Things don't always go as plan with young, green horses... Yesterdays our plan was showing but we had to shift goals a bit and we ended up doing groundwork, lunging and riding in the arena.
Justin had a really hard time focusing on me when there was horses turned out all around the warm up arena. Overall Justin is really easy to get along with but he has quite the baby stubborn streak and can be difficult to get and maintain his focus when he thinks other things are more important. We are going to consult with our great behavioral, natUral horsemanship trainer this week and get some new ideas on over coming this issue.
Onward and upward.

Today we went to Irish Rose for Justins very first show!!! We had a phenomenal day. It was a super fun & positive experience for the baby Biebz. We got off the trailer like a pro and enjoyed grazing. Had a little 5 minute tantrum initially in warm up but then went around great the remainder of the day. Justin has a great tempermant but does occasionally have a baby tantrum to see if he can convince us to do something besides ride 😬
One of my favorite characteristics of this horse is that he doesn't hang on to things, if he gets flustered or has a baby moment her gets over it and moves on!
He looked absolutely stunning and we even got a comment from the judge how he was "beautifully groomed" which may have been my favorite part. I always take great pride in my horses presentation, because that is one thing I am in control of 🤣
We got a 61 in Intro B mostly due to his lack of steady contact. And unfortunately in Intro A I didn't have enough outside aids when the next horse came near the arena door and Justin tried to step out lol (clip below), I was a little bummed they DQd us and didn't finish scoring the test because I didn't think he actually got his whole body out what whatever, he carried on and completed the rest of the test nicely!
Thanks to the whole Irish Rose staff it was beautiful and everyone was so friendly. We can't wait to come back again!! Also thank you to our transport and emotional support human Ty, all our barn family and all our friends 💙 We are so lucky to have you all!

Gearing up for Justins first show ever and first show of the season. Justin has been putting in really good work and I feel great going into our first show!!
We will be at Irish Rose this coming Saturday and then we head to Cobblestone Equestrian Center next Saturday. Both shows we will do USDF Intro A and Intro B to keep it low pressure and fun for Justin's first few shows!
Our only goals this weekend are ...
1. Have a positive, fun experience for Justin
And...
2. Get a good photo😂

We had an incredible day and took a field trip to Fiddlesticks Field. Justin was an absolute ROCKSTAR and didn't take a single wrong step all day. I absolutely adore this horse... He has an incredible mind and personality, and he's so handsome to boot.
My favorite part of this was that it was 3 OTTBs from my farm conquering the world. The chestnut is Justenuffkick, and the other bay is Mr. Cub. I love taking these guys out and showing the world what OTTBs can do!
The video of me on the ground working threw the curtain show his calm, silly personality. I don't usually use treats to train, but for Justin it's what works best in some situations 🥰
Thanks to Kate (and Henry) for video and cheering, to Makenzie and Katie for being the best travel buddies, and to Meredith for opening her amazing facility to us!!
I'm feeling super confident for our first show, which is exactly 13 days and counting 😬

Happy 4th birthday sweet boy!!
We celebrated by taking a field trip to our friend Lisa's for a birthday ride!! So grateful for awesome horse friends to help us gain all the positive life experience a 4 year old needs 🥰

Justin had a rough week last week. He developed some very sensitive swelling on the side of his face. While looking for a cause we found a very sharp splinter of a tooth jammed between 2 molars. Dr. Faragasso from Genesee Valley Equine Clinic, PLLC was able to remove it, and while she was in there she power floated some sharp edges....
The splinter didn't make sense for the swelling, but obviously needed to come out. Yesterday he had a recheck where we came up with a new idea... Perhaps a sting or spider bite... And with Benadryl on board he was feeling fine and got to go for a ride!
Justin hasn't been ridden in a week and I hoped right on and had an amazing ride, he is just so dang cool for such a young fellow 🥰 we appreciate all our vets, body workers, farrier and friends who keep us chugging along!

