Border collie not good enough for IGP?
Jasper heard that, said hold my beer, and took 10th place at the Swiss IGP3 Nationals last weekend (A95, B92, C83 - Total 270)💥💥💥💥

I'm mega proud of him! I dreamed of seeing more border collies in IGP, but to see my own puppy with a result like that is pure happiness🍀🍀🧡

Jasper is handled, trained and loved by Annika Matanovic 👑

🤎Wade made his debut in Obedience 1 class today🤩
I’m so proud of my boy❤️‍🔥 He did a great job in the horrible hot weather.
Many thanks to Annika and the Swiss Obedience Cup 2024 team for the great organization and atmosphere, to Hanspeter Jutzi for judging and congratulations to this year’s Higpoint champions!
Today we got 1. place with excellent, 296p... and we also met the family🥰

This one thing very often creates a completely different picture of the dog/line.
There is a huge difference between writing “HD A” or “unknown” in the list. Just try it now with the last dog you looked at.🤓

✅Become a part of the research! 🆓 We're looking for samples of border collies, which are officially screened for OCD - both affected and healthy.

Since I have started new efforts in genetic research for Border Collies and some other breeds, I’ve received some recurring feedback. VOTE for your favorite objection.

Becoming a part of genetic research has been very important to me, as it gives me a direct opportunity to make a bigger impact on the breed. I was super excited, and as it later turned out, somewhat naive, in believing that others would also be enthusiastic about these new efforts in genetic work within our breed.

I have created an online questionnaire that allows researchers to gather more data needed for research, instead of relying on just a single piece of paper as was done before. I am pushing forward projects on Border Collies focused on important traits (and some colors🤪). However, I have discovered that there is very little awareness about genetic research in general, and I often find myself explaining that:
- Without research, no new genes/tests will be discovered, and we will continue doing what we do now, which is not making things better.
- Without someone working specifically on Border Collies, there will be no one working on border collies.

If anyone has questions about the research and does not want to speak with me directly, contact information for the main person at the institute can be found on the institute’s website😎

Please VOTE for your favorite objection:
👍 – Is it necessary to fill in all the questions? (It is not.)
😮 – Why can’t it be done with a cheek swab?
😢 – Why won’t you cover the postage costs?
😡 – I don’t want to go to the vet for a blood sample.
❤️ – I’m worried that Jana is doing the research alone somewhere in the woods.
🤗 – I’m concerned that data and information are not confidential.
😀 – Why isn’t it possible to build the questionnaire on the institute’s website?

Also, as part of my new efforts, I tried to take a mutual selfie with my dogs... they have quite a clear opinion about my attempts😅

This is the question which is asked very often. When to stop breeding of certain line and move to another one, which is clean?

The problem is that it doesn’t help. There is no clear line.

There are traits typical of certain breeds. Some are good, some are not really good. But they are in the breed and can’t be completely avoided based on pedigree alone.

Pedigrees are very useful, but as humans we are not able to remember all the pedigree relationships in all the dogs of your breed. Even if they are people who are quite close 😈😀.

That’s what computer calculations are for. And these complex calculations can estimate the genetic values for each dog, so then you know which two dogs are better to combine. And you don’t have to spend your free nights on databases 🤓.

Breeders, this is how you can help your breed🍀
This is Reesheja L litter - they are all part of the research now 😍

I didn’t know it myself before - how important it is to participate. Now I know and I’m trying to help.
It turns out that the biggest problem is actually getting blood samples. So even though we have nice public databases, we still can’t find anything and improve our breed because of the lack of blood samples 😳.
As a breeder, you have the ability to get samples from the entire litter - and that is very valuable information for research. Information can be later on updated, but the sample is already in the biobank, which makes everything much easier 💪

So if you are a breeder, consider this way how to make the breed better❤️

Participation in research is anonymous (unless you choose to share that you are participating) and the detailed information provided is confidential.

Reesheja border collies

I have been lucky of being encouraged, educated, supported and most of all inspired by so many wonderful people. These people were willing to share information that could only be aquired by the life experiences they have had, and for that I'm forever grateful. I consider every day a learning experience. It is always an honor to have the chance to experience the birth of a litter of puppies that have been so carefully planned for. All of the lessons that the dogs have taught me...and continue to teach me every day... is what makes me feel fulfilled.

I met my first border collie twelve years ago and since this time I needed to have one. Now I have four wonderful border collies and I am enjoing working, living and spending my time with them.

I was lucky enought to have a wonderful family and friends around me, so I had the opportutiny to study and get s lot of knowledge not just thanks to experienced breeders and handlers, but also thankst to science - from scientific papers and also from practical experiences. Now I am working four years as a Researcher at Center of Biomedical Research where I have the opportunity to see how important is the right preanalysis and analysis of samples and also how little is enough to influence metabolism. Because I have been always passionate about genetics I have continued my studies at Department of Genetics and Breeding and wrote my Thesis about computations in kvantitative genetics, genetics and genomics evaluation of animals. I am very grateful that I could get those expert knowledge. Without my loved ones I would not be able to make it.
