Long post alert….
Being a breeder comes with a LOT of ups and downs. Luckily more happy times than sad, but the sad times are still tough to get through. As we all know Calypso and Lyra had babies 8 days apart. This was a first for my small cattery. Two litters at once. I was thankful that they were both manageable litters for each mama. Unfortunately, Lyra became very sick, very fast. She is currently in ICU getting the medical care she needs. They are cautiously optimistic for her recovery, even if it’s a long one. (A huge shout out to the Veterinarians, nurses and vet techs for the amazing care)
The universe works in mysterious ways. I normally would not have more than one litter at a time, but thankfully, I happen to have a second mama with kittens close in age. I decided to introduce Lyra’s boys to Calypso to see if she would be willing to help out some babies that aren’t actually hers. I must say, it was one of the most emotional moments I’ve gotten to experience. Calypso is a first time mom, so still figuring out the chaos of being a mom. She saw the babies and immediately started licking them and purring and laid down to let them nurse. It took all of 5 minutes for her to have fully accepted these babies. They are now her babies and it’s like she’s had them the entire time. She is so attentive to all of them and all babies are cuddling with each other. It’s going to take a few days for a new routine to settle in and her milk supply to increase, but so far everyone baby is happy and healthy. They are all reaching the milestones I would expect for their ages too.
Love knows no bounds and it has been an incredible experience being able to witness a first time mom adopt three precious babies in need of a new mama. Unconditional love is an amazing thing.
There are no words to express my endless gratitude to Calypso and her selflessness in adopting the boys. Even though my heart is sad, it is also full of love and admiration.
I will give updates on my poor Lyra from time to time. If she does pull through, she will be retired and become a spoiled pet princess.
