Yesterday was GroomAPalooza at Miri’s Haven HQ and Oswald came through with the Sarah McLachlan pitiful looks. 🙁😒😖😩

Oswald’s superior genetics and enviable body style leaves him the talk of the town no matter how his hair looks, but luckily Jessie Palmer groomed him to PAWfection. ✨

She’s one of our top tier volunteer groomers and she revealed a rotund loaf beneath that long fur. If you’ve never met Oswald he’s built like a can of cranberry sauce, with the coloring of the brown bread loaf at Outback Steakhouse. 🤷🏼‍♀️

She arrived with tears in her eyes. 🥺

Hallie joined us yesterday after her owner joined their previous pups at the rainbow bridge. 🌈 She found herself with nowhere to go, and so much confusion. 💔 The most devastating thing though are the scars that line her back from horrific burns she suffered from a heating pad during her spay surgery, as she lay unconscious. Her owner loved her enough to get her spayed, and must have been devastated to see the scars she would bear for the rest of her life. It is difficult to process, even now seeing them healed.

She is shy and but so sweet and about 12 years old. She also recently started a new diet for kidney disease that she’s enjoying alright. She seems to hear and see a little but not well. She has also done great with the other dogs at HQ and seems housebroken so far! 🙏

Hallie has cycled through elderly owners, each passing away and passing her on to the next. Though they loved her so, she has not had the consistency every dog deserves, and every hooman craves. We are ready to give her her furever home with no more upheaval and tragedy, only peace and stability. 💜

🐾 🐾 THE RESULTS ARE IN: A PUPDATE 🐾🐾

Alumni Nacho got some interesting DNA results, and he didn’t even have to get Maury Povich involved. 🤷🏼‍♀️ His mom gave him the middle name “Bidnis” because he always needs to know what the neighbors are doing! 🐶

Nacho may be 13 but he loves to race his furbrother Cody who is 5 and keeps up with him! Mom said many times she turns around and Nacho is standing right there! He keeps an eye on mom and all these neighbor people.

His furever mom had his DNA run to check his breed and age and, what a surprise! We did not expect to see dachshund in there with his long baby deer legs. 🦌

Mila put on her best Miri’s Haven purple tee to pregame for her meet and greet yesterday, made sure her new snoot hairs were looking fine, and told herself, “I do a look good. I do a feel good. I am da winner.” 🏆 She may have some neurological deficits, but there’s no stopping the power of a positive attitude.

Together with her new fur sibling they became the Googly Eye Brigade! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻

Happy tails to Mila and her new family so full of love! We couldn’t have found a better match for these twinning pups. Mila, you look so beautiful with your snoot hair grown in. We are just so proud of you. 🙏🐶💜

Heartbreaking loss, not once but twice. This sweet couple submitted their application, and spent several weeks going through our process to adopt Mindy. We were devastated when we had to tell them that Mindy, who they had been so excited to love, crossed the rainbow bridge. 🌈 It was a very difficult conversation to have knowing that this couple had already lost one dog during the application process with another rescue. Both times they hoped for a special needs pup to love in their final chapter and both times they were robbed of that excitement.

💜 Until yesterday 💜

Despite those two losses, they were ready to love a pup so faithfully, and they wanted to meet The Bean. 🫘 🏡 🥹

Yesterday, they and one of their four furbabies drove nearly three hours to meet Lila and whisk her off into the sunset. 🌅 Her new family travels in an RV for every vacation so they can take their dogs with them, so Lila is in for an exciting and loving retirement! 🚌

This is exactly the life we envisioned for this happy, long legged babe. 🐩 Happy trails, Lila! 🐾 💜 You deserve this beautiful life, and so do your new PAWrents. We are so grateful for their heart for senior dogs. 🐶

🌈 Farewell to Our Beloved Penelope 🌈

It’s with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our sweet Penelope. Over the last week, she experienced a sudden decline, struggling to keep up with her usual spirit. Her back legs were giving out, and despite her love for treats and meals, she wasn’t eating like before.

After a visit to the vet, we learned her blood pressure and heart rate were low, and she had lost almost 4 pounds. It became clear that her little life had finally provided everything she needed, and she was ready to go. We didn’t want her to suffer any longer, so we gave her the final kindness and helped her to cross the bridge, giving her a peaceful and gentle goodbye. 🌈 We are grateful to have been by her side, and we find comfort knowing she’s at peace now, free from any pain.

Thank you to everyone who loved and supported her along her journey. She was lucky to have you all in her life, as we were to have her. 💔🐾

Run free, sweet girl. You’re free to bark as much as you please now with no one trying to shush you. 🙏

🐾 Flashback Friday: Seymour’s Journey to Love and Health 🐾

Today we’re celebrating Seymour, a sweet senior who came into our care a year ago in desperate need. When he first arrived, Seymour was unrecognizable—filthy, covered in matted fur, and struggling with several medical issues. But thanks to the unwavering support of our community, we were able to give him the care he deserved.

Today, Seymour is thriving in his loving forever home, showing everyone that every dog, no matter their past, deserves a second chance. He was even adopted by second time adopters, making his story that much more heartwarming. 💜

Happy Howloween 🎃 from Lila Bean 🫘 and her foster brother Wetzel Pretzel 🥨 who won third place in the "Cutest Pooch" category at a Halloween costume contest at Aslin Beer Company in DC!

