Did you know that from June until early September is breeding season for Echidnas?! 🦔
You may have noticed more of them out and about at the moment, our very own Bec found one in her garden the other night!
While echidnas are very fascinating creatures, we must be mindful in not disturbing them and allowing them the space they need to nest and relocate themselves when the time comes.
Some things to keep in mind:
🦔 Nesting sites
Female echidnas will create a temporary nest by digging in quiet areas, if you see one, try your best to avoid disturbing them.
🦔 Road safety
During breeding season they may cross the road more frequently and at any point during the day or night, keep an eye out and drive carefully.
🦔 Echidnas and pets
If you find an echidna in your yard, please make sure all of your cats and dogs are inside to avoid injury.
Some fun facts!
⭐️ Echidnas one of only two mammals in the world that lay eggs!
⭐️ Baby echidnas are called puggles.
⭐️ Echidnas don’t have teeth; they actually have hard pads on their tongues that they use to grind their food with!
If you see an echidna, please don’t attempt to relocate them on your own, if they look as though they are distressed or injured, please call your local wildlife group.

This week we're learning how to stay!
🐕 Ask your dog to sit/stand in front of you and working on keeping their focus, stay firmly in place and give your cue ‘stay’. Wait 1 second, mark and reward then repeat.
🐕 Slowly begin to extend the duration e.g., wait 2 seconds, then 3, then 4 and so on. Once they can hold their stay for 5 seconds or longer you can begin to add in some distance.
🐕Give your cue, take a small step back then immediately move back into position, mark and reward then repeat.

This week we're learning paw!
🐕 Sit in front of your dog and have a treat held in a closed fist, place it in front of their nose. They will sniff, lick and nibble at your fingers, I only want you to react when they start to paw at your hand.
🐕 Mark the behaviour using your verbal word such as ‘yes’ or a sound such as a ‘whistle’ or by using a clicker.
🐕 Reward the behaviour using your dog’s motivator, in this example my dog’s motivator is food, you can also use things such as toys, play or just some praise. Whatever is most enticing and rewarding for your dog.
🐕 Begin to add in your verbal cue ‘paw’ continue to repeat your cue each time you lure them into position, over time they will begin to associate the work with the action.
🐕 Most importantly, have fun with it! these are really fun ways to build and strengthen the bond between you and your dog!

🐕 Start with your dog in a sit, place a treat in front of their nose and slowly lower it to the ground to rest between their paws, this will prompt them to bring their nose down to it.
🐕 Slowly pull the treat towards yourself, this will prompt them to bend their elbows and bring their whole body down to the ground.
🐕 Once they are laying down, mark the behaviour using your verbal word such as ‘yes’ or a sound such as a ‘whistle’ or by using a clicker.
🐕 Reward the behaviour using your dog’s motivator, in this example my dog’s motivator is food, you can also use things such as toys, play or just some praise. Whatever is most enticing and rewarding for your dog.
🐕 Begin to add in your verbal cue ‘spin’ continue to repeat your cue each time you lure them into position, over time they will begin to associate the work with the action.
🐕 Once the association happens you can begin to fade out your lure, this means you’ll be able to give the command and your dog will perform the action without an motivation, we still always want to reward.

1. Stand in front of your dog and holding a treat, place it in front of their nose and very slowly begin to move it out and away from your body in a circular motion, this will prompt them to follow the treat.
2. Keep moving the treat until you’ve done a full circle around your dog and back to you. It may take a few tries before they understand it, the aim is to move as slowly as you can so they easily follow it, if you move to quickly, you can cause confusion.
3. Mark the behaviour using your verbal word such as ‘yes’ or a sound such as a ‘whistle’ or by using a clicker.
4. Reward the behaviour using your dogs motivator, in this example my dog’s motivator is food, you can also use things such as toys, play or just some praise. What ever is most enticing and rewarding for your dog.
5. Begin to add in your verbal cue ‘spin’ continue to repeat your cue each time you lure them into position, over time they will begin to associate the work with the action.
6. Once the association happens you can begin to fade out your lure, this means you’ll be able to give the command and your dog will perform the action without an motivation, we still always want to reward.