I have been slacking at posting due to my new job... but Justin has been doing great and loving the outdoor arena!!
I had to share the last video as a silly moment, Justin loves doing fun things and if you start a ride doing things like obstacles or splashing in puddles.... he will try to drag you to do those things over and over 😂 he has such a fun soul, we can't help but laugh

We finally took our first field trip and I am head over heels for this guy. He was an absolute DREAM, he had zero spooks, zero shenanigans and was even chill enough to take a roll! We also cantered for the first time. I'm pretty much in tears how happy I am, anyone who knows the struggles I've had the last couple years with my big horse, knows how much this meant to me.
He loved the big longsides, and even did their bridge at the end! SO FREAKING PUMPED!!!

Kate and I shared a ride today, doing this as a team is so much fun. It's nice having someone just as obsessed with this little horse so we can gush over him together 🥰 it's hard to believe he isn't even 4 yet with his easy going demeanor.
I hoped on first to give Kate a play by play of how I'm riding him and preventing him from stopping in the corner by his stall sincw he likes to trick her into stopping there 😂. Video one is his into to leg yield and he is acknowledging the idea wich is all we can ask for!!
During Kate's ride he offered some great stretches while still staying balanced. We finally found a bit hes enjoying too! It was a great day 😊

Today I hopped on Justin to give Kate a play by play of how I ride him, then she hopped on! I'm having a lot of fun doing this as a team, because I have someone else just as obsessed with him as I am and we can gush over him together 🥰
It's really hard to believe this horse isn't even 4 yet. He's just so easy going. We have just been asking him to move forward, be relaxed, and keep a rhythmic trot. Video 4 I'm just beginning to ask him for the starts of leg yield. He's offering us so much more every ride and really starting to enjoy it.
If I haven't said it before.... IM SO FREAKING EXCITED ABOUT THIS HORSE

At this point in their training all I expect from Justin is for him to be moving forward, him to be relaxed, and for him to keep some rhythm in his gaits. Check, check and check.
I really can't believe this horse is not even 4 yet. He is an absolute GEM! We also finally found a good bit for him (the HS KK Ultra was the winner). He's stretching nicely, but maintaining his rythem and balance. I let my horses stretch nose to dirt if they'd like as long as they don't fall to the forehand. Justin stays pretty well balanced on his own, he's got a great compact build so that's definitely on his side.

I won't lie, I've been holding my breath waiting to find the big problem with this horse... the last 2 I've brought home off the track went threw a trailer issue phases. One wouldnt load, and one would explode when you closed him in. When Justin came home he was sedated so I really didn't know what we had.
The last few months I spent a lot of time working on our small bridge in the arena to get him thinking about where his feet are, in a tight space. The last few days he's been really connected and engaged with me so I thought it'd be a good time to try the trailer. Perfect boy. Now we can plan our first field trips!!!
Ty, my boyfriend, has been witness to the problematic horses and knows how frusterating it can be. He watched Justin and joked "too bad you can't breed him, he walks nice and gets on the trailer" 😂 so it's safe to say he officially got the "horse husband" seal of approval today.

Something with Justin and I has just clicked lately. We are really enjoying each other's company and he's offering me a lot more during our training sessions both in saddle and on the the ground. Under saddle all we have asked for is forward so far, because he used to get stuck... but now he is enjoying his work and moving right along 🥰 he's still working on his modeling skills tho, I don't think he realizes that when you're that handsome you have to have your picture taken all the time 😉

You're all going to be sick of me telling you how awesome this horse is.... but you'll just have to deal with it. How many 3 year olds can be out of work for 10 days and trot around like this... no lunge, nothing... just the greatest brain on this guy 🥰

Learning more groundwork excersizes is always a lot of fun for me. This was just a simple desensitizing excersize and Justin was very concerned about the rope around his hind end...
This could translate to a big problem if he had a branch caught touching his leg on a trail ride, or he got caught in a fence. I didn't realize how much it translated to keeping us safe in a lot of situations.
Here's where we started, and ended. Thankful for Steve and all the tools he gives us 🥰

Justin did his first "obstacles" under saddle 🥰🥰 he needed to inspect and see if they were edible first tho 😂 Kate had the honors of piloting him tonight! We are both super excited about Justin, you can not help but smile when you're with him.