Beanie Baby and Beanie Buddy were a hit! Their tags had a QR code on the back that linked to the Miri's donation webpage. 💜

Our fosters are paws down the best in rescue. We couldn’t ask for more thoughtful, loving, attentive folks to love on these old dogs. 🐶

‼️ TRIGGER WARNING - Please Help‼️

We know this is so unsettling, but we try to honor each of the dogs in our care by showing you their reality - even when it is gruesome and nauseating. It’s never to sensationalize, or traumatize our fans and frens - only to educate and try to save more senior dogs. We have to stop allowing things like this to take place in our beloved pets.

Papi had his neuter and a very intense dental yesterday. ✂️ 🦷 They pulled all his teeth except for one beautiful pearly white. The vet was worried that his jaw would break, something we often have to weigh with seniors who often have had little to no dental care. The jaw can begin to decay, causing it to be very fragile. Dentals of this nature require a board certified surgeon with more experience than a normal vet. These dentals can become very expensive, but you can see how rotted Papi’s mouth had become. Without this chance, he would have continued to live in severe pain. 💔

Poor bub had ulcers inside his mouth from the calculus rubbing. You can see the buildup of plaque and rot in the photos - it was astounding, and very painful for Papi.

He’s finally home now and resting - He even had dinner and then begged for more! A wonderful sign that even after major surgery, he is in less pain than he was with a mouth full of rotten teeth that held him back. This little dude is absolutely amazing. 💜

We are so excited to announce that he will be having a meet and greet as soon as he’s up to it - we are aiming for the weekend! Keep sending Papi your well wishes and prayers! 🙏

If you’re able to send some monies for his very expensive dental, it would help greatly. We are a debt free, all volunteer rescue so we pay our vets promptly for their lifesaving work. All donations go to the care of our amazing pups - breathing new life into each of them.

Props to Mimi! She was the sweetest girl tonight at Paw-O-Ween. She said hi to a ton of dogs and hoomans and was so well behaved. 💕 She even was took treats from volunteer Cary in the most gentle way. She’s one lovely dog. 🐶

You may remember Mimi from early this year. We welcomed her, got her the procedures she needed to have a long and wonderful life, and found her a furever home. She survived major surgeries, and found love but unfortunately her time at her first furever home came to an end. She rejoined us a few days ago after her family expressed she was unhappy with their other dogs.

We are hoping to get her settled in and loving life again. At the Haven we work extremely hard vetting our adopters. If you’ve gone through our process, you know it can be a doozy! We pour love, many tears, and a lot of funding into giving our pups new lives and the BEST medical care, so we are very particular about how their lives go. 🙏 It’s rare, but occasionally things aren’t a good fit, and we are ALWAYS ready to welcome one of our alumni back, in fact it’s in the contract! 📝

Meet Petey, a 14-year-old pup who has overcome adversity and is still seeking a forever home! 🏡 His transformation since his shelter days is remarkable. It’s been two months, and he already has a full coat of luxurious hair, and holds his head a bit higher. 💜

This laid-back, easy-going companion enjoys crossword puzzles with his morning pup cups and has a flair for magic, topped off with his signature hat! Although blind, Petey navigates with ease, loves backyard adventures, and gets along with all dogs. He's ready to find his forever home! 💜

Wandering the streets of Baltimore, Maryland 💔

Human cruelty is simply astounding. It seems to know no bounds, and often times there are little repercussions. In a world where putting your very old, half blind dog outside and never letting them in ~ we are trying to be the neighbors who let every dog in for respite.

Meet Grammy - she’s only 11 pounds of mostly flea dermatitis. Her hair is sparse and lackluster, and her overgrown nails twist in directions they simply shouldn’t. At 15-years-old, poor, sweet Grammy was found by a Good Samaritan in the middle of a busy Baltimore street. She could have been killed or abused. Her humans had so little care for her, they didn’t even make sure she didn’t suffer needlessly.

Surprisingly, despite her extreme anxiety in the shelter, she is friendly and easy to handle. She’s very quiet and confused, understandably so. She seems very shut down, and in the dark place where we question their ability to overcome. 💔 We are holding space for Grams until she can hold her own though and we need help. 🙏

The shelter vets noted that Grammy has multi-joint arthritis, cataracts, severe fleas and flea dermatitis, and otitis. She had her ears cleaned and she was started on ear drops. She was also prescribed fatty acids to support her joints, and pain management is recommended for her arthritic and painful joints.

We need all paws on deck to help Grammy become a dog with hope, and we know our fans and frens will want to tune in to this transFURmation. Please help if you’re able. 🙏

🚙 NEW ARRIVAL 🚙

Arrow is a handsome little lad with impressive ear span who arrived a week ago with the worst diarrhea we’ve ever experienced. 💩 💔

We got him immediate medical care, and found no real answers as to the source. He had no parasites and no infections. Our hearts hurt considering that he may be stressed beyond belief due to the changes in his little life.

Luckily, he is improving! Foster mama added that to her gratitude list for the day, because bub was making a MESS! 😬 We did learn that he has a heart murmur and some eye issues. We are working on all of his vetting, and allowing him to decompress before finding him a furever home. 🙏

Go Izzie Go! 💨 Izzie isn’t letting anything get in the way of some big time FUN these days. She came to use suffering from untreated Cushings disease, with yucky fur and teeth. 🦷 We have been chipping away at the Cushings beast with nutritional food and supplements, and things are working! This is the first time I’ve heard Petey bark! He was demanding his dinner and a ride to his bowl. It’s such a relief that he’s feeling good enough to voice his demands now! 💜 He also had vet checkup today and they said his eye that’s had a graft is looking good, though it’s very graphic 💔 and his no-eye also looks to be healing well. 💜 He was also a good support dog for a very nervous husky at the vet, doing his part to help the community.
