It seems folks in Cincinnati were concerned about my boys beauty marks. Wait til they see his feet 🤣 He’s fine, I promise, he’s just got lots of character.
Many of you have asked about Tucker's pink spots. We’ve done some digging, and it seems that he was likely born with a few (not all) of these markings. As he matured, more spots (which we will term “life marks”) have appeared along the way. It is not completely unusual for hippos and other animals to experience changes in skin pigmentation over the course of their lives. For example, even we humans show changes in our skin as we get older with age spots and freckles changing over time. We will carefully monitor and document Tucker (and his spots) over the course of his life in our care. We have no reason to believe his pink spots cause him discomfort or are contagious. We think he is quite the handsome guy with those perfectly pink spots, and intend to care for him with the same high standard of care we set for all of the animals who live at Cincinnati Zoo.
