 2018, 907 incidents were reported with humans, according to a September 2019 EPA assessment of human health risk”: http://bit.ly/3baM5D2.

One of those interviewed by the author of that report was Rhonda Bomwell. According to Bomwell, she “had never used a flea and tick collar before. Pierre, her 9-year-old Papillon... was mostly an indoor animal.

“Still, her veterinarian recommended she purchase one, so Bomwell went to the pet store near her home in Somerset, New Jersey, and selected Bayer’s Seresto collar.

“A day later, on June 2, 2020, Pierre had a seizure, collapsing while Bomwell was making dinner. Lying on his back, the dog stopped breathing and his eyes rolled back.”

Bomwell “rushed him to the hospital… [but] Pierre died before he could receive medical treatment..”

The company vigorous denies the allegations, saying the complaints represent “the number of reports received, and do not reflect causality”: http://bit.ly/3e6sGVB. Others have called the reports that the pesticides in the collars caused deaths and injuries “fact-challenged” and “unproven”: https://bit.ly/2QSiqab.

A court will referee the dispute.

Pesticide “Pet collars are big business. In its 2019 annual report, German agribusiness and pharmaceutical company Bayer reported revenue of more than $300 million on Seresto alone…” before selling the brand to Elanco Animal Health, Inc.

And there is little financial downside. While they are making hundreds of millions annually, even if the companies that sell pesticide collars were to be sued and found liable, they will almost certainly argue in court that the animal has no real value. They will instead likely claim — as other companies such as pet food manufacturers and veterinarians who have been sued and found liable for harming animals have before them — that a dog (or cat or other beloved animal companion) is like a toaster: if you break it, you just throw it away and get a new one. In this claim, they will be supported by groups like the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Kennel Club: http://bit.ly/2UJHh0W. And, tragically, most courts will agree with them. Class action certification would allow the matter to be litigated at one time, rather than piecemeal (unless class members opt out) and also get around those “market value” limitations.

The complaint in Vargas v. Elanco Animal Health, Inc., is here: https://bit.ly/3rC9a6w.

3-21-21 — CR!FR is primarily a cat rescue but we advocate for & assist any & all species whenever possible! Very happy to help these 2 roosters find a safe landing place - from the municipal shelter in Philadelphia to our neighbor Norman’s flock in Brentsville, Va!
Thank you to Sarah Barnett & the folks at Philly ACCT, & volunteer driver & cool gal Colleen Quigley who drove the roos to our meet up spot in Baltimore.
On the drive to Va, they were mostly quiet but when we’d stop at a light, one bird would crow several times.
At Norman’s they were set up in separate coops because of the likelihood they were used in c**k fighting. Hoping they’ll integrate peacefully with Norman’s large beautiful flock 🐓🐓🐓💚💚💚

Construction update on the new PW shelter:

As of the start of the new year, the Animal Shelter construction progress is approximately 44 percent complete. The exterior masonry walls and structural steel installation (including roof decking) are substantially complete. The interior masonry walls and metal stud wall installation are now in progress. Roofing is scheduled to begin in February with the intent to make the building weathertight in March. To stay updated with the progress of the new shelter visit: https://www.pwcgov.org/government/dept/publicworks/Pages/Animal-Shelter-Updates.aspx
