I've had really good success with things I've gotten from Northwest Meadowscapes. I have some Western Yarrow I grew from seed I got from them that comes up beautifully year after year. I'm going to be getting some things from their Eco-Lawn list to over-seed my lawn this year.

Lawn doesn't have to be mono-crop, it doesn't have to be high maintenance, it doesn't have to be anything. I've already replaced much of what was there when we bought the home with species of clover and fescue by just spreading seed (over-seeding) each fall and spring. It's beautiful, green, vibrant, doesn't require watering, and only infrequent mowing. We enjoy it and so does our dog.

I love to farm black soldier fly larvae for my chickens, but that’s really only something I can do seasonally. Since I farm them outside, they go dormant this time of year. But I still like to give my girls that nutrition. Plus, it makes them happy.

My chickens won’t eat eggs that are not broken. I’ve heard many people say that feeding chickens eggs teaches them to eat their own. But I’ve not found that to be true.

We have smoky skies here today, and the smell of smoke is strong in the air. There’s ash on cars, plants, and the patio furniture. It’s supposed to be 102° here today.

Have a lot of eggs?

You may have heard of water glassing as a way to preserve your eggs. Water glassing is a good method.

But I love pickled eggs! And bonus: pickling eggs is a good way to use up leftover pickle brine once you've eaten all your pickles. Using leftover brine from pickled beets gives eggs a pretty pinkish-purplish hue.

Or you can make your pickle brine fresh with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.

Pickled eggs are a nice quick, easy snack or breakfast food. Great for a cool day or busy morning. They also make excellent deviled egg and egg salad.

I like to preserve peppers by making pepper sauce. It’s easy and doesn’t require any equipment. And bonus, you get a really great-tasting vinegar out of the process.
