Dog depression timebomb as study pinpoints major Covid problem - new tips to help pets

EXPERTS warn dog owners of increased anxiety, depression and an "unprecedented" rise of aggression in their pets, as more people return to work.

New research by 4lite reveals more than 80 percent of owners are now concerned and worried about leaving their dogs home alone. This comes as new data shows more dogs have started exhibiting concerning behaviours, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Missing Dog Saves Virginia Family from House Fire Before Reuniting with Owners 🐶

Butter the dog barked at the windows of a burning home in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, until the owners woke up and escaped safely.

A family from Big Stone Gap, Virginia, discovered that the stray dog hanging out near their home is a hero in disguise.

According to WJHL, Charity Golloway and her two children are praising a pooch they call Butter for saving their lives. Butter is a dog that recently started spending time around Golloway's home. Assuming the dog was a stray, Golloway got an outdoor shelter with an electric lamp for the canine.

On Thursday, the lamp in Butter's shelter caught fire, and soon the flames spread to Golloway's home. In response, Butter ran to the home's windows and started barking loudly.

"He knew something wasn't right and that someone needed to know," Golloway told WJHL. "He's a smart dog."

The dog's barks woke up Golloway, who arose in time to hear the heat of the flames burst a window in her home.

Golloway and her kids ran out of the house and were able to stop the fire before it grew larger. Thanks to Butter's quick thinking, no one was hurt.

Lollypop Farm shows how to save a pet in an emergency

The Bee Gees’ “Staying Alive” plays as three adults pump the chests of stuffed-animal Dalmatians to the beat of the 1970s disco hit.

“It’s hard, right?" Humane Society educator Kim Ferris-Church asks the group. “Think about doing this for 15 minutes. It’s a lot of energy you’re using.”

This is a pet CPR and first aid class offered at the local humane society, Lollypop Farm, just in time for the holiday season -- a time when animal experts warn that pet emergencies related to things like decorations, human food, and gatherings can happen.

Ferris-Church leads the small group through CPR, first aid, and Heimlich maneuver techniques on life-sized stuffed animals - a dog and a cat for each student.

Audrey Kramer, a cat behavioral specialist, has been through this before – both during a previous training at Lollypop, where she works, and in a true emergency.

Does ‘Dogsomnia’ Keep You Up at Night?

Every night around 2 a.m., my sleeping partner wakes me up because she’s thirsty and needs a bathroom break. Fortunately for her, she has no trouble going back to sleep. I know this because after this nightly ritual, I’m often wide-awake, listening to her gentle snores.

Pet care company creates app to help find missing pets

More than 10 million dogs become lost in the U.S. every year and many of them end up in shelters.

A Franklin-based pet care company is using a dog’s nose prints to find missing pets if they wander from home.

Just like a human’s fingerprint, dogs can be identified by their nose print since they are all unique.

Iams, a brand of Mars Petcare, created an app called NOSEiD where you can make a profile for your dog and scan their nose.

“this is a first, so we had to work with app developers and people who, in humans when they do facial recognition technology, to develop the code that could scan, then recognize a dog’s nose, and then make that work through this app,” Melonie Nye, senior marketing director for Mars Petcare dog food brands, said.

If your furry friend is ever lost, you can report it on the app. Your neighbors will be alerted, and they can contact you through the app if they find your dog.

40 Percent of Pet Parents Say that Caring for a Pet Is as Costly as Raising a Kid

Most pet owners spare no expense when it comes to their furry family members.

The average pet owner spends over $4,500 on their pet's basic needs every year, according to new research. Two in five pet parents agree that having a pet is just as, if not more, expensive than raising a child, and 61% confirm that having a pet is more costly than they initially thought.

A survey of 2,000 dog and cat owners looked at their spending habits regarding their furry companions and found that half of the respondents said they spend more money on their pets every year than they do on themselves.

Conducted by OnePoll in partnership with MetLife for Pet Wellness Month, the survey also found that three in five pet parents specifically allocate about $200 from each paycheck just for their pet's necessities.

Sleep with your pet? How that may affect you (and your pet)

In the quest for better sleep, people often ask if they should share their bed with a pet. Before we get to that, let's take a moment to ponder the flip side:

Is sleeping with you good for your pet?
The benefits of owning a pet -- and the surprising science behind it

"I love that we're reversing the question," said Dr. Dana Varble, the chief veterinary officer for the North American Veterinary Community. "In general, it is a very good thing for animals to sleep with their people."

Pets who share their human's bed tend to have a "higher trust level and a tighter bond with the humans that are in their lives. It's a big display of trust on their part," Varble said.

Covid linked to heart inflammation in cats and dogs

Late last year, as the coronavirus surged across the United Kingdom, Dr. Luca Ferasin and his colleagues started noticing an uptick in patients with symptoms of myocarditis, or heart inflammation.

The condition is a rare side effect of the mRNA Covid-19 vaccines, most commonly seen in men under 30. It can also be caused by infection with the virus itself.

But these patients weren’t humans; they were cats and dogs.

A more comfortable goodbye? Vets bring pet euthanasia home

Clarence the giant schnauzer came into Penny Wagner’s life as a puppy nearly eight years ago, at a traumatic time for her family.

She and her husband, Steve, had recently lost their 21-year-old daughter in a car accident. Soon after, their other child went off to college and Steve returned to work, leaving Penny home alone with her grief. That’s when they brought Clarence into the family.

