I have finally named all the budgies. I’ve opted for traditional, mostly native Australian names…here’s the meanings for the names: Matilda (mighty battle maid)
Bindi (little girl/butterfly)
Medika (flower)
Walken (rainbow)
Yileen (dream)
Tau (twilight/dusk)
Mirri (the sun)
Talei (precious one)

The budgie boys are playing on the wine rack and Mirri is sampling today’s vegetable menu….Mikey prefers sticking to an all seed diet! 😅

This one is still doing so well. Just over a week now and eating us out of house and home! He/she is super lively! We play him YouTube aviary sounds videos to combat any potential loneliness.

Had a great morning at the sale in Taunton this morning and came home with 4 new beauties…a pair of Hagaromo or Helicopter budgies and a pair of lovely cresteds…all had their drop of Ivermectin and have joined the flock. I love the size difference between the tiny helicopters and my exhibition boys…😍

So this little one (roulroul partridge) was born during Friday night/Saturday morning. Only one this time so was very worried about it’s chances but it’s defied everything and here it is super strong and alert, sooooo pretty and eating very well! 😍

The love affair between Matilda and her female friend is only intensifying…lovely to see Matilda come out of her shell. She now confidently manages to go inside and out all by herself. I had to help her to begin with as she just kept sitting in on her own. 💕

Talking about following…Mikey is following Missy around with ‘love wings’ (aka heart wings) everywhere (unless I point a camera at him!)….the boy has fallen hard for her charm! 💘

Budgies all ventured out for the first time yesterday….Matilda has made a new friend, in one of the pied hens, who followed her everywhere.

So I got home eventually last night (after an emergency landing due to a bird hitting the plane!). Couldn’t wait to check on the javas this morning. I could only find 5, found one dead in the box (which obviously got squashed in the end, poor thing!) and one completely missing! But they’re all lovely looking birds in an interesting mix of colours!

Why I hate rings so much…my dad hadn’t noticed that on 2 of his roulroul boys the ring was stuck halfway up the leg. I did notice as I always keep an extra close eye on birds with rings (after I once bought a canary that nearly lost its leg due to dirt under the ring). It was a tricky job, roulrouls don’t like being handled, and took some equipment (toothbrush and toothpick) but pleased we managed to clear them.

Only bird keepers will know how this stuff is like gold dust in the UK. It has been probably 2 years since it’s been completely unavailable in the UK, some say due to Covid (ivermectin was trialled to treat Covid) and others said due to Brexit. I may be able to sell a little to a few people as it’s a pretty big bottle for my few birbs!

Some more pics from my dad’s aviaries…1st pic is one of his mixed aviaries and has bourkes, turks, masked finches, green singers, munias, zebra doves, heck’s, silver bills, diamond firetails, star finches and lots and lots of gouldians (and probably lots more I’ve missed!). Then he has one with hookbills: cockatiels, kakarikis and budgies and then another mixed one with lots of Java sparrows, zebra finches, canaries and diamond doves etc and here’s also some of his 14 Roulrouls….

Nosey beggars!….cleaned out the indoor part of the aviary on Sunday and put in a ‘scratch tray’ for indoors (they have one outside, which they love!). I wanted to take a pic of them playing in it but Flo is straight at the door to see if any treats are coming her way!

I had a rusty cage front and some offcuts of ply wood left. Spent an afternoon tidying the cage front up and made a cage….pretty pleased with the result…think this will be handy for sale birds…😃….might make a hospital cage next! 🔨

Looks like a 2nd clutch of Javas may be on the horizon soon. There’s been a good deal of nest building going on but no eggs yet. My other pair with the 7 chicks is in the box further back, near the indoor area.

I’ve been away for the weekend and came back to these little gems having been born. It should be 7 white Java Sparrow babies….even as chicks they look so sturdy!