Earlier this year, the beloved pet became critically ill with advanced kidney disease. Their veterinarian wouldn’t allow them to stay with him until the end at the clinic due to COVID protocols, so they decided to have him put down at home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in a favorite laundry room spot.

A vet working with a company called Pet Loss at Home arrived and greeted Clarence and the Wagners. She gave the couple all the time they needed before administering two injections, one to relax the 90-pound dog and the other to let him go. The couple cuddled him as they cried, and their other dog, Cooper, was able to say goodbye as well.

Pawternity leave is a step too far in the pandemic pet boom

A third of UK workers would consider changing jobs rather than work with an unvaccinated colleague, a survey claimed last week.

But what if that colleague also had claws? And a tendency to drool, nip and swipe your unguarded lunch?

If you thought the push to bring dogs to work was annoying before Covid-19, brace yourself.

The explosion of pandemic pet ownership is set to hit the workplace in ways that once would have seemed unimaginable.

Let me say here that I am petless but deeply pro-pet.

If I lived in a larger home in London, I would have joined the 3.2m Brits who have acquired a pet since lockdown — preferably a dog or cat and ideally one of each.

The queen has left the building!

A two-year-old dog named Prudence found her forever home after spending nearly half her life living at the SPCA Cincinnati animal shelter.

Last week, the facility announced that a loving family adopted the 55-pound dog after her 220-day stay at the Ohio facility.

"Her family is AMAZING. Prudence was instantly in LOVE. Our hearts are soooo FULL! Although we will miss her dearly, we are so happy and emotional to say that she has found her FOREVER," the SPCA wrote on Facebook.

Blind dog once used as target practice now brings comfort to others as therapy dog

Instagram star "Maggie the Wunderdog" loves people and spreads cheer as a therapy dog in the U.K.

Nearly three years ago when British dog behaviorist Kasey Carlin arrived at Heathrow Airport to meet a rescue dog flown in from Lebanon, she thought the airport staff brought her the wrong dog. She knew the mixed-breed dog had been horribly abused and expected to see signs of trauma.

“There’s this little blond dog kicking her feet up high,” Carlin, 27, told TODAY. “The first thing she does when she meets anybody is she runs into them and rubs her body on them like a cat does. My brain couldn’t even process it. She’s just so friendly.”

2 Maryland pet stores banned from selling puppies

Two Maryland pet stores that specialize in puppy sales will no longer be allowed to sell animals, and the owner is facing a $500,000 civil penalty after reaching an agreement with the state attorney general.

Just Puppies retail pet stores in Rockville and Towson, along with the stores’ owner, Mitchell Thomson, were charged in June with violating two state laws – the No More Puppy-Mills Act and the Consumer Protection Act — in their practice of selling puppies.

“The settlement prevents Just Puppies from selling dogs in Maryland, provides restitution to Maryland consumers who purchased puppies that had a congenital disorder or hereditary condition or illness at the time of purchase, and imposes civil penalties,” according to a statement Friday from the office of Attorney General Brian Frosh.

The No More Puppy-Mills Act bans the sale of dogs and cats by retail pet stores, in an effort to curb the sourcing of animals from irresponsible breeders.

Owners encouraged to protect their pets from dog thieves

Dog thieves are known to wait in public areas for the opportunity to steal nearby dogs, steal dogs left outside shops and inside cars, and even sn**ch dogs while they are being walked. According to Paws.org, thieves may steal animals and wait for a sizeable reward to be posted, sell the pet to puppy mills or to research institutions for testing, or use them as “bait dogs” which are used to train fighting dogs among other options.

The organizations warn that although purebred dogs are often dog targets, every dog and breed has a value whether it’s resale, ransom, breeding, or baiting. For this reason, it’s critical that all pet owners understand how to protect their pets.

To avoid their pets from being a victim to thieves, they are advised to never leave their dog alone outside, even on their own property. Owners should also supervise when young children or an elderly person is walking their dog so make sure they don’t become a target.

Pet owners are also advised to get their pets microchipped so that if thieves attempt to resell or take the dog to a vet, the veterinarian will be able to identify the true owners of the animal. If their dog is stolen, owners should immediately report the theft to the police, call their microchip company, and do what they can to notify the community of what happened.

Why can't house cats roar? 😻

House cats may lord over the living room, but one significant difference (other than their size) sets them apart from their king-of-the-jungle kin: their vocalizations. Most big cats, such as lions and tigers, can roar loudly to announce their presence and defend their territory, but house cats are stuck with their less-ferocious meows and purrs.

So, why can't house cats roar? Goodness knows it would help them get their way around the house (even more so than they do already).

It has to do with the physiology of the cat's voice box and throat, which help create these feline vocalizations. Because of the way purrs and roars are made, these sounds are mutually exclusive in cats — any given cat species can either roar or purr, but not both, said John Wible, curator of mammals at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh.

Hero Firefighter Adopts 'Miracle' Tabby Cat After Rescuing Her From Tragic Shelter Fire

When the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando caught fire Sept. 15, all hope seemed lost for the animals trapped inside, especially the cats who were housed in the wing where the fire blazed hardest. But one cat in particular was luckily barely injured—and was even luckier to be adopted by a firefighter who helped save her.

Brett Maneri, one of the Orange County firefighters on the scene, arrived to detect and put out potential hotspots inside the shelter once the fire was mostly extinguished. But his work soon became a rescue mission when firefighters realized there were still animals alive inside.

"All the cats were petrified; it was like they saw a ghost," Maneri tells Daily Paws. "When something like this happens to a place where you would rescue an animal, you know, it was heartbreaking."
